Do you feel that the US is the greatest nation on earth? If so, why? If you disagree, state why and what country or countries you consider to be the best. also, when explaining why, discuss what criteria are important for you when deciding the best countries.

lol, can this be any more loaded?
personally, id rather live in ireland or england, or at least in Europe. My biggest gripe with the US is how its basically become not just a service based economy, but that its beholden to corporate power. Since I abhor corporate business, Id rather not try to buck the system, and would just relocate.

i've only been out of the country once and don't know enough about other countries around the world, so obviously i will go with the US. I like the fact that you can come from nothing and achieve success in this country. I'd like to visit Australia. Great weather and such low crime rates. everyone i know that has visited has loved it. Crime rates is a major factor for me and that is one of the major cons of the US.

Canada also has a low crime rate. Ive heard its very similar to australia.
one thing that i worry about is unemployment. While the US rate hovers at around 4-6%, the time between jobs averages 6-9 months (if not more). And sometimes unemplyoment runs out before a job is found. I think more needs to be done in that regard. I remember when i was living in Toronto with my fiancee, the rate was 11%, but turnaround was 90 days or less.

I'll favor Australia because I don't think I could handle that Canadian weather.

they're extreme opposites. One is frigid, one is intense.
Id go with Canada. Comparable exchange rate to US currency, easy access to family.

That is terrible reasoning. It would be similar to an individual drawing a conclusion about which restaurant is the best in their town without going to any of them.
I like the fact that you can come from nothing and achieve success in this country.
Other countries have more social mobility than the United States. Canada and Norway would be good examples.
As for my opinion, it is ridiculous to rate countries in such a manner.

Captain Hampton proves yet again he is a total moron.
America is the most powerful without a doubt.
But it isn't the best on healthcare, education, social rights, living standards, corruption, culture etc.. and since those are the measures by which I wish to judge a country then I went with no.
the US has the best doctors in the world. UK has a terrible cancer survival rate. great health care you have.

You mean pussies attempting Rugby?
Nah I don't think so.
Also saying American sports suck is the easiest and most effective flame bait going. So many losers fall for it every time.
pussies? NFL football players are pussies? HAHA. most ignorant thing you've ever said on this site. and that is saying something. you have no fucking idea what you are talking about.

No. Outside of the United States I've only actually been to Canada, but in my experience I would prefer Canada. From what I've read and from what my relatives have told me, Finland and Sweden are also much better countries.

to add to lunchforthesky calling american football players pussies: at least when american football players go off on stretchers, they don't come back. they don't go off the field in a stretcher for getting kicked in the shin and then return after 30 seconds.

"best" implies of the highest measure, but the highest measure of what? country? is that some unit? no, it isn't. You're oversimplifying. You have to specify best in what, exactly. Standard of living? Morality? Functionality of government? internal stability? wealth? amount of land? number of people killed? number of people saved?
I suggest a rewrite

What kinda of losers wear so much padding.
they should take it like men.
and that's before getting on to how pointlessly stop/start the game is.
Good sports flow properly and are continous like real football, rugby, hockey and basketball.
Although I personally don't care for basketball.
again, ignorance. the speed and hitting in football is so much more than rugby that they require pads. if the guys in the nfl were hitting each other without pads, they would get seriously injured. i respect rugby players, it's a tough sport, but the guys in the NFL are so much bigger and faster.

Total crap.
And another thing that is shitty about American Football is that the players exist only to do one job.
Good sports involve the whole team contributing to everything together simultaneously.
not one guy to do every job.
this is supposed to be a sport not the fucking Ford factory.
it isn't total crap. you've never seen the size and speed differences with NFL players. obviously you've never seen a live football game.

Wrong again.
One player.
And he's still on the pitch all the time and acts in a similar manner to a defender at times and some even come up for corners in the last minutes.

My point was, an individual should not be making conclusions if they've not experienced other countries; otherwise you're not simply making biased statement, you are making unfounded statements.
i didn't say that the US was the only country you could go from nothing to wealth.
You labeled it as a reason you consider it as one of the best countries, however, statistics show that it is not the best in terms of social mobility.

but seriously, America is the best. It has its flaws, but we have the capacity to fix them. I challenge anyone to show how any other country has contributed more to benefit the world than the good ol' USA. It may be easy to rag on America these days, but for every bad thing in our history, there has been an opposing, and inspiring force that has equally contributed to the evolution that is American democracy. Whether it be government, politics, science, engineering, architecture, art, entertainment, technology, media, business, and entrepreneurship etc... we have contributed greatly and consistently. Plus, the guy who created AP is American.
senatorlamb
11/15/07, 04:06 PM
That's total bullshit. A country like America has existed for 200 years has no way contributed as much or more than plenty other countries. Sure America has mattered for the past 100 years but previous to that ehh. Democracy was a good thing but even that was stolen from the Greeks and basic human nature plus like the Greeks you had slaves etc.. Really the Europeans were the first proper democracies as we abolished slavery first and Australia/New Zealand gave women the vote first.
It's just my opinion. Everyone should believe their country is the best. I'm not talking about jingoism or faux patriotism, I'm talking about pride in your country's accomplishments.
USA! USA! USA!

Lamb, let us discern people from country. For example, I admire Martin Luther King, and the Civil Rights Movement, but, in no way, do I associate it with America. Further, one should take into consideration how others view one's country. So, for example, one should ask an El Salvadoran whether or not the US is the best country in the world. Invariably, they'll bring up death squads, and things of that nature, and then one can begin speaking about the vast accomplishments brought about at the same time.

i wouldnt consider the US a great country since it's been around for what, 250 or something years. Compare that age with a lot of other countries you will find that the US is still young and learning, and with youth comes mistakes that involve its people.

How can one 'rate' a country when they've never been out of the one in which they currently live? I have no stance on this. All I know is the United States and I've never studied other countries' policies in depth to know if they are "better."
Maybe it's just me, but I don't like this thread idea.
