Yes. It's better than Fight Club and Se7en.

This is a bit farfetched. The movie is excellent, but not as good as Fight Club and Se7en. I would say it is just as good or falls a little bit short. And that is saying something.

This is Finchers masterpiece. Yes, check it out.

Robert Downey Jr. and Gyllenhaal are great in it.

One of my favorites of 2007.

And yes, this is Fincher's best film followed by Se7en. Next I'd put Fight Club, Panic Room, The Game, and Alien 3.

I think The Game is a great film and overlooked by too many people. It doesn't get enough credit. Same with Panic Room.

The only problem I had with this movie was that after the killings stopped, it just moved sooooooooooo slow. But it had amazing acting that somewhat made up for it.

Alien 3
The Game

If I had to rank Fincher's films i'd go:

Zodiac
Se7en
Panic Room
Fight Club
Alien 3
The Game

Mine would looks something like:

Se7en
Fight Club
Zodia
Panic Room
The Game
Alien 3

note: the first three are all too close to really say for sure. Those three movies are some of my all time favorites. It is really hard placing one in front of the other, so more realistically it would look more like:

Zodiac/Se7en/Fight Club
The Game
Alien 3

I would disagree with that as a generality. I could see someone not wanting to watch it multiple times, as it is not a film that has universal appeal. On the other hand, I think it has incredible replay value if you become even slightly emotionally or intellectually attached to the case. I've already seen it 3 or 4 times and will not hesitate to buy this when it comes out in January.

Zodiac
Se7en

The Game

I agree minus The Game. I am so close to sticking Panic Room above Fight Club. Such a great thriller.

I felt Jared Leto owned that movie. Yoakum was a bastard too and I loved it. He plays that part so well. Did a great job of being a bastard in Sling Blade too.

I finally got to see this last night, fantastic. I knew I would like it because Fincher and because it's about Zodiac, but it was great overall. In the scene where Zodiac killed the couple by the lake, I felt bad about watching because it felt so damn real. Which is a sign they did something very right.

I can see how many people would say it moves to slow, but those are the people who want to go to a movie for ninety minutes and see explosions or horrible punch lines. This is the first movie I have seen in a very long time that truly had suspense. When Graysmith was in the basement and the whole scene leading up to it, my heart rate was through the roof. I could actually feel it going faster and faster to the point I was trying to calm myself down.

The movie built and built and it was damn near perfect. One of the best movies I've seen and the SE has now been added of my list to get soon.

Did you go into it thinking it would be original? In no way could it be, otherwise it wouldn't be doing the story justice.

Fight Club wasn't too "original", for a movie that is.

Fight Club and Se7en have been near the top of my list for a long, long time, but this one went past both of them for me.

The incredible thing is that even if you know just a little bit or even a ton about the case, you're still on the edge of your seat and completely involved the entire time, something which takes a tremendous amount of skill for a director to accomplish.

Exactly! I'm making my parents watch it tonight, both know nothing about Zodiac at all, so it should be interesting. I told my mom I knew quite a bit about the case, but the more the film went on, the more I became involved and really felt suspense for the first time in a very long time.

No I guess not, but thats why I was disappointed in Fincher, for tackling a subject that has already been made into a movie, more than once. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, I guess I just have a soft spot for his older work.

How is Fight Club not original? I know the split personality thing has been done before, but that isn't even what makes the movie good to me.

Yes, it was done before. In the book. So if Zodiac wasn't original because people are familiar with it and it's been done before; Fight Club isn't that original due to those reading the book knowing everything that would happen in the film.

If thats the case with Zodiac, it must be the case with Fight Club. Both are fantastic, but going by the same logic, neither are original.

Just watched this movie yet again. I agree w/ "Ender Dove" when he said how real the scene felt when the couple was murdered(except the dude lived) how real it felt. I think what makes the movie so awesome too is the infamy of the story. A lot of people don't like the ending b/c they don't feel it provided "closure" but I think that is what makes it so great. The case is still remains open and the only true lead they had is dead.

Everytime I see the ending where Jake Gyllenhal looks Leigh in the eyes, I always feel that Leigh knows that he knows something and shoots him this glance that makes me so mad, b/c I know it has to be him and he knows it. There are very few movies that can make you feel like that.

This can not come out soon enough.

The fact that it was a book before isn't what makes it an unoriginal topic, a lot of very original movies are based on books. The fact that there have been more than one movie made about the zodiac killer, and other similar serial killers, before this one was made does make it an unoriginal topic.

I still liked the movie, its probably better than other movies on the same topic, but I just like Fight Club and Se7en a lot more, obviously our opinions differ.

For me, having it be a movie based on a serial killer doesn't make it at all unoriginal because there have been others focused on serial killers. The killer's identity was not known, where as most serial killer movies simply focuses on the killer themselves.

Do I think a movie can't be original because the book came first? No. But I wouldn't say Fight Club itself was original, maybe it's because I love the book so much. One thing is for sure, I love the movie, too.

Have there been movies based on the Zodiac killer, of course. Does that make this movie unoriginal, in a sense yes, but it seemed like you said a drawback of the movie was that it wasn't original, even though and it had no chance to be if it were to contain facts.

Do we disagree, maybe, or we just don't know exactly what the other is trying to say. Either way, no hard feelings, especially since you enjoy good movies.

aminorthreat55
11/17/07, 11:19 PM
The fact that people failed miserably to tell the same story earlier should have no bearing on whether or not Zodiac is "original." Besides, the notion that a topic can only be depicted once before it is rendered "unoriginal", I think is quite misguided. I think the combination of story and execution is what should be taken into account, not just one or the other.

It is a great movie. Are you suprised there isn't an insert? 99% of DVDs no longer come with them and are generic disc art. It's annoying. It seems like the standards for DVDs went down hill, real quick. It really get pissed. But what can I do about it? Because I can't not buy the movies I love enough to own. Oh well, I'm going to get back to the movie.

Criterion DVD's always come with a booklet with stories, reviews, and other random tidbits about the movie. Plus a lot of their boxart look sweet.

Animal crackers?

i'm not surprised regular $14.99 dvd's (price usually on release tuesday) don't come w/ them. But w/ a 2-disc directors cut edition i kinda expected something more

Or even when they include the screenplay (Two-Lane Blacktop) or the book the screenplay was adapted from (The Man Who Fell to Earth).

Excellent buy, too bad it didn't come in packaging similar to either Se7en or the Fight Club 2 disc special edition.

I've been watching this with the commentary again, and the special features.

This is without a doubt the best movie of the decade, and it's definitely the best movie I've ever seen.

Love this movie...still feel its way underrated. Also, opening song in the movie "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is so fucking creepy. Brilliantly used.

Due to the recent poll, which everyone should go vote for, I can't help but bump this thread.

I can't say enough about it. It's perfect. I need to finally buy a BluRay player just so I can buy this again.

Sucks so bad that the Blu-ray Disc is always so fucking expensive everywhere.

The 2-disc is SO worth it. Just take the plunge and enjoy the documentaries included.

Nice bump, I still can't get over how good and how interesting this movie was.

What all is on this 2 disc? and I'm assuming it's worth a pick up?

The packaging had so much promise. Still disappoints me.
