this will be the best series of them all. i'm rooting like crazy for the rockies, but i won't be too upset to see the phils make it to the nlcs.
i love the nl playoffs this year, it played out exactly like i wanted it to.

And I won't even lie, Colorado's offense is the only offense that can slug with the Phils, and their defense is phenomenal. Should be a great series that comes down to bullpens, time for Tom Gordon to prove his worth in pressure games.

I cannot wait for this. I'm not a big baseball fan outside of Philly, but I've been watching them consistently every night for the past month and a half.
I'm going with my Phils.

I'm such a jerk...I watch the whole game last night, wanted the Rockies the whole time. As the game goes on, I shift more and more to being ready for the Padres. SD hits the homer in the 13th, gets a guy on base, Hoffman's up...I roll over and go to sleep. So I wake up this morning, already confident against SD, and find out, of course, the Rockies won as soon as I went to sleep in dramatic fashion. Now I'm slightly worried.
That said, we need Cole to come out and lock down game one, save the BP and get us up one. If Kendrick can get us to Coors up 2, I'm very confident we'll take care of it. I almost wish I didn't have my team in this series, because it's matched up to be very entertaining.

i don't know, this rockies team is scrappy and they're not done until the final out is recorded. we all saw what happened last night.
the phillies have it, but i really think the starting pitching outside of hamels has been a fluke. i HIGHLY doubt that mainly lohse and kendrick could continue what they're doing. a 3 man rotation of hamels, kendrick and moyer wouldnt be a bad idea, going off of what the cubbies are doing. then again, do you push cole to his limit or do you save the young arm? it's gonna be one hell of a series.

10/02/07, 08:35 AM
when all is said and done, i say the Phils win in 4. they'll lose game 3 in similar fashion to last night and then put hamels back out for game 4 and that's that.
aloneatlastnj
10/02/07, 08:46 AM
i also say have the 3 man rotation set up like so:
first round: hamels, kendrick, moyer (i'd rather him out on the road, veteran savvy and all that nonsense), back to hamels for 4.
phils eliminate the rockies which brings us to round 2: hamels, kendrick, lohse while we stick moyer in the bullpen as a long reliever/emergency help.
I LOVE Philly, but fuck after last night, I so want the Rockies to go far. But go Phils. hopefully in 5.

I don't care who wins this. I really like both teams, they're real fun to watch. Both came out of nowhere to make the playoffs. Whoever wins this series I want in the World Series.

My seats are in 410, nose bleeds but I only had to pay what the Phillies charge, $40. I went Friday and Sunday against the Nats, so I've been bringing good luck lately. When they won on Friday, it was like a mass exodus to McFaddens and they had the Mets game on every screen. After the final out, it was like a mosh pit in that place, people hugging strangers and beers flying, it was outrageous.

That is awesome, I really wish I got tickets from Stubhub or something for the Sunday game... Yea we have tickets up top but right behind home plate, they are pretty good and are considered "premium seating" since we are partial season ticket holders, although I may disagree that they are "premium." I can't wait to see how this place is rockin' Thursday.

I think this will be the best series of these playoffs. Two teams with lots of momentum coming into the playoffs.
I've picked Colorado to win it, but it'll take them five games. I think Colorado really needs to win game one against Hamels, if they lose I think they could just fall apart altogether. I know people think that the Phillies pitching is awful and what will be their downfall in this series, but honestly the Rockies pitching isn't much better. They have Francis, who matches up well with Hamels and Jimenez who matches up alright with Kendrick, but then both teams have no one else.

I would say that the Rockies losing to Hamels isn't exactly the downfall of the series, since he is a stud, striking out 13 his last outing and the Rockies have never faced him. If this series goes 5, I see the home team winning every game.
Francis doesn't match up well with Hamels, the Phillies rocked him twice this year, he made it 3 and a third innings last time. And Jamie Moyer and Kyle Lohse are clearly not the second comings of Cy Young, but both have had success in the post season.

Winner of this series decides MVP between Rollins and Holliday.
i don't think so. the mvp is based on the regular season, and since both teams got in because of these guys' clutch performance, i think they should both be considered.
however, i think it goes to holliday and it's not even close(edit: ok, the 3bs and runs scored make it a little closer). the guy hit .340 with 36 homers and 139 rbis, a .405 obp, 50 doubles, 8 triples, 11 sb's, 216 hits, and 120 runs scored. rollins hit .296 with 30 hrs, .344 obp, 38 2bs, 20 3bs, 212 hits, and 139 runs scored.
the 'plays in colorado' argument is a wash because philly is basically the new colorado ballpark for hitters.

I say its a flip of the coin, Jroll has gold glove defense and plays on the east coast, so that gives him an advantage. As far as announcing they were the team to beat and backing it up, all depends on if the writer voting is old school and would appreciate that or not. I say its impressive but shouldn't hold weight in this debate. I will say Holliday will scare the hell out of me every time he comes to the plate this series.
The ballpark argument is a wash in general since Jrolls numbers are better on the road.

Philly leads the majors in comeback wins this season. Something like 48 of their 89 wins are come from behind wins.
Lohse pitched well against the Rockies early in September. Nothing leads me to think that Kendrick will not continue to pitch well and he is great for this series because he gets a lot of ground balls with his sinker.
I would rather Moyer pitch Saturday then Lohse and I think it could change if we were to go down 0-2.

the inquirer said it would be moyer...it makes more sense, moyer would take a really long time to get warm in the pen, whereas lohse has done long relief before and could get ready quicker/is better mentally prepared to be thrown in.
that is the one good thing about our rotation, they're so used to shitting pitching, guys like lohse and durbin are pretty solid in long relief. once we get to the 7th, if we've got the lead all we have to do is pray tom gordon doesn't blow the game in the 8th and we're usually good because romero and myers have been really great lately.

Philly is a park for home runs and that is it.
According to ESPN's park factor, Philly is the 14th rated hitter's park. Colorado is 3rd. Wrigley and Fenway ahead of them.
It's not as far off as people think that Rollins could win it. Holliday only hit .301 had 11 hrs and 55 rbis on the road. In contrast, Rollins hit 12 hrs and had 47 rbis on the road. and hit .290...out of the lead-off spot.

the more i think about it, the more i think this game is more 'must win' for the phils...
most people are giving them the edge because of their pitching, and namely cole hamels. if the rockies get to him and take game one, on the road, flip home field, and effectively knock cole out until game 4 or 5, they've got a huge edge. also, mentally, the longer the rockies streak goes, the more dangerous they're going to get. and let's be fair, if the phillies shit the bed today, that city is going to be really let down come game two. the place is in a fenzy right now, and if the rockies take the wind out of the sails from day one, they'll be down a notch for sure in game two.

Matt Holliday cannot hit fastballs apparently. He gets like an F for putting fastballs in play as he is well below the league average.

Hey Philly fans,
do any of you guys listen to sport talk 950 or whatever it is. Yesterday they were talking with the guy that makes Ryan Howard's bat and he actually makes Garret Atkins too and Adrian Gonzalez uses Ryan Howard's model.
Anyway, a lot of the Phillies went toward this company and had them creating bats for themselves. Most notably, Pat Burrell changed his bat around the all-star break. Is it a story, who knows, but in a first half where his walks were up and his k's were down and he was just making bad contact, it almost makes sense.

http://www.lookoutlanding.com/images/admin/col.gif
Why you should want them to win: Easily the best story that baseball's had in years. This Rockies team feels almost identical to the '95 Mariners, and I think that alone is enough to make us want to hop on for the ride. No real "unlikeable" players.
Why you should want them to lose: Gimmicky ballparks are bad for the league. The Rockies also had the best run differential in the NL, which doesn't exactly make them real underdogs, but that isn't so much a good reason to root against them as it is filler, since I couldn't come up with anything else.
http://www.lookoutlanding.com/images/admin/phi.gif
Why you should want them to win: Jamie Moyer. Jamie Moyer. A thousand times Jamie Moyer. Also would serve as proof that you don't need pitching, defense, and fundamentals to win in the playoffs as long as you can bludgeon your opponent to death.
Why you should want them to lose: Brett Myers. Brett Myers. A thousand times Brett Myers. And Greg Dobbs shouldn't win one World Series ring until Justin Leone has three.

That's a tight slider -- major late break

Great pitch, not a strike, but obviously he worked the corner and got the call.

I'm not going to blame the umps, but those were two pretty piss poor strike calls. You would think Howard would get the calls more than manny fucking corpas.

Yeah Corpas is really stretching the zone and exploiting it. He's doing exactly what she should be doing, this has been a great inning for him.
