Beating the crap out of an abusive person is in a warped way hypocritical and in a very real way completely ineffective. Sure, it'll make you feel better for a few minutes, but you're going to feel sick afterwards and nothing changes in the long run. You may even make him more abusive.

Let the police deal with the matter if at all possible. Let that fucker spend a couple years in prison. The best punishment for an abusive assohle is to let his asshole get torn up by a couple of burly inmates sentenced to life on soddomy charges.

What's more, is if this guy is really abusive what he needs is not to know how it feels like, but to be thrown in jail and experience all that is the anal-soap-dropped-rape.
