Every year there are several films released that seem like they were more or less made to win Oscars. Big cast, loud performances, etc. Of the ones i've seen previews for or heard about, what are you most interested in? Personally, of these, the only one I think will even be good is Reservation Road.

These type of films never appeal to me. I won't be seeing any of these.

Rendition, as it is the only one out of those that I have seen a trailer. Looks good anyway though.

I haven't heard of any of them...

Thanks TJ. I was wondering a lot lately what might be in the runnings this year and couldn't come up with much because I know most of them don't come out until the very end of the year. But what would you say has a chance of all the movies that have already been released?

I'm more or less in the same boat.

umm...movies that i think will likely be nominated for something?
once (best picture, best song, best original screenplay, director)
away from her (best actor - gordon pinsent, best actress - julie christie, best adapted screenplay, director)
the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford (best actor - casey affleck, cinematography)
ratatouille (best animated, best original screenplay, best...picture?)
sicko (best documentary)
waitress (best original screenplay)
knocked up (best original screenplay, best supporting actress - leslie mann (i can wish :) ))
not saying i think all of these nominations are deserved, but these are ones i think are definitely possible.

Really? I have to say Reservation Road seems like it could be GREAT, reminded me sort of something like In The Bedroom or Little Children, two films I LOVE.

I just IMDB'd Reservation Road and it looks extremely powerful, especially with Pheonix. I must see it.
Reservation Road seems like the most interesting of the bunch.
I don't think Once is going to get Oscar recognition, hopefully though.
Into the Wild should be nominated for Best Cinematography.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some movies from earlier in the year but Once and Into the Wild are the best films I've seen this year.
I still need to see Assassination of Jesse James.
Some movies coming out still that I think have potential to be deserving of Oscars (not necessarily going to be recognized): No Country for Old Men (Best Picture/Best Actor/Best Adapted Screenplay), Lars and the Real Girl (Best Actor). Darjeeling Limited should be good too.

Reservation Road. I read the book and loved it. Another film that is also getting a lot of buzz is Atonement. I read the book as well, it was excellent. The movie looks great too.

I just got done reading Reservation Road, and I thought it was very very great. I can't wait to see the movie.
I wish they'd play The Assassination of Jesse James here, but they aren't and I can't find out if they're going to play it in the near future. I really want to see this film.

just from watching trailers my bets are on American Gangster , Into The Wild , 3:10 To Yuma , and The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.

i think its kind of a love it or hate it kind of thing. i LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it (casey affleck is incredible, but sadly will probably only get a supporting actor nomination because TECHNICALLY brad pitt is the lead (though affleck absolutely CONTROLS this movie)). though i think if he gets a supporting nomination he will have a much better chance of winning, being a young actor.
and i hear the last ten minutes of atonement are stunning.
Atonement will very likely get a best picture nomination... and likely win i'd guess.
Lust, Caution for foreign film i'm sure (it'd be eligable, right?)
Tommy Lee Jones might get nominated for best actor between No Country and Valley of Elah

I've heard from a ton of places that Casey Affleck is amazing, and I've also heard Pitt is pretty damn good as Jesse James. Kinda cool that Ben helped set up Casey's acting career and now Casey is blowing him away.
The biggest negatives I've heard about this movie are that it's too long and they could have done a better job of editing out some scenes. I don't think that's going to bother me too much, because from everything I've heard about the great acting and the great cinematography makes me think I'm going to love it.

Goddamn I want to see this. I can't believe it's not playing anywhere near me, not even the hipster indie theater I go to. Maybe it had it at an earlier time and I just dropped the ball and missed it.

Atonement was brilliant; it needs to be nominated for Best Picture ATLEAST, and James McAvoy for Actor, who is becoming the best British actor in my opinion. ;]

actually, imo, pitt is ok at best. a lot of the supporting actors (paul schneider, garret dillahunt especially) act circles around him here.

Well, I have a feeling Affleck may be getting another Oscar nomination this year (best Director) for Gone Baby Gone.

How many early reviews have you seen on this?
As soon as I heard Ben was directing this, I've been really interested in seeing how it was reviewed. He has a ton of talent, but just picks the wrong movies to act. He's a really talented writer.

lol, too bad it wont make the film submission deadline.
Daniel Day-Lewis will probably be brilliant in There Will Be Blood and get nominated. Not sure about the movie in general although I'm certainly anticipating it.

there's no probably. you couldn't pay Daniel Day-Lewis to give a bad performance. he's literally incapable.
*This will be updated as I see more movies*
I'm predicting that between No Country For Old Men and In The Valley of Elah Tommy Lee Jones has a clinched Best Actor nomination. Javier Bardem (No Country), John Cusack (Grace Is Gone), Viggo Mortenson (Eastern Promises), Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Tom Hanks (Charlie Wilson's War)
Best Actress- Cate Blanchett (The Savages), Laura Linney (The Savages)
Best Cinematographer- Roger Deakins (No Country, Jesse James)
Best Director- The Coens (No Country), Mike Nichols (Charlie Wilson's War), Paul Haggis (Elah), David Cronenberg (Eastern Promises)

how was Charlie Wilson's? i've seen the trailer and it really doesn't look like a winner. I also didnt know Paul Haggis directed. I need to see that film then.
I'm putting a lot of strain on Charlie Wilson because its two of my favorite artists (Hanks ans Nichols) in one, I haven't actually seen it yet.
Elah, go see. easily one of the year's best so far.

I don't think the Savages will be nominated for anything, everything i've heard about that is extremely negative.

I was having a rough time thinking of a second one, honestyl, but I thought it looked good
I forgot The Diving Bell and The Butterfly and Away From Her, both are going to be huge, critically and award wise.

Sadly, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly can't get best Foreign, because for some crazy-ass reason France didn't choose it as their submission for the Oscars.
TJ Wells
11/01/07, 08:19 PM
And I personally think Gordon Pinsent deserves a nomination more than Julie Christie. I really do. I thought he was better than her in that movie. And thats saying a lot. Not that she wasn't great as well.
That's a downer.
Away From Her is going to dominate
TJ Wells
11/01/07, 08:22 PM
These are what I think are virtual locks for nominations:
Casey Affleck - Best Supporting Actor - The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Sarah Polley - Best Adapted Screenplay - Away From Her
Denzel Washington - Best Actor - American Gangster
Daniel-Day Lewis - Best Actor - There Will Be Blood
Best Animated Feature - Ratatouille
And my wildcard?
Judd Apatow - Best Original Screenplay - Knocked Up

Why the heck isn't There Will Be Blood on this poll!?!?!
I'd definitely give a cert to No Country for best adapted screenplay, but those aren't bad, and I agree with Casey Affleck too, forgot that one
My wildcard is
BEST PICTURE- The Darjeeling Limited.
It deserves the nod, but it won't happen.

Doubtful, but that was a great film
Hats off to both Affleck's

Things We Lost in the Fire would be my pick of this litter. No Country for Old Men is probably going to win Best Picture, though. I'd like to see Ben Foster win Best Supporter actor for 310.
