i dont know about you, maybe its just me being pessimistic but what are the chances that an opening band is going to blow you away or really peak your interest? i havent found many that have.
have you ever gone to a show not knowing who the openers were and after they played you went over the merch table and picked up a record?
what were those bands?
mine:
Park
Northstar
Drumkan
& as of recent due to the He Is legend tour
Paulson.
what are your bands?

i saw valencia with boys like girls last november. they actually played after them, but i had no idea who they were or that they were even playing. they're pretty much my favorite band ever now and i don't know how i ever lived without them. in fact, that's how i found out about most of my favorite bands.

they were a sad replacement for northstar. not only did they drop off the tour right before coming to my town, but they went and broke up immediately after. i never did get to see northstar live.

lots of bands I've seen as openers have gotten big since then. I saw Brand New open for Dashboard (christ, before DC was even big at all). Brand New are one of my faves now.
saw Minus the Bear open for Straylight Run. And two or three years later, they're one of my favorite band, if not my favorite.
I also saw the following as openers and really liked them:
Classic Case
Mutemath
I Am The Avalanche
this is hell
DESA
the honorary title
and alot more

i saw Steriogram open for Phantom Planet a long time ago. i didn't buy their CD at the concert, but picked it up a few weeks later. they're still not well-known, but they're pretty interesting. or maybe i just liked them because the other band who opened sucked so hard.

I saw The Dresden Dolls open for Panic! At the Disco and bought Yes, Virginia... immediately.
It was love at first listen. *dramatic sigh*
Slayer13

Manchester Orchestra.
I saw them open for Anathallo. It was so awesome! They just kept playing the same generic bull-shit, and played so fucking long that Anathallo couldn't finish their set due to the Sunday noise ordinance!!!
In conclusion, Don't let MO open for anyone, because they've yet to learn what it means to OPEN for a band. Fuck, they're terrible.

I saw Manchester Orchestra open for Brand New and got really into them. I never like opening bands.
This seems to be a venue/promoter problem rather than a band problem. I'm sure they didn't overplay the time alotted for them (unless they weren't given one) and if it was going to be a problem they could've been cut short.
or just don't go to shows in cities with shitty ordinances like that.

I went to see Autopilot Off opening a show once, and discovered Don't Look Down, Over It, and Yellowcard (who were headlining but I hadn't really heard yet).
The Dear & Departed opening for Eighteen Visions
Dropping Daylight opening for Unwritten Law
Saosin opening for Avenged Sevenfold (back in the A.Green days)
Finch and Something Corporate opening for New Found Glory
Bayside opening for Mest
Fall Out Boy opening for Mest
Acceptance opening for Saosin
Anberlin opening for Sugarcult
There are more, but I'm drawing a blank. And this is random, but Maroon 5 opening for Duran Duran like four years ago.

I've seen plenty of decent support bands that I hadn't heard before the show.
Parkway Drive supporting Shai Hulud,
Artreyu supporting Boy Sets Fire
No Trigger supporting Set Your Goals
Carpathian supporting Parkway Drive
Thunbs Down supporting Boy Sets Fire (I think)
Indecision supporting Sick Of It All
Trail By Fire supporting As Friends Rust
but if a local band is fairly decent I'll usually try and pick up their demo as well.

Well during the Across the Great Divide tour in perth the opening band Expatriate had a very unique sound, they recreated the effects very well. And their bassist and drummer were very good
