View Full Version : A perfect example of my frustrations with a lot of music right now:
Me & My Arrow

Just go listen to the beginnings of these two songs (wait for the intro to end for National Product):
"The Fight" - The Classic Crime (www.purevolume.com/theclassiccrime)
"By All Means" - National Product (www.purevolume.com/nationalproduct)
I'm sure I'll hear about how the rest of the songs are different, but the fact of the matter is that this just flat out sucks. How frustrating is it to go listen to a new band and discover an riff that not just reminds you of something else, but sounds as though it could be straight-up ripped out of another song? The waves of bands that get popular always have these disgustingly similar characteristics, all the way from the drum beats, to the guitar sounds, and even to the damn keys they play in. The entire National Product album, in spite of its guilty pleasure tendencies, sounds like a complete rehash of every pop/punk/emo/screamo/anything-core band I've heard in the past three or four years.
Anyone else have an example of this?

I don't know if fall out boy can be considered as an example, but now they're definitly beginning to sound like everything else out there (in my opinion). But you're right on that point- every popular artist sounds the same. Singers like Beyonce and Rhianna are so similar that I can never tell them apart. But then again, that's what makes underground bands so beautiful :-P

Lol ok... my lips are sealed *zips lips*
I never really liked Rhianna even BEFORE Umbrella came out- but seriously, she sounds just like Beyonce and Ciara and all those other girls. Then again, I don't really listen to that kind of music, SO...

well, a large majority of new music today is a major re-hashing of the music that came out years/months ago by bigger and/or better bands. And they all sound the same, same key, same chord progression, same vocal-ness. And all the fucking bands look the same. Pick up the latest (or any issue) of Alternative Press, and all the bands look exactly the same. Eh...

Shitty trends in music are nothing unique to this year, or this decade. If you can't find modern music that you like, you're not looking hard enough.

Listen to the melody of the chorus for Patron Saints of Liars and Fakes - Fall Out Boy and the chorus of Cute Without The E - Taking Back Sunday.

anyone who thinks that any band is being original, just hasnt listened to the right bands from the past.
at this point is not about doing something thats never been done before. its about doing it in your own style.
the C G A F chord progression has been used by every pop punk band......well ever.
you can find similar chord progressions in every song, or similar riffs everywhere.
there are only so many things you can do with a guitar and a distortion pedal. but its more just about taking that stuff, and taking your influences and making it your own, and doing it your own way and in your own style.

There will always be similarities between bands and comparisons to be drawn. If you've come to terms with that, you may find poignant, interesting music by forgoing the more prominent acts in favor of lesser-known artists. Furthermore, you might as well give genres beyond the pop/rock realm a listen.

The first two lines in each sound almost identical

Good example. I've been listening to both of those songs for a long time, and i never noticed how similar they were.

Both of these are bad assumptions: I have a lot of modern music that I do enjoy, and I do listen to genres beyond the pop/rock realm. Nothing in this post counters that.

If my assumption is erroneous, you should have no grounds to be frustrated with modern music.

That's not true...modern music isn't just one entity. If you'll look at the title of the post, it says A LOT of music right now. That doesn't mean there isn't good music, I'm just frustrated with this particular portion of music.

Shouldn't common sense lead you to shun the artists who frustrate you in order to wholly enjoy the music you do appreciate?

Of course. That still doesn't go against anything I've said thus far. During my random web-searching for new music, I came across this, and it's a trend that bothers me. Are you not supposed to discuss things that frustrate you as well as those that you enjoy and appreciate? Even if you dislike their music you can still talk about it (provided that you've heard it). And, I also made the point that I enjoy some of National Product's music.

I typically refrain from whining about issues that don't agree with me.

Whining? How about bringing up a discussion on something completely relevant to a forum filled with people that talk about music. If this isn't the thread for you that's alright, I'm sure you can find another.

I'd equate expressing your frustration on an issue that's been prevalent in the industry for years to whining. Then again, maybe it's just me.
