File sharing

We've all heard about the big and bad record companies suing innocent twelve year old girls for hundreds of thousands of dollars simply because they wanted to listen to some Britney.

Well, frankly, I'm fucking sick of it, so I'm going to explain to you dumbfucks who do not understand the situation what the pros and cons of file sharing are, and what you should really think about what's going on at the moment.

PROS FOR THE BANDS - Yellowcard has stated multiple times that it probably wouldn't exist if not for the internet. I know that I first found out about YC by downloading a couple of songs off Kazaa, enjoying what I heard, and then buying the CD. (And yes, that was before "Ocean Avenue," you rabid Inquisition-type bastards.)

File sharing with programs like Kazaa, IRC, or (insert program name here) allow bands to spread the word across the country (and indeed the world) without having to press thousands of CDs or tour around the country. It allows obsessive fans to spread the word without having to get mommy to drive them downtown to hand out fliers and stickers.

PROS FOR THE FANS - You can sample a band without having to shell out $15 only to find out that the CD blows nuts. It's pretty much that simple. If you're a dick, you can download the entire CD and listen to it without shelling out any money, which leads me to my next point.

CONS FOR THE BANDS - There are dicks out there who will download your entire CD off of IRC two months before it comes out, listen to it obsessively for a few weeks, and then forget it ever existed. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU ARE A BAD HUMAN BEING. Allow me to emphasize that - IF YOU DO THIS, YOU ARE SHIT-CHEWING, ASS-FACED SCUM.

What, you did it because you really wanted the band's CD and think it's cool to get CDs before all your friends do? First of all, it's fucked up that you get off by withholding music from your friends because it makes you feel good. Secondly, all that you are doing is showing your disrespect for the band. They created that music and you're essentially stealing their creative property. You are refusing to support them and encourage them to make MORE good music by paying a measly $15 (for many relatively unknown bands it can get way the hell lower than that). If you want to see a band you love fold, this is the fastest way to do it.

CONS FOR THE FANS - There weren't any. People will speak of the years leading up to 2003 with reverance. It was a time when you could swap music like Jenna Jameson swaps fluids and never fear any kind of repercussions.

But now (and fucking finally, I say) the "media giants" have begun to sweep down upon and slay those who share three thousand albums with other people online. And don't you dare tell me that you bought every single one of those CDs, because that makes you a goddamn liar, and God hates liars. So, cons for the fans - you can go to jail, asshole. Yes, even if you're a twelve year old girl.

THE LOWDOWN - I believe that, in moderation, file sharing is an extremely good thing. It allows bands to promote themselves easily and it allows fans to sample music before they shell out cash for some overproduced excrement that belongs in the toilet next to the deuce I dropped a couple hours ago.

However, when you start to download albums without ever buying the band's CD to show your support of bands you like, the system breaks down. You're not allowing the bands to continue to exist and create more good music.

So go ahead, download "North" and "Punk Goes Acoustic." I did. But you can bet your ass I'm going to buy both of them.

Yea, in moderation its good. But I find people on opposite sides of the spectrum. Once that dont download AT ALL (even for a new band) and those that download and never buy.

Me, I download lots of cds, but end up buying shitload. Sure, there are a few that I'll burn and never buy (finch, the used), but most i burn then buy (get up kids, afi). I really use it as a tool to get into bands, to really decide if I should invest my money into them.

Plus, you all know how avid of a fan I am of album artwork.

and what if someone DID indeed buy all of those albums. i know from personal experience .. my brother owned well over 1 thousand albums .. he had 5+ of the biggest case logic books filled .. so don't say it isn't possible.

and who's to say we don't support artists in other ways? i don't buy CDs... although i can because this weekend at best buy a bunch are only 7 bucks so i picked them up .. but aside from that .. i've got well over 10000 mp3s on my computer .. 3/4 of which are full albums .. 5 of which maybe i own. but for the bands i really like. i go to their shows. i buy t-shirts. and i spread the word of how good they are and other peopel go out and buy their shirts / cds / tickets for shows etc.

yea i agree with you about a lot of stuff but theres no need to go crazy bout it. i dont like when people download whole cds and stuff but im not them. i buy most of my stuff, but i do copy some cd's from my friends. so i guess god hates me and im going to hell

I agree. From everything I've ever heard, bands make a lot more money directly off t-shirts and tickets. Obviously selling CDs is a big part of future record deals and shit...but still, I support bands a lot more by buying their shirts and going to see them than I do buying their CDs.

What pisses ME off is that pretty much every single band I like, I learned that I liked them because of downloading their songs. Now I'm fucked because I can't just go to the store and decide to buy a CD because there's a cool picture on the cover.

Besides, I'm the kind of person who takes pride in his CD collection. So whenever I have extra money, I'm always buying CDs because I think it's awesome to have my CD rack lined with the pretty spines that represent all the bands I love. I'm not a problem downloader.
