How do you guys feel about it? Is anyone currently signed up to donate any organs/tissue after they die, either for transplant purposes or for medical research?

I recently re-newed my health card and signed up to be an organ donor.

So what do you guys think about it?

i'm with lunchforthesky on this one. barring any major cause of death (something like cancer that destroys organs and tissue) everything gets taken out of me. why give those who haven't lived a chance not to when they're waiting on the donor list?? the only thing my organs will be doing is rotting away.

I personally feel like everyone should be an organ donor (automatically), unless they request not to be. Basically, I think it should be the other way around from what it is now. There is absolutely nothing for anyone to lose (no pun intended), so I don't know why it isn't that way. So many lives would be saved.

With that being said, I have also signed up.

I'm an organ donor.

I don't see how it will make you uncomfortable when you are dead. Organ transplants are incredibly rare, why wouldn't you want to potentially help save somebody's life?

It's hard to explain, but being alive now and knowing about what will happen just makes me somewhat uncomfortable. I didn't really have any time to think about it once I signed up and it was sort of unexpected. It's just hard to express my thoughts about it in words is all.

not that i want to pressure anybody into it or anything - but it was always put to me as when i someday die, donating my organs and tissue will give someone else a chance to live.

I think it's just because I just signed up yesterday and I've been thinking about it a lot in kind of disturbing detail. I know after a while, I'll stop thinking about it and it'll be normal. I also think the whole 'death' thing has a lot to do with it. I know I'll be dead and all, but being a conscious person right now, I can't help but think about it. It's like being afraid of death, you know it won't matter because you'll be dead but sometimes you just can't help but think about it and be scared/disturbed. It's hard to explain.

it must be because i'm not understanding what you're trying to tell me.

Oh, well. I tried. But like I said, I think I just need some time to get used to the idea.

I'm currently an organ doner but I have heard if there is some sort of catastrophe and the EMT's/medical professionals have to do a triage they put the organ donor's at the end of the line because there is always such a demand for organs. Also if there is a car accident with multiple injuries you are at the end of the line which I guess is the same as the triage deal. I have no clue if this is true but I have heard multiple people say this, I think it should be noted I have no problem with my organs being donated once I am dead but I also want the medical professionals to do all they can to save me while I am still alive.

I really encourage everyone to be an organ donor. It can be a bummer to think about because in most cases, organs can only be donated when people are in horrific accidents where they are brain dead, but the rest of their body is healthy, but as people mentioned, you won't need your body after you die, and you can really help save lives.

A kidney transplant probably saved my life :-)

I'm signed up.

When I'm dead, I'm dead so if someone wants my face, eyes, lungs, liver, penis or whatever then they can help themselves.
You are a sick, sick man. On topic, though, I do agree with you. A body is a body, if someone wants to reanimate me into a zombie I'm cool with it, I'm dead.

I'm signed up for it, but like you, I'm a bit apprehensive about it. A lot of it is my parent's view on the whole thing. They are religious and believe in the ashes to ashes thing. And not that I really care what they do with me when I'm dead, but just the thought of someone else walking around with a little part of me freaks me out. But who knows? Maybe we'll get cool body haunting privileges or something.

Just tell your parents that there are currently NO popular world religions that are oficially against organ donation.

They know. And they aren't against it, persay, just wary? I think they are more against me talking about what I want done to my organs than the idea, since they want to be gone long before I kick the bucket.

I've heard stories like this before from people, but nothing to back it up. Its a freaky thought, for sure, but it is as far out there as any conspiracy theory to me. My dad worked as an EMT and my mom is a nurse at a hospital... they're organ donors. They don't seem particularly paranoid. If everyone was an organ donor this wouldn't be an issue.

As far as religion, besides say... rastifarian I can't even think of an example where this is a problem in any major religion. Is the physical body important in death? doesn't seem like it from what I understand.

It's weird thinking about dying, but I'm pretty sure I don't need my organs anymore. I think its a pretty cool thought that even in death you can give someone else new life. How selfish can someone be that they rather decompose than possibly save a life.

I will not donate my organs. I completely respect other who wants to, yet I would feel like my body will never have rest and peace.

Yeah. I mean, it may freak me out a little bit, but I've definitely decided to stay on the organ donor list. The less you think about it, the less of a problem there is.
