Which concept album, in your opinion, is the best of the past 15 or so years?

In Keeping Secret of Silent Earth: 3
Because it's the only "concept" album I can think of, really, besides the rest of Coheed's discog, but it's my favorite.

My favorite concept albums of the past 15 years have been..
Rock
Volta - De Loused in the Comatorium
Rap
Prince Paul - Prince Among Thieves
RnB
Lyfe Jennings - Lyfe 268-192
Lyfe Jennings CD is a story about his life, so I consider it a concept album, but some people might not.

quite a neat idea for a thread really. the first thing to come to my mind was:
the slackers - close my eyes
the idea was to create a modern ska record that had the same sound & vibes of those classic ska records from the early 60's (under-produced & raw/organic, much like those of the legendary studio one). "using a very layered approach, the way a painting is created. the band drew from a wide palate of sound - percussion, rhythm, horns, vocals, even a lively mc, adding layers of harmony to fill the canvass." combining ska & rocksteady with soul & blues. the album is so pure sounding, it jumps out of the speakers at you & while at times being very dub inspired, i also pick up a strong 'rat-pack/sinatra' vibe to it, which i love
anyway, i'd love to see what other people come up with in here

can i say all 3 coheed albums? based on the complex story alone.
thats a concept album?
i had no idea
It's almost like a half-assed, drunken concept album. There is a lot of circus imagery. The cover carries meaning, as well. As I said, it's a concept album - it's just tough to understand what the concept is in the first place.
Who really cares? One of my favorite records ever.

My mind is blank right now. Only one concept album that comes to mind.
The Early November - The Mother, The Mechanic, The Path
Although I don't think they pulled it off.
The Mother is one of my top 5 cds of all time. Brilliant.
The Mechanic is just so so rock (I don't think they should've included this disk).
The Path is a pretty out there idea. I didn't like the deep, creep voice - although it didn't bug me too much. What annoyed me most is that every new song was awesome and different sounding to the last one, but they just about always weren't whole songs. Like a verse and another bit and then they would stop the song for talking. That annoyed me. I would've rathered a lot more music to the talking. Cause those songs sounded gold.

if it's supposed to be a concept album, then they did a terrible job, i really don't find a concept to be good if it's all about death

i agree. i am obsessed with concept albums. i think this should just be made into a general discussion of concept albums. what you like about them. why you feel they are so good. just kinda explain why you love the album.

no, a band can do a concept about whatever they want
death just seems like a subject armor for sleep shoud stay away from. If it's going to be an album about death, then the album should sound like death.

i agree they could have done much better, but what does death sound like. thier idea of death is more of a limbo, which they did decently. i feel that given the subject, many can only envision a "ender" sound for the subject, and that makes it difficult to enjoy WTDWYD. just my opinion.

its not about death itself, but the story of a boy who kills himself and his journeys in the "afterlife"- how he confronts his feelings after death, his discovery that life beyond death is pointless and that he lost everything by killing himself.

Easy killer.
First off it was a joke, knucklehead. Second I was fully aware of it being a concept album just if you read earlier in the post people were discussing the legitamacy of some so I figured I'd ask.
No hard feelings I hope. I still love you. Non homo.

And I still stand by Coheed, since that's the only "concept" I seem to listen too.

i really do not know very many of them. but musically i think Boys Night Out - Trainwreck is realllly good. very diverse list of progressive songs, incredibly creative lead guitar parts, really awesome drumming. although the grotesque story is a bit scene-esque, its pretty well written lyrically.
