I just finished reading the book and loved it, and now I see this.

I'm not sure that this will be good, as much as I like Will Smith. He doesn't seem like the right person for the character, and I don't really like the liberties they took with that basic story line given, seemingly to maybe make it more understandable to a general audience and to focus a little less on the dwelling into the psyche.

this is the one about the dude whos basically alone in a world of vampires right?

will smith is playing the lead?

oof.

yea, basically he is the lone survivor of a vampire plague and the book looks at his life dealing with it.

amazing book

but you simply can't purely adapt this book into a movie, since the book doesnt even have dialogue until about 2/3 the way through...it's all about his nostalgia and thoughts

As much as I love Will Smith when he's acting, I have a feeling I'm going to really dislike this film due to the storyline changes they are making. I'll stick with The Omega Man (also based on I Am Legend).

It's been adapted as two great films.

Both are based on the book, and follow some major plot points that were in the book.

It already seems pretty clear it's not going to follow it very well. It seems like the dog is with him all the time from the trailers (obviously could be different but that's what it makes it look like) and I already don't like how the vampires are being portrayed. Not human-like at all which is not in correspondence with the book.

The book is a definitely a favorite of mine, but I think in order to enjoy this movie, you have to throw that knowledge away. Its a fact that this movie is going to be nothing like the book, but that doesn't automatically make it a bad movie. I'm a sucker for vampire films (Dracula 3000 notwithstanding) and will gladly pay to be entertained. That's all it is: Entertainment. Enjoy!

I'm sure it'll be a fun action film (and a billion times better than the turd-fest that was Tranformers), but I'll find it difficult to get past the fact that it's an adaptation of an absolutely incredible book. I could be proved wrong, but from the trailers it's looking like it's not going to be particularly faithful. What's funny is that a bunch of closet racists on the imdb forums and elsewhere are whining about the fact that the main character incidentally described as white in the book is being portrayed by a black man. This has no bearing on the story at all, and really should be the least of I am Legend fans' worries.
Apparently the film was originally set to be made in the 90s with Ridley Scott directing and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role - I'm undecided as to whether that would have been great or absolutely horrible.

The Robert Neville's nemesis was supposed to be played by Johnny Depp too, but I don't remember why that fell through. Will Smith and Johnny Depp would be an interesting combination on screen.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't, but it's good to hope. I'm hoping that even though they have made changes to the characters, the same motifs will be kept so people will understand why it is titled "I Am Legend."

I'm kind of shocked it's taken this long to be made into a movie actually... there aren't really that many action scenes in the book and it could have been done with a fairly low budget if it was faithful.

They tried. Frankly I'm glad they didn't

"A Ridley Scott adaptation was scheduled for production in the late 1990s, but fell through due to an inflating budget. The film was to star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Then director Rob Bowman took a crack at a smaller budget version with a rewrite from John Logan. Will Smith will now star in the film directed byFrancis Lawrence(Constantine). Filming took place in New York City, and the film is scheduled to be released on December 14, 2007."

I'm excited to see this. The trailers make it look great anyway. I never read to book though. But now all the comments about the book I think I'm going to have to pick it up.

Have to remember too, to enjoy the movie you cant sit there and watch it and sneer at your friend saying "OH THATS NOT HOW IT HAPPENS IN THE BOOK PFFT"
I had a friend that did that with Lord of the Rings. Try to watch it in the theatre with him "OH They left out X from the book, this is missing so much. Oh they changed that!"
Haha...it could have ruined the movie for me if i wasn't so into the film.
Some things in writing don't work when translated to the big screen. The writers have to decide what they can tell in a film to push the story along but still have the subject matter. Like some of the things in the LOTR novels you could take like 5 pages and spend 40minutes trying to get all of that information on a screen.
Hopefully whoever wrote I am Legend will take what you all enjoyed from the book and be able to make an entertaining movie.

No. Anyone who hasn't read this book already should definitely wait until AFTER they see the movie to pick it up. Otherwise, they'll just be comparing and contrasting the whole movie. With a book, it's different. Right off the bat, there's a different feel, tone, and POV than the movie, so both will be much more enjoyable.

Thats true. I haven't read the book and don't plan to until after the movie.

What I noticed in the replies to this, is that the people who have read the book have criticized the trailer about not being true to the book (from what they can see), whereas the opinions of people who haven't read it (ie. me) is in direct contrast to whats being said. I found it amazing.

It appears that they changed that in the movie which is really going to bug me, because him finding that dog is SOOOOOO huge for him in the book. I know I already mentioned I don't like how the vampires look a while ago but the reason why is that I think it means they will mess up/leave up the part with his ex-coworker, now vampire. It had the same main character name (Robert Neville) and a similar theme (Vampire-like creatures due to a dangerous virus) but these are really the only two things that the movie has in common with the book. If you want to know more, read this next paragraph that has some spoilers.

I gave this movie a 4 out of 10 for a number of reasons. First, the "creatures" in I Am Legend look absolutely horrible. There is really shitty CGI work all throughout the movie. The creatures don't look scary at all, nor do they look even a little bit real. They can not speak like they do in the book, nor do they even resemble human beings at all. The design flat out sucks.

There is also a lot of CGI animals that roam around New York throughout the movie, and I must say they look pretty horrible and fake too.

The story to this movie is fairly similar to the book. A virus breaks out wiping out nearly everyone in the world, except Robert Neville, who is immune. Robert does his daily chores just like the book, and closes up at night to avoid confrontation with the infected. He also battles his own mind, just like the book, and struggles with loneliness through out the movie.

These things I liked, along with the way they depicted the vacant New York City. Most of this comprises the first 1/2 of the movie, which wasn't that bad at all.

But here is where it all goes to shit.

big spoilers too by the way...

The second half of the movie is all one lame CGI creature battle with Neville. After his dog is killed by the creatures, Neville goes crazy and tries to take down as many vampires as he can as a suicide mission. He is rescued from the creatures by a woman, and her son, who take him back to his house. At this point, I was thinking okay here is a similarity with the book, but there was really no similarity at all.

It turns out the woman and her child are both immune to the virus too, and there is a whole colony of living people in Vermont. Gay. gay. gay. gay. gay.

I'm about to give away the ending.

Vampires eventually break into Neville's house, they give him a stir, and he locks himself and the woman into his secure lab in the basement. During this scene, Neville finds a cure to the disease and hands it to the woman. She and the child escape through a passage, while Neville kills himself with a grenade, taking out every creature in the basement. The movie ends with the woman and the child reaching the colony in Vermont, where they give the people the cure, and the world is saved. Happy ending.

What the fuck.

Just got back from the Midnight showing. Very good movie. I'd give it a solid 7.5. The best part was that while it was not faithful to the book (sorry book fans), it still wasn't a mindless action movie. It focused a lot on the isolation and the situation itself. The baddies were secondary, meant to be an ever present faceless evil, making the encounters between them and Smith even more gratifying.

Oh, and there was a totally kickass trailer of The Dark Knight that literally blew my socks off.

I enjoyed the movie. I'd give it a 7/10. I think some of the CGI was a little lame but I thought the deserted/destroyed New York City looked awesome. The pacing of the film was good and the movie seemed to breeze by and some of the moments were tense/thrilling and some of the action was pretty sweet. But it wasn't all sweet there were a few parts were it kind of failed. Overall it was good predictable time and Will Smith delivered a good performance.

Ok, the ending for this movie really ruined the whole thing for me. What a stupid ending. I don't really feel the need to go in to details for the sake of keeping it unspoiled, but man, after a super strong first half, it just falls apart in the second half.

The ending for the book would have made so much more sense in this movie.

All I have to say is..

when I read the book, I hope the character Will plays doesn't actually go killing the damn infected on a rampage.. the protagonist can't have a suicidal tendency. And what the fuck? The infected have a leader that learns how to trap Neville and happens to seem twice as strong as well as intelligent as the others?

I won't ruin the ending for people that didn't see it but... lets just say I didn't like the way it ended.

Overall I would say it was a REALLY GOOD movie and had me on the edge of my seat the WHOLE time (except the ending of course).

I think a lot of people who read the book came in with a closed mind thinking it would be bad because they heard they changed the ending. I think they did a really good job for the most part. I read the book, and i'm not really a vampire fan and all that garlic/crosses stuff, so the movie was a little better for me in that regard.

MESSAGE TO TAKE FROM THIS: Give it a fair chance and see it with an open mind. You'll be pleasantly suprised.

I just got back from the 11:15pm showing (I was at the theater at 930 hoping to catch the 10pm but that and the 10:40 were sold out).

The movie was SLIGHTLY boring for the first 20 minutes or so, but I was on the edge of my seat the rest of the way.

Like others have said the CG is not very good at all, and I can't help but think of Resident Evil some for the story, but I think this is much cooler. I liked most of the movie and the end.

I think I'd give it about an 8/10 .......but I do usually rate movies pretty high lol

Also, the Cloverfield and Batman previews were pretty sweet. Cloverfield reminds me of War of The Worlds lol

We also got a preview for Prince Caspian, which I know wont be as good as I hope, but looked decent as well.

I read this on the IMDB forum:

"In the film "I am Legend" there is a point where you see a big 'poster' with the Batman emblem, with the Superman logo over it.

This is in the movie because the screen writer of the movie "I am Legend" originally wrote a script for a "Superman/Batman" movie, but it never made it to the big screen. He put the Batman/Superman logo poster in I am Legend as a lil joke to the people that knew he originally had plans for a Superman/Batman movie."

Weird, I thought Will Smith was delightfully restrained in the movie. The sadness he portrayed while doing simple things like eating dinner or going to the video store was pretty damn fantastic work there. I thought he did a great job.

I thought the dog dying was incredibly sad. Will Smith did a great job in my opinion. If I tryed to cry, I probably could have in the scene and the following ones.

but what was up with fred moving? was it one of Neville's own traps? DID THE ZOMBIES SET IT UP?

I also think the should have showed more of him first becoming the last man in New York

I'm seeing this movie tonight at 9pm. I have pretty low standards when it comes to popcorn flicks (I enjoyed Van Helsing, I-Robot, Spider-Man 3, etc) so I imagine I'll like this one too... regardless of all the nay-saying I've read from people.I Am Legend > the popcorn flicks (mostly crap) you mentioned.

Van Helsing and I-Robot were both fun times. Nothing memorable, but certainly wasn't bored any time watching them.

Van Helsing was an abomination. It was one of the worst movie I've ever seen. It was offensive.

I found myself to be very entertained by I, Robot, However.

Yowza, I just saw this movie is on pace to make upwards of $85 million this weekend. Didn't expect that.
Pace shortened, ended up hitting $76.535 million.

I was more shocked to see that Alvin and the Chipmunks hit $45 million. What the hell is that about? Counter programming at its finest I guess.

awwww, gross dude.

That was maybe the loudest, most obnoxious film I've ever seen. I swear to God they had the sound cranked up louder than it ever should be.

Maybe I should rent it again but I hated it when I saw it and I like Jackman a lot.

I'm suprised Alvin did good too. I haven't seen any previews for that on TV... Weird.

The funniest thing for me of the whole movie:

I live in Vermont and went to see the movie, and when Vermont was mentioned, everybody started talking and yelling stuff like "that's us!" and "goooooooo vermont!". I guess they have more Vermont spirit than I do..

I felt this was one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Yea there were a few flaws, i.e. the superhuman powers the darkseekers had, the seemingly rushed ending, but it definitely was a solid, emotional movie.

I just can't believe he was the Fresh Prince. I've seen plenty of movies with him since then but I always refer right back to Fresh Prince when I see him on the big screen.

I just saw it and thought it was alright. Not bad, not great. The CGI wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it still could have been better. Definitely didn't like the ending too much. The best part about it at the IMAX was the 7-minute The Dark Knight clip.

Also, can anybody explain to me how he still had electricity going throughout his entire house?

Lastly, I, Robot was terrible. That might be the only time I didn't like Will Smith in a movie.

Now, i can say that this wont be the best movie this year, but it deffinatly had a sense of drawing you into the story. The way they used Will Smith and Sam (his dog), was deffinatly the best feature the film had. I had heard a few people say they hated the ending and i deffinatly think it was the weakest part of the film but i dont think it deserved some of the things that were said about it. The fact that it was so rushed, is just because you were so drawn into the first part of the movie and when the tempo changed, it was just to rushed. I deffinatly think it could have been better but it was still a good film and i would recommend it.

At the beginning of the movie they showed that the Hudson Tunnel was flooded, so I figured a boat or something. They didn't have a car anything, 'cause it looked like they were back in his car (which also doesn't make sense, 'cause it had just been BLASTED). Spoilered just in case.

so i saw the movie last night and I thought it was incredibly boring, and the fact that the girl knew that there was a human colony because "God told her" was one of the lamest parts of any movie ive ever seen. For those of you without a clue, "I am Legend" is sadly manipulative to make up for serious story flaws. 1. After his leg is injured, Neville can only drag himself to his car while the sun sets yet only at the last minute does he have the strength to stand up. This was unnecessary as he could have just gotten up to begin with and the scene still would have been tense. 2. If it was dark enough for the mutant dogs, it was dark enough for the maindarkseeker..but he did not attack, nor did any others. 3. BIGGEST FLAW EVER..if the City was quarantined..bridges and tunnels blown up etc ( as we were shown) ...and NYC is an island..How did ANA and ETHAN drive to VERMONT FROM THE CITY???????? OR even get into the City in the First place.

Apart from your 3rd point, I would hardly consider those "serious story flaws". Get over yourself. It's just a movie.
