Maroon 5/The Hives/Sara Bareilles
Friday October 5, 2007
The Q - Quicken Loans Arena
Cleveland, OH
Sara Bareilles opened the show. I had never heard of her before and we missed her set. The show started at 8:00 and we walked in the arena around 8:15 and she was already done. I guess she's some pop singer and we didn't miss much from what I was told.
The Hives were the direct support. They had a lot of energy and put on a pretty good show. A basketball arena isn't really fitting from them IMO but they did a good job of working up the crowd. Well, half of it anyways because it seemed like some people didn't know how to react to them. The vocals were turned up so high, it was piercing and at times it was louder than the music itself. They played for about a half-hour. But overall, I enjoyed their set. I'd like to see them headline in a club someday.

The opening for Maroon 5 couldn't have been any better. They played the end of the Cleveland Indians/New York Yankees game on the two big screens on the side of the stage, which got people riled up when something good would happen or they'd cut back to the Verzion Wireless advertisements. Then trains Haffner (of the Cleveland Indians) got a game winning base hit with bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th and The Q erupted and the screen and house lights when down and Maroon 5 came out just as the game was over at 9:35. Perfect timing and a great way for them to come out. Now, I have wanted to see Maroon 5 live for a very long time now but was always skeptical that they'd be awful but they weren't. Adam Levins voice sounds solid live and makes me apperciaite it on record more as well. There were parts of the show was the syth/keyboards sounded way off and out of tune but I'd say that was their only down fall of the night. The back drop with the large M logo-light and all the lights were neat. Secret segued in to a brief interpretation of Phil Collins In The Air Tonight then segued in to one of my favorite songs on Songs About Jane's Shiver which segued in to the band jamming out to end it with The White Stripes Icky Thump, which was really cool. during one song near the end of the set (which one it was I can't remember) Adam walked in the middle of the arena and stood on a chair in the audience and sang the song which of course caused an uproar and people running to get as close as possible to him as they could. They played 14 songs which of course included all the hits and I was happy with the mix from the two albums. The encore consisted of three songs and the band/crowd singing Happy Birthday to the guitarist, which led to the singer smashing a cake on his face and them chasing each other the stage. They closed the show She Will Be Loved which I think lacked the energy to be a good closing song. When all was said and done they were on stage for about 80 minutes. I enjoyed the show and thought it was a good time but had I spent $60 on it I don't know how I'd feel about it but we got in for free so it's all gravy. And not to mention we actually had pretty good seats. Lower level, section 108, row 4. And not to my surprise there was only around 6,000 people their.
