back in the early 90's skinnerbox frontman jeff baker (aka "king django") had a mission, to put together a ska 'supergroup' made up of musicians within the incredibly talented & abundant new york ska culture. he knew what sound he wanted to make & began looking for musicians who had that wonderful familiarity & ability to play traditional jamaican ska. django found the sound he was looking for - ska in a very traditional jamaican style, that also reconnected with the roots of american rhythm & blues
borrowing members from bands like the slackers (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=186066&highlight=The+Slackers+%28Official+ Thread%29), the skatalites (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=254154), the radiation kings, the toasters (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=189174&highlight=The+Toasters+%28Official+ Thread%29), skinner box, the insteps, agent 99, dub is a weapon, rancid, the mighty mighty bosstones, etc, the band has so far managed to put out 3 (often overlooked) classics of modern ska. albums that fuse ska, reggae, rock-steady, r&b & even dub into such an independent sound. every member plays their instrument so well, but stand outs would have to be dave hillyard (the slackers) & roland alphonso (the skatalites) both on saxophone. django's smooth vocals that wail so wonderfully over the sweet rhythms & vic ruggiero (the slackers & someone i think is one of the most incredible musicians/singers/songwriters in modern music, genre regardless) on keys/organ. on the surface this music seems rather simple, but after a couple listens you can really hear the complexity
since there's no streaming tunes that i could find, i've upped a couple tunes from their second album, 97's back with a new batch, which tends to focus more so on rhythm. the youtube below is a tune from 95's album open season, which focuses more on well written horn lines. enjoy guys
