View Full Version : 100 bands you need to hear?

My friend and I have two completely different tastes in music. A while back he made this list he called "100 bands you need to hear". He said that everyone of these bands or artists either started, influenced or define their genre, and that listening to these bands at least once would give you a good understanding of where the music we listen to today came from. Personally, I think his list is terrible; I would get rid of half the bands he named. When it comes to music my friend is sort of an elitist. He thinks what he listens to is all that exists and no other bands in other genres played any part in developing music. Here's his list:

I disagree with a lot of it, but don't have enough knowledge to make a list of my own and refute him. If you agree with this list than okay, but if not, help me make a new list of "100 bands you need to hear" with more of an ap.net feel to it.

It has a lot of good and important bands on there but it is too geared towards hard rock/heavy metal to be an all encompassing list. There are several genres misrepresented or absence. I like his effort though, I dont think i listen to enough different kinds of music to make much better of a list.

some bands/artists i definitely agree with, some i really don't & could easily be replaced (coheed & cambria, sublime, etc). list could do with some b.b. king, the skatalites, paul simon, michael jackson, r.e.m., sly & the family stone, james brown, tinariwen, elvis costello, talking heads, van morrison, stevie wonder, johnny 'guitar' watson, marvin gaye, chuck berry, ladysmith black mambazo, crowded house, wilson pickett, otis redding, ray charles, king tubby, aretha franklin, etc off the top of my head for starters. but if you were to include modern bands (90's onward?) it'd be interesting

I think you should take some of the more heavier bands off (but not Bodom) because not all of them are really worthy to be on there. And I also would take off Incubus because I feel they aren't really very special in any way; their guitars are alright, the vocals are alright, the lyrics are alright...nothing is really great.
Personally, I think you should add Death Cab because there are a great amount of bands that imitate them (Pompeii, for one) and I feel they define a specific sort of emo/indie genre; and Weezer (the definition of nerd rock). It seems like you are looking for a big range of genres so I feel these really should be added.

Also - Lupe Fiasco, Deltron 3030, Gorillaz (I think they are a highly original band in many aspects) and possibly De La Soul should be added (hey! hip-hop needs some representatives, too)

Okay, there are many bands on there that really shouldn't be (The Dilinger Escape Plan, or The Misfits), but seriously....
According to you, Foo Fighters > The Beatles? Are you fucking kidding me?

The Foo Fighters have never had one single song that comes even close to touching any of The Beatles songs.
Or anything by Jimi Hendrix.
Or anything by Bob Dylan.

I mean, these guys really defined rock and roll! And I'm leaving out more classics like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc.

Seriously, you have all of those bands to thank for the Foo Fighters even existing (however good that may or may not be).

even if they defined rock music for what a lot of it is today the music i listen to shares no similairty to any of those majorly influential bands other than the fact they use electric guitars and drums. i respect a lot of those bands but that doesnt mean i have to like them. i mean, what, are we all supposed to be major elvis fans just because hes the father of rock?

Muse but no Radiohead?

I agree with a lot of that list. But as someone said previously, too geared towards rock/heavy music.

And I'm not sure when this list was made? But one thing that annoys me is when people who listen to 'classic rock' or all the old critically acclaimed music overlook modern music. There are still bands existing today that are being creative and somewhat original and definitely making good music, and I don't think they should be overlooked just because they released an album in the last 10 years.

Lets all be open minded and listen to music from all eras is what I say.

Music can't evolve over time? Everything has to change, because who really wants to listen to the same band over and over? I'm just saying that they have definitely started rock and roll and everything's just changed over time.
I'm not saying everyone needs to go out right now and buy every single Elvis CD or every Beatles t-shirt you can find, but I just think you should respect them a WHOLE LOT more than the Foo Fighters, who are possibly the worst representation of rock.
Saying ew to the Beatles really isn't respectful.

Kevmatkel
11/12/07, 08:16 PM
First of all, your friend failure to include Bruce Springsteen is a travesty. I don't care what you think about his music, but to deny him a place on a list that supposedly is one of bands that redefined music is a joke. Springsteen should be up there. Also, your friend has a pretty narrow taste in music--mostly metal/hard stuff. And I don't have a problem with that genre, but it is woefully overrepresented. He is missing a lot of important 90's indie bands that truly redefined the music that you hear today. Guys like Modest Mouse, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, Neutral Milk Hotel are extremely important bands. And HOW THE HELL IS THERE NO RADIOHEAD?

Kevmatkel
11/12/07, 08:18 PM

I understand that, but usually when you need to hear a band it's because they are worthy of your time and therefore your respect.
I just have a hard time believing you. Most people don't go around saying "Ew, I totally respect that band."
I think one of the reasons I got upset is just the fact that you say Ew to everything except the Foo Fighters because "they have some pretty sweet songs". They are one of the worst rock bands out there and you are saying ew to 99 other bands. Their guitar parts are really lacking in the variety department, and his vocals are awful. The drums aren't spectacular and neither is the bass. But still, it's the only band out of 100 that you like.

Pretty decent list
Not a fan of every band on there but your list has some pretty talented bands in it
Not sure if nirvana was on there though (If they are then sorry) but they'd definatly be on my top 100 list
Three of the most talented musicians to ever be in a band
