Post news/rumors etc. about each and let me know which one you'll be picking up and why. I can't decide.

I'm with Guitar Hero III, mostly because I don't have access to cable internet and I don't want to spend a shitload on instruments in Rock Band. Besides, Rock Band still seems kind of iffy to me.

How much is Rock Band?
It's gonna be 160 for the 360/ps3 versions and 120 for ps2 if i'm not mistaken.
I've already preordered guitar hero because it seems like with Rock Band it would only be fun if you had friends over... Guitar Hero would be something I can have fun with alone or when people are over.
Now that there's a thread for both, can someone post the tracklistings to both games here so all can compare?

Are you kidding? Think about it. With GHIII, you get the guitar and game for $100. For $60 dollars more you get a microphone and a drum set. Not to mention, technically, two more games; a single player singing campaign, and a single player drumming, on top of the guitar campaign.

I'm getting GHIII first, because it comes out first. I need my fix, but I feel like I'll end up spending more time with RB in the long run, due to multiple roles, DLC, and the "prospect" of user created content (<-- can someone validate this?).

Let's not forget bass campaign.
Still, I think most Guitar Hero fans won't care for a singing campaign and the bass campaign will be worthless if the songs picked have shitty bass riffs. Since I won't sing and won't play through the bass or singing campaign, it's not worth the $160, especially when I can just buy GHIII as a stand alone for $50-60 bucks.
I still want to try out the drums, though.

yeah I can't cite it but there's definitly no bass campaign
if you look at a press release it should say it
and we got a guitar hero/rock band club at school so I think ill get rock band and play it with those guys and then just try out guitar hero 3 whenever a friend has it

Single player drumming sounds incredibly boring to me, and if I get Rock Band, I won't be singing at all (Even in multiplayer).
The only thing that appeals to me more from RB than GH3 is the Strat. That thing looks so much better than any of the other GH instruments

Wonder why they wouldn't do that. Sure, bass campaign would be easy, but then they could say that there are four different instruments to play and four (I'm guessing here) difficult settings to try to get more people to buy it.

Eh, I see too different purposes for myself.
GHIII is more solo-oriented for me. I don't care what anyone says, I think the new competitive play for GHII looks terrible. Every demo looks like you spend more time using and dealing with those different disabling things than actually playing the song.
Rock Band is much more of a multipayer game if you ask me. I'll be playing that with buddies a lot.

I'm going to get Guitar Hero III for sure, simply because I love the game and couldn't stand for it to be out and for me to not have it.
I'm still deciding on Rock Band though. I'm pretty sure I'll just get the game by itself, because I don't really care about playing with 3 others (I'd think the screen would be a little crowded) and I really want to play Who's Next. They're making the entire album downloadable shortly after the game comes out. And stuff like Tom Sawyer, Say It Ain't So, Creep, etc.
Edit: Shit though, I forgot the Rock Band guitar is gonna own the GH3 one. Those 5 extra buttons and the whole look of it is just way better. Now I don't even know.

My friends dad works for Zildjian and they're supplying the sticks for the drums... he coordinated the order with the makers of Rock Band so he gets the full set for free... but my friend has neither a PS3 or a 360... and he knows I have one...

guitar hero is probably going to be better for now. I really like the track listing wayyyyyyyyyyy better. The thing is, I'm a drummer so I really want Rock Band to be good. I know it will be awesome to play through a few times, but it could suffer from "Cant You Hear Me Knocking" syndrome. I hated that song in Guitar Hero 2 and, despite my love for guitar hero, got 5 stars on the song on expert and have NEVER played the song again because it's just not good. It's ok. I'll get both, but I'm getting more nervous as I see the full track listings.

Is there a track listing for Rock Band yet? I don't think I would want to buy because I would never sing any of the songs. And I am a drummer so if I feel like playing along with any of the songs I can easily just go up to my room and put on some headphones and play along on a real drum set.

WELL, in my opinon, since thats all it is, i prefer guitar hero wayyy more than rock band. rock band has a wayyy easy guitar and the drums have no corelation with the songs. guitar hero, when and if it somes out with a drum attachment, will be much better. i also feel that GH4 will be one of the best games yet.

Problem is, Rock Band has MTV's backing and thus inherently more backing from studios and bands. Guitar has always seemed to have shite when it comes to DLC. Plus, I go for fun factor, not difficulty...which lends itself to liking rock band more. I mean, I don't want it to be hard, otherwise I would just go learn real guitar.

I'm having this same problem...
Rock Band 2 has gotten much better reviews but I don't like the guitar controller nearly as much as GH. Plus I like the setlist for GH:WT more. I haven't played the GH drums yet but I like the look of them better but I have read things about them not working so I don't know if they have fixed that problem yet or not. Overall I am leaning towards GH and I might just pick up RB2 by itself.
Here's Dammit on both games. I like RB2's note chart more, but GHWT's drums look a lot better to me.

You can say ratings be damned, but 6% is a lot. Having played both, Rock Band 2 is vastly superior in every way. From the way the drums feel and the gameplay on screen..to the career mode and character animations, Harmonix has it down. Not to mention downloadable content WEEKLY and the fact that the Guitar Hero people directly ripped off the Rock Band 1 formula. I hate to see people support that shit.
I think the perfect compromise here is getting the GHWT set with all the instruments because GH instruments have always been better and then getting Rock Band 2 standalone game.

Not with the drums. They feel like Fisher-Price toys and have had ever more problems than the first Rock Band's instruments had. I, myself, prefer the RB guitar, especially with the lower frets for the solos (shit fucking rules) and there is absolutely no clicking sound when you strum.
eh the rock band drums had problems to. the pedal on the guitar hero set is a bit cheap but other then that i think it's better.....but i've yet to play with a set that wasn't working properly.

That's like hating on Quake for ripping off Doom. Get over it man, shit happens.
I'd go with RB2 because it's both a casual game (I heard there's a no-fail mode, which sounds great if you're drunk) and hard game (Fuck expert drums. Actually fuck hard drums). GHWT on the other hand, you fail as a band if one of the members fails once, and from what I've seen the notes are weird and forced like GH3.

I'm more of a Guitar Hero guy, but I played Rock Band 2 in a Best Buy setup and I have to admit it was fun. There are certain things I don't like and the guitar is one of them. The strum bar feels too weak to me. What I do like is that if one person is failing, the whole band isn't unlike GH:WT where everyone fails if one does. However, I prefer the challenge in GH. I find Rock Band to be too easy, which is cool for a casual game, like when friends come over who don't play much but want to have fun. I think you're best bet, which has been mentioned before, get GH:WT full band and then buy the standalone game of Rock Band 2.

I don't see why they couldn't if they wanted to...it's not like it is some secret formula. GH would be incredibly dumb to not try to.

It's totally possible, but I just don't see Neversoft being that dedicated.

Buy Rock Band. You can use the drums and guitar on Guitar Hero but not vice versa. That way you can buy Guitar Hero cheap six months down the line.
oooo.
interestingggg.
rockband, 3 letters for you...DLC!!!

Guitar Hero World Tour sucked. Rock Band 2 by far.
Definitely get Rock Band, the overall game play is wayyyy better, and there is more Downloadable Content every week. guitar hero is pretty weak.

The GH: WT drums and guitar work on Rock Band for me...I also know the RB guitar works on GH for me...
However, that being said I think RB >>>>>>>>>>GH:WT.
Yeah there are a few cool songs on GH that arent on RB, but the song library is HUGE for RB and I feel like the game play is MUCH better.

Your song selection with Rock Band is a bit more diverse, and the songs on Rock Band seem to have a bit more replay value to them; consequently, I'm not sure what makes the Rock Band song list more fun to play multiple times.

I prefer Rock Band, I just to find it easier to play in general.
And I find it funny that all Rock Band and Guitar Hero do is copy each other now.

Holy bump! Lulz
I think this will put Rock Band in the lead if it isn't already.

Guitar Hero for just plain guitar
Rock Band for full band, or drums and singing.

Rock Band. Has so many good/fun songs available as DLC, it's basically impossible for me to get bored of it. Well, at least until I run out of money.
Guitar Hero World Tour ruined the Guitar Hero franchise for me, as well as the band spin-offs. They're milking the franchise for all it's worth now.

Something just didn't feel right about that game. It didn't feel like a Guitar Hero game.

I didn't like a lot of things about it. First off the fact that it's a GUITAR Hero game with drums and vocals. It should have stuck with what it did best, I really enjoyed Guitar Hero 3. Secondly, because of the instrument additions, the quality of songs in terms of playability really suffered on guitar. There are only about 10 songs on the disc that I play regularly, and the most fun song in the game in my opinion is "Anything", which is free DLC.
So, basically, everything Guitar Hero does, Rock Band does better from my point of view.

This. That was the thing I liked about Guitar Hero only doing guitar. Whenever I wanted to play hard guitar songs, I'd turn to Guitar Hero. Whenever I wanted a fun, overall band experience, I'd turn to Rock Band. Now GH is just like a crappier version of RB, although I do like the GH drums a lot better.

Rock Band made me realize how much I hated Guitar Hero's interface.
