i think the cubs have the edge in depth and w/ the guy in the dugout, which i think becomes even more valuable in October.

Cubs in 4.

I'm pretty fired up for this series and I like the Cubs chances. Z needs to come up big tomorrow night but I at least want to see a split in Arizona and I'll be happy.

LF Alfonso Soriano

Why you should want them to win: Jamie Moyer. Jamie Moyer. A thousand times Jamie Moyer. Also would serve as proof that you don't need pitching, defense, and fundamentals to win in the playoffs as long as you can bludgeon your opponent to death.
Why you should want them to lose: Brett Myers. Brett Myers. A thousand times Brett Myers. And Greg Dobbs shouldn't win one World Series ring until Justin Leone has three.
http://www.lookoutlanding.com/images/admin/chc.gif
Why you should want them to win: A lot of people still love Lou Piniella, and would like to see him win after having so much frustration in Seattle. Team hasn't won since 1908, making Red Sox Nation look like a bunch of impatient little sissies. Fan base should be rewarded for consistently filling up the ballpark, even when the team totally sucks.
Why you should want them to lose: The world does not need Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano to be rammed down its throat, nor does it need Chicago's fan base to become the new Boston. Championship robs countless man-to-man conversations of "I'm in a longer dry spell than the Cubs" punchline. Futility = hilarious. Fans should be encouraged to get jobs rather than sit around Wrigley drunk off their asses all day.

(I can't be bothered to upload the new logo. Shut up.)
Why you should want them to win: Nice big middle finger to the Pythagorean spirit that so thoroughly destroyed our season. Also a big middle finger to the belief that you need experienced veteran leadership come October. Bob Melvin is a better manager than we ever gave him credit for. Brandon Webb is like a more awesome version of Cleveland's Carmona.
Why you should want them to lose: Why should a bad run differential catch up with us and not the biggest offenders? Pathetic fan support. Still angry about Conor Jackson. Don't need people to start treating Eric Byrnes like some kind of superstar. Seeing a .500-caliber team win the Series crushes any illusions people might have about the playoffs proving who really is the best team in baseball.

Yeah, in their defense though, the same site I saw that stat on, it said the Mets, if they collapsed, would be the 2nd greatest fall.
1. 1995 California Angels
Peak Playoff Probability: 99.988% after games of August 20th
Odds of Collapse at Peak: 8,332-to-1 against
Record at Peak: 66-41 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=1995-08-20), 9.5 games ahead of the Rangers (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/team_audit.php?team=TEX) and 12.5 Games ahead of the Mariners in the AL West; 12.0 games ahead of the Yankees for the Wild Card
Record after Peak: 12-26
I posed this in the form of a trivia question to our internal mailing list: Which team had the worst playoff chase collapse of all-time? I got one guess for the 1964 Phillies, one for the 1978 Red Sox, one for the 1962 Dodgers (who rank 17th), and three for the 1951 Dodgers. Only Rany suggested the 1995 Angels, and that is because he has the best memory of anyone in our group (Christina Kahrl (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/index.php?author=35) being a close second) and recalled Clay’s original article.
But in fact the answer isn’t even close. The 1951 Dodgers' odds were 384-to-1 against missing the playoffs, while the Angels were more than 8000-to-1 against. In fact, even if you ignore the Wild Card possibility, and looked only at the divisional race, this would still rank as the worst collapse of all time. With 38 games left to play, the Angels a combined 24.5 games ahead of the Mariners and Yankees, the two teams that would eventually pass them in making the playoffs. It took a perfect storm of events to knock the Halos out of the race—two distinct losing streaks of nine games apiece, plus the Yankees and Mariners each winning two-thirds of their games—and even then they still had the chance to redeem themselves in a one-game playoff against the Mariners. It's interesting to also note that if the Mariners had blown that playoff game, because the Angels played so badly that the M’s opened up a three-game lead at one point, the '95 Mariners would rank 13th on this list.

Good pitcher's dual tonight as expected. Lou pulled Z too early though. 85 pitches through 6, he was cruising and could have easily pitched one more. Sucks losing game one but if we can win tomorrow you can't complain about being tied 1-1 going back to Chicago. Lose tomorrow though and it's over.

Embarrassing tonight. No chance we come back in the final two innings. I give the D-Backs credit, when the put guys on base they plate them. Cubs had opportunities tonight and they didn't get the clutch hits. Hopefully we can win game three to at least make this series competitive.

To answer your first question, I'm still wondering myself. But, what I've learned from these first two games is they do all the little things right (taking the extra base, moving the guy over, clutch hitting with two outs). Their bullpen is real good. And, of course Webb is one of the best pitchers in the game, while the rest of the starters are solid. Still, they don't have a starter hitting over .300 and nobody outside of Byrnes really scares you in the line-up - but they find ways to manufacture runs.

Your team fucking sucks, they only reason your in the playoffs is because of the embarrassing division your in. You were only 8 games over .500, thats nothing to brag about. There are almost 5 other teams in the NL that had better winning percentages then the cubs. Cubs fans will do anything to kiss the teams ass and not face the facts. Most people were calling on the Cubs the beat the D-backs but I saw how the Cubs played against them in the regular season and the Cubs record at D-backs place is atrocious so Im not suprised.

The cubs on the verge of being swept is proving my point that they are in the playoffs where they don't belong.

Where they dont belong? Hahahaha, they won their division, they earned their shot and they stunk. You HAVE to be a sox fan, haha.

They don't belong there, there are plenty of teams that deserve that spot more then the cubs, they just so happen to be LUCKY enough to be in the shittiest division in the league.

it was nothing new to me, typical cub player fasion, it ranks behind their own players fighting each other in the dugout and Lee throwing a punch, missing and running away.

Everyone said the same thing about the cardinals last year.. but when the cardinals won, people STILL went on to say that they didnt belong there or didnt deserve it.

I went to about 7 cubs games this year, you wouldn't believe how many people leave the game after the beerflow stops in the 7th.i would also like to point out that you have the least amount of wins for a playoff team.

First off, I'm a realistic fan and anyone that's been on this forum all season would know that. So, I don't expect them to win the World Series this year or even get there. I'm happy to see them in the postseason after last year's disaster. However, I would argue your point that they don't deserve to be in the playoffs and your comments about only 8 games over .500. They had a horrible start the season and were one of, if not, the best team in the NL after June 1. It took awhile for Lou to get used to his players and tinker with the line-up.

hahaha your one of the oblivious douches saying "This is the year" arent you ?

I'm assuming you're a White Sox fan which I don't know why I'm wasting my time even responding to your posts.

I thought it was hilarious when Lilly did that. At the same time I was surprised because Lilly is usually stoic and doesn't show much emotion, so when he did that I was kind happy to see it.

85 wins. The most wins in the NL were 90.

So yes we did have the least amount of wins but the difference between the top team and the lowest team in the playoffs is only 5 wins over a 162 game season. Not much of a difference.

Let's face it, the whole NL as a whole was weak not just the Central.
