This comes out on December 7th. Who else is really excited for this movie?

I'm kinda bummed they toned down the whole "let's go kill God" thing, since that was pretty much the whole point.

Also interesting that this is causing a bunch of controversy with Church officials. I hope this movie kicks ass, the books are one of my favorite trilogies.

I'm reading through the third book right now, and I really would prefer it if you...you know, didn't say things like "Let's go kill God thing." Not that I hadn't figured out that this would be a part of the plan at this point, and not that we aren't past the statute of limitations on "spoilers," I'd still prefer some restraint.

Also, search function. There's a multi-page thread already on this in the Entertainment forums.

I love this trilogy, it should be really good. I think it's funny that church officials are having a problem with this, especially since Pullman is a Christian, I believe.

He's an athiest. Are you nuts?

He wrote this as a counter to Lewis and his Narnia books because he hates Lewis and thinks we need to relieve children of God in their minds.

The thing that made Narnia so great was that they were childrens books before anything else. As an adult, you can look at it and it relates to Christ and His story but children are entertained because as a writer, Lewis knew exactly what he was doing.

C.W. is far more talented than this hack.

Sounded bad after I wrote it. Didn't want it to be an insult. But yeah, he pretty much wrote this to counter anything Lewis ever penned.

If anything, this idea he has that he will somehow shy children away from God will backfire. Lewis never pounded anything into people's heads about what he wanted you to believe... This on the other hand, well... Read it for yourself.

And Pullman should be giving all the credit to his books and film to Lewis because without him, this guy would be nothing.

yeah I didn't take it as an insult, I just had a major brainfart, I was thinking Lewis, Pullman, and Christianity and somehow wrote the confusing statement.

I thought the third book was horrible when I read it. I'm kinda curious to go back and re-read them now, though. Hmmm...

Either way, I actually like their casting of the girl. I normally hate her (I wanted to kill her in The War of The Worlds) but she fits here. Overall, I get the feeling that they're going to fuck this up though. Sigh.

My churches high school intern sent out this:

"hey ya'll! first, I would like to start by saying you are all amazing!!!! i hope you are having a great week so far (since most of you dont really have a Monday... lil punks...). I just wanted to make you aware of a movie that is coming out on Dec. 7 called The Golden Compass starring Nicole Kidman and the new James Bond guy. This movie is based off an anti-Christian book in a series by a guy who stated "I loathe the 'Narnia' books, I hate them with a deep and bitter passion, with their view of childhood as a golden age from which sexuality and adulthood are a falling away." He has called the series "one of the most ugly and poisonous things" he's ever read. This guy is a fool and going to see this movie is supporting the anti-church movie. PLEASE discourage your friends from seeing it and hopefully it'll be a bust at the box office. People are calling for it to be the big holiday movie this year and even though the movie has been toned down a lot from the books, it is still his movie. I mean the character "God" is killed at the end of the books and he turns out to be fake anyway! sorry for such a long message but i know how outspoken you are and i know what an impact yall can have against this kind of thing! thanks and i love you!!!
in His grip,

Just fyi, but Dakota Fanning and Dakota Blue Richards are in fact different people, regardless of the fact they have the same first name.

i sorta get where you are coming from. the books aren't classics by any means. and he clearly had an agenda when he wrote them but lewis did too even if it isn't as apparent.

and i believe that these books if done right will actually translate to much more entertaining movies than narnia has so far.

Oh, no shit?
I saw the first name, they both look alike (I'm not alone on that, right?)... I just assumed it was the same person.
I guess that explains why my blood didn't start to boil the moment I saw her. Oh well, too bad.

And, I just watched the extended trailer online... and it looks less bad than the trailers at theaters (which had pissed me off because there was no signs of the Daemons, but I'm glad to see that they weren't stupid enough to try and scrap them)... but now I worry about Nicole Kidman's character. In the trailer, all of her acting seemed fairly stiff. I'm still not sold on it. Maybe it's just because I loved the books so much growing up, though. These do have the potential to be really amazing movies, though. So hopefully it all pans out >_>

Yeah, every writer has their own agenda so that's true. I dont know. Just certain things that he has said turn me off.

"There is no doubt in my mind that (Narnia) is one of the most ugly and poisonous things I've ever read."

I don't know, ignoring the dumb things he may have said and regardless of his beliefs, I found this series to be far more engaging than the Narnia series. I'm not a big Narnia guy to be honest, but I loved every second of these books and am very upset that they are done now.

I also think the movie will be better than the mediocrity that was the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I literally just finished the Amber Spyglass. So sad...

the first book came out in 1995 the last one (assuming you count lyras oxford as part of the same continuity) came in 2003 so its been out a while. they were never quite as popular as those other british fantasy novels.

I haven't read the books, but I plan to, and I'm really looking forward to this movie. My roommate loves the books and has gotten me excited about it. Plus, they were filming it when I was in oxford this summer so I think that's pretty cool.

All the Christian fuss over it is annoying... even if he does have an agenda, it's still fiction. When I was a kid (and still now), I read to be entertained, and didn't pay attention to what the author was trying to get me to believe. Maybe if parents would just talk to their kids instead of not allowing them to see a movie, they'd get further anyway.

Yeah, i'm kind of baffled at the sudden reaction. This movie's been in production for a LONG time, and there wasn't any kind of reaction to the books when they were a huge success. I don't think its really going to matter, though, because every indication is that it sucks.

Well you asked is anyone else excited about this movie. And no im not because i don't exactly appreciate the idea of "killing god" even with it being fiction and even with it being toned down. I don't know how they are going present it but its not something i can get behind.

I read the books as very critical of dogmatism and the use of religion to oppress, and not attacking Christianity itself. On an allegorical level, it carries a lot more meaning than simply aiming to "kill God". I suppose different readers take different meaning from the books, but I suspect that dismissing it because of that "idea" without further consideration is a mistake.

Loved the Sally Lockhart books, and I loved this trilogy as well. I read the books back when I was a good, little, christian girl and they didn't make me give it up. Christianity itself did... The church needs to be attacked once in awhile. It needs to reform. I doubt these movies will do it (with their toned downness) but if it does well in the box office maybne people will see that you don't need to be the Passion of the Christ to succeed.

They destroyed the heart of the film and made everything just fucking chipper.

If its true that Tom Stoppard wrote the original screenplay and that this fuckhead Weitz rejected it to write this piece of shit himself, I'm going to go fucking nuts.
