native american books

has anyone read anything native american related that was good?

im really interested in native american culture and would love to read books about it....but i'd rather it be a novel type book

I read House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday. It was a pulitzer prize winner but I thought it was the most dull book ever. Then again this was 4 years ago and I didn't really read it.

I went to a reading by Sherwin Butsui at my school a couple of weeks ago. Definitely not a novelist, but a Navajo poet, so it relates. His stuff is very surreal and based heavily on imagery, but those aspects of it really relate to the culture. He was a pretty chill dude, interesting speaker. Shapeshift is a collection of some of his stuff if you wanna check it out. Might not be the best place to start though... just make sure to read some literature that is actually by a native american.

I don't care for it that much but most people really like Sherman Alexies stuff. Mainly The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, or The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian.

+1 on Sherman Alexei. He's always reading his stuff on Selected Shorts and most are excellent.
