We just finished watching this movie in my Themes In Lit. class (as we just finished the novel last week), and I was wondering, if you've seen it, what do you think of it? I thought it was alright. Some cheesey moments, and poor acting at parts, but overall I felt it was pretty good. I thought that Matt Dillon was really good as Dallas, and that Diane Lane was good as Cherry (despite the fact that her role is pretty small in the movie, compared to everyone elses')
Like, one thing for me that put me off was the whole hair cutting scene. C. Thomas Howell going "Owwww!!!" hahaha...it just sounded so forced and stupid. But...overall I enjoyed it. What about you?

yeah i like the book better than the movie, but i love most all of S.E. Hinton's work, it so simple but it pulls you in. 'That Was Then, This is Now' is still my fav book

Oh yeah, I loved the book. And I enjoyed the movie, despite its "off" parts. Plus it gets extra poits for the fact that Tom Waits cameos as Buck Merrill haha. I was like "Whoa, it's Tom!" haha yeah, though...Good movie overall. I heard that it got smashed by the critics when it first came out, but has since become a sort of cult classic.

My apologies then hahaha

I haven't actually read any of Hinton's other novels. I plan to soon though haha.

think of the money the actors in the movie have made over the years: Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Tom Cruise, C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Maccio (both back in the day), and Emilio Esteviez

I love this movie and book. Tex and Rumble Fish were both good books by S.E. Hinton that translated into good movies.

I read it in grade 5 and again in grade 8. We also saw the movie in grade 8 and we all thought the acting was terrible.

Awesome book. I read it in my teen years. I like the movie too. It was good, but an oversimplified version of the book. They cut too much out of the movie and it lacked real emotion. I do think Matt Dillon did a great job though.
If you haven't yet, listen to the original Hit Or Miss by New Found Glory (on Nothing Gold Can Stay).

Yeah I agree. Like...in the movie, it seems like it'd be sort of confusing to anyone whose never read the book, with the parts at the beginning and the end where Ponyboy was narrating ("When I stepped out of the darkness of the movie theater...") It never really shows him doing that in the movie, just them there at the street corner or whatever. And then at the end, it's like he just started to randomly write about all this, instead of clearing it up that it was a class project/writing theme, or whatever. But yes, Matt Dillon was pretty bad-assed in that movie haha.

Have you ever seen the Complete Novel version of The Outsiders? They put all the scenes they filmed but took out, back into the movie. Some would be the beginning where Ponyboy is walking and gets jumped and the greasers show up and save him and also at the end, where the Curtis brothers are all talking. Many more too. I love the book and i love the movie, but this version of the movie is fantastic!!!

Hmm, really? Is this on DVD, then? If so, I'll have to check it out. Because despite the fact that parts were off, and some acting was bad at parts, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit for some reason. Thanks for the heads up on that one, though. Interesting.

I just turned on Nothing Gold Can Stay. It's been years since I've listened to it. Thank you for giving me the idea. Such good stuff/memories.

And yes, like I said, i'd be interested in what they're describing as well. Cheesey as it may be, it's become a classic, apparently haha

I love the book and like the movie too. The acting wasn't that great, but it's still enjoyable to watch. Matt Dillon did a good job portraying Dallas, and he was exactly how I imagined him from reading the book. I really really did not like the guy who played Ponyboy for some reason. It was painful to watch him sometimes.

Yeah I saw this, but I gotta say I liked the original better. The music in this one was horrible; it was like surfer music.. it didn't match at all.

Yeah, I agree. Matt Dillon was really good I thought as Dally, although the only part I had a problem with, with him, was the end where *spoiler spoiler spoiler* he gets shot. It didn't work out as well as it did in the book, plus it happens so fast you're kind of like "wh-what? did he just get shot, and now it's...the next scene already?"
And yeah, C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Maccio weren't the best choices for those roles, in my opinion. They had their moments, but overall, yes, a little painful to watch. But it's still a cool movie. Nothing earth-shattering, but in my opinion, espically with FFC behind the camera, it could've been done much better.

So is this alternate version like, a director's cut, or something, or is it an entierely different movie altogether, with different actors, etc? Maybe I won't check this one out after all...hmmm....

Yeah, it was really sudden. And it didn't really explain how they were each effected by his death like it did in the book. Ralph Maccio was okay, I don't want to bash him though because he is the karate kid.
I thought the same thing about FFC. The Godfather, then The Outsiders?

It's a two disc special edition. It's the same movie with 22 minutes of additional footage, and it has a new soundtrack. The extra footage is added into where it fits; at the beginning when Ponyboy has an encounter with the socs, the court room scene, etc. It's more like the book, but in my opinion it is worse then the original.

And thanks for the info on the DVD. I saw it at Borders today and thought about getting it, but didn't.

Oh yeah, definatley one of my favorites too. A very easy read, yet a really good one at that. If you notice throughout the book, alot of words are misspelled, or whatever, which gives it a really personal quality, like he really wrote all this down, grammatical errors and all.
And like I've said, the movie was good, but it could have been so much better, espically with Francis Ford in the director's chair.

THis was a good movie but the only time I have watched it was in Drama (I didn't choose this class I had to take it) class in the 8th grade. It was almost ruined cause the teacher would interupt to tell us the significance of every scene
God I really hated that class

Oh God I can't imagine haha. Well, that sure would ruin about any movie hahaha. Sorry you had to take that class, though haha. I'm in Themes In Literature right now, and I did choose to take it. It's not that bad. But we had to read the Scarlet Letter. It wouldnt've been so bad had it not been for all the 20-question assingments we had to do each chapter. ugh. haha

Yeah that is definately teh worst part of any literature class, making students dig though chapters to find specific stuff. That and teachers constantly telling you what the author was "really" talking about

Oh yeah, definatley. Digging through "the Scarlet Letter" was hell and half haha, you know? Mostly because the questions were so specific, and so forth.
Luckily, the teacher in that class is actually really cool, so long as you don't piss her off hahaha. She didn't really "tell us" what certain things in the Scarlet Letter were about, she just sort of "explained" certain things that we had trouble understanding, in the context of the time period, and whatnot.
So it is a pretty cool class overall, now that we have "the Scarlet Letter" out of the way hahaha

Yeah, that seems to be the general opinion. The book is brilliant, I think. Definatley one of my favorites. I read somewhere that at first it was banned in schools. Sad. Very sad indeed haha
But yes, the movie was real cool. Just cheesey at parts, with some poor acting here and there.

Weird because I actually watched part of it today. Definitely a classic.
