Has anyone heard of this so-called church group? I just heard about them today on CNN and I am disgusted by what they are claiming, and doing to support their claims.

i think it's just something that people learn about around high school. that's when i heard about it and apparently they've been a church since the 50's. I think they just got a lot more notice when they attacked Matthew Shepard on their website.

Damn they make Kansas look terrible. I honestly don't blame whoever for calling it Bible Belt thanks to douchebags like that, along with good old Sam Brownback and hatred for the vile theory of evolution.

Though I personally haven't seen it, I know they've come to the KU campus a few times to protest things like David Sedaris coming to talk. Poop on them!

The Bible doesn't make people like that. Idiots will be idiots with or without religion. Religion just gives the idiots a soapbox and we give them all the attention they want. WBC is a terrible organization, but their message gets spread all over the news and more people just like them will pop up.

Small, nice churches never get noticed. Christians who treat people well never get noticed. WBC gets noticed and makes the world hate all the rest of us. I have nothing to do with those people at all, but I'm sorry that there are Christians like that. I really am.

I'm sure there are plenty of churches that have the same view as this church in particular. It just so happens these people are up front about it.

It's funny though cause nowhere in the new testament does it mention that jesus hates gay people. And it vaguely mentions it in the old testament, but its your own interpretation of the bible.

I'm sure the bible says that homosexuals are evil, etc. but i'm sure God wouldn't wish death upon people, hating them like this group does. "God" isn't supposed to Hate; he's supposed to love the sinners even if they don't worship him.

I read more on this group and their practically the new Nazi. they hate Jews, Catholics, Irish & Swedes?! He supports Saddam Hussein and Castro, and also it didn't say this when I was reading it, but he probably supports the Iranian President Mahoummad.

I love the idea of free speech but sometimes it goes too far. if we're going to promote free speech, we should support free speech that isn't hateful towards any race, gender or creed.

gloriousmuse
11/01/07, 11:38 AM
This doesn't wash at all. God kills people constantly in the old Testament. He killed the entire planet aside from Noah for science's sake.

He hates Sweden cause they locked up the Swedish version of Phelps when he said homosexuals should be killed.

Also he doesn't support those guys in the way you imply and you got the Iranian President's nqame wrong.

So what? We should lock up everyone with any prejudices? Cause I can't see that going all that well to be honest and that's ignoring what a MASSIVE incursion on personal freedom that is.

I knew I had spelled the president's name wrong. I just spelled it as it sounded when I said it. I didn't dare attempt to spell his last name though, I would have slaughtered just as bad.

You make valid points though, especially with the free speech bit. I guess it would take away people's born right. I just don't see why they have to make it public, you know?

This isn't a church, its a closed off family that chooses to call themselves a "church." This is a good ruling, but it does raise first amendment questions.

Kansas is obviously part of the Bible belt. I feel sorry for any sane person who lives there.

Personally i feel the same for any sane person stuck living near the coasts......fortunately they’re few and far between. Kansas can’t be faulted when a southern democrat and Al Gore political buddy chooses to take up residence in the state.

I don't know what you mean by a "reality" that is edited and hidden (I hope you don't quote any Angels and Demons/Davinci Code crap without looking at the broader context of the Christian Church and its history). That's from dictionary.com.

Also, homosexuality is what's hated. The homosexual is committing an abominable act. Please note the difference between the person and his/her actions being "hated."

Please don't try to translate the Bible on your own. That's caused quite a few of the problems that have made Christians look so bad over time. You have to know context and the language. Saying that God hates someone is a pretty strong thing to do, and it's really just not fair.

but what you're essentially arguing is whether or not homosexuals have a choice to be homosexual. I personally believe that it is not a choice and there attraction and desire is genetic. I realize people who believe that homosexuality is a sin think it's something that can be repented for and forgiven as god loves all people. I don't believe anything that is genetic should be sinful.

I think it's the multiple ways Christian's have interpreted the bible over time and the actions they chose based on those interpretations that has made Christian's look bad over time. Non-believers can translate the bible all day long and it would mean nothing if Christian's didn't repeatedly get caught red handed in horrible, hypocritical acts.

I think it's pretty fucking despicable of the church to do something like that or make such a claim. No matter what they think or claim, they are the evil ones in this situation, and I bet that God "hates" these people even more than he would "hate" homosexuals.

People can make a certain religion look so bad and emphasize hypocritical aspects to it, which results in atheists or others generalizing Christians (or any other religion) in a negative way. And both of these issues going on in the war between religion and society is bugging the shit out of me.

well you make an excellent point. the thing that irritates me the most about "christians" and homosexuality, is that we as people are not supposed to judge anyone else. i'm pretty sure that the bible clearly states that's god's job. it isn't our right to pass judgement on someone's sexuality whether you consider it to be a choice or genetic. i agree with you wholeheartedly that its genetic and i don't think god would hate something he created.

So you, "Shoes" of absolutepunk.net knows what an omnipotent being that lives in the sky that no-one has successfully actually communicated with, you know, what he/she/it thinks?

Interesting...

Automatically writing god off is a illogical position because both proving/disproving the existence of god through any known means of logic is impossible. Science, although the greatest epistemology known to man is not infallible and until we can conclude it is the absolute and definite explanation (probably never, but if we can explain natural occurances, etc... to a point where a supernatural creator would not be only unnecessary but absolutely inprobable.) for our universe. And before that happens we will have idiot creationist that could say 'god made it' 'god did it' 'god wanted it to be that way' and you could not disprove them not matter how retarded they are.

Wrong. Literally translating the idea that "all sins are equal" is incorrect. Kinda like how "all men are equal -- separate, but equal."

And then I can just say Flying Spaghetti Monster, which points out nicely and humorously the absurdity of the God of the Gaps.

Yes, FSM is a valid choice too. I'm just merely pointing out that vehemtely denying any possible existence of god no matter how farfetched is almost as ignorant as asserting he exists.

So wait we shouldn't go by what The Bible actually says, we should go by what you want it to say. Epic fail.
It's called reading things in context. The same concept is applied to every other piece of literature out there, why is there some double standard when it comes to the bible? It was written by man in specific time periods with specific purposes in mind.

The fact that you simply believe that Christians follow and must believe every word in the bible is inherently false. Your lack of knowledge of the religion and your constant bashing of those who choose to believe never ceases to amaze me.

Scott Weber
11/03/07, 08:34 AM
The writers of the bible were inspired, especially in the old testament, to write what they did for specific groups of people. Many of the books are simply letters to groups of people. Yes, they were inspired, but it has to be taken contextually, especially if we know as fact they weren't written for today's world.

As for Moby Dick, that's extreme. I was talking more about works of literature that are perhaps non-fiction but rooted in foundations hundreds, or thousands of years old, historical works perhaps.

Nobody assumes they are more than the creator. They are overriding principles of Christianity and the Bible that supercede principles in the old testament, such as...not getting tattoos. Etcetera. Nobody knows the heart of God, I don't claim to, nobody does. We do the best we can with what He has given us, and we must interpret it as we best see right, since there is no clear path laid out for us.

I will be gone all day and won't be able to respond to this. My only hope is that you would stop viewing all Christians in the same, by the book mindset, because they're not all like that.
