Mainstream isn't bad - until it starts exploiting our music, our fasion, and starts bringing 13 year old bimbos to shows who only go to pick up guys because it's the "cool thing to do". They expect local bands to sound like simple plan and get pissed when they don't.

I don't know about thirteen-year-old girls getting pissed off or trying to pick up guys at concerts, but I would agree that there is something annoying about this genre of music suddenly jumping into the spotlight.
It'll be a sad day when MTV has chewed up and spit out punk rock (in all its forms) and moved on to the next big thing.
Why is everyone that is into punk music so anti-mainstream it pisses me off.
Agreed - there are some really stupid old YC fans who absolutely despise anybody who became a YC fan after "Ocean Avenue" was released. It seems that many people think that if you haven't known about a band for more than two years, you aren't cool.
Personally, I'd think that fans would be glad to welcome new members into the fold. People like Poor Excuse, with his rambling about various bands selling out, annoy the hell out of me.

Mr. Alwayspunkin - it pisses you off that I don't enjoy my music becoming the "in-thing"? It pisses you off that I'm upset that music companies have realized there is money to be had in punk music, and have begun exploiting it, producing a nation of avril lavigne wanna-be's? It pisses YOU off that I don't enjoy the fact that the way I dress used to set me apart from people, but now I can't leave the house without being asked if I like Good Charlotte and Not by Choice, accompanied by moronic laughter?
Good to know.
nards228
10/25/03, 02:00 PM
I'm not so sure that that's what he's saying. We've had threads similar to this in the past about the concept of selling out, and the general consensus seemed to be that if you really like the music, you shouldn't mind the band becoming popular. And in this world, becoming popular means making money, and making money means selling more merch, getting more CDs out there, and so on.
If you're just into the music for the fashion statement, then I guess it's fine to be upset about music becoming mainstream. Not that you are, that's just my perception of the situation.

you have a used avatar ? they are now mainstream. live with the whole concept of punk and its sub genres becoming popular all of a sudden. who the fuck cares. and frankly, its pointless to complain or be pissed off about it.
and seriously, why did you need to bring not by choice into this discussion ? those guys are some of my closest friends. i grew up with them and im extremely happy about their success.
Milonater
10/25/03, 02:09 PM
Pardon me, did I ever say I wasn't allwoed to enjoy a band that was mainstream? Remember their roots, they didn't start there.
And Not By Choice, I respect your friendship with them, but their music...not..good. I'm not looking for a fight here, don't bring me one.
MaybeOneDay
10/25/03, 02:12 PM
Nor did Not By Choice. Do you think they just became mainstream in a matter of seconds ? Fuck, dude I remember them playing my local town fair each year for gods sake. Good times, and im happy for them.
I'm not looking to start a fight here either, as I have no doubt in my mind that I would win.
Milonater
10/25/03, 02:15 PM
Nobody would win, what would happen is we'd get in a pointless argument over why I think they're nothing special or new, and you'd defend them beacuse they are your friends. And since arguing is not big on my list, I'd really rather not.
- by the way, I edited out my stupid comment. Of course the used wasn't always mainstream, I worded it wrong. No band was always mainstream, it's all gotta start somewhere.

Like i've said countless times before, the sad thing is, it's true. My age, is higher than your IQ.
However, the thing I don't get is, how you can insult people just because they're younger than you. So basically what your saying is, if you were the EXACT same person you are right now, but a couple years younger or so, you'd be a "teenybopper ******" too? Hmm, makes sense. Becuases that's exactly what you are, a ******.
But what really makes me laugh, is that your post contained some of the worst gramatical/spelling errors I have ever seen. In all honesty, I don't believe you say how old you are. And in fact, I strongly believe you are an 11 year old child who joined the circus and immigrated to Texas from Albania. Either way, you're still a homosexual.

An individual doesn't give a fuck about standing out. An individual does his own thing regardless of what the pack is doing.
And Milonater - your repeated slanders against homosexuals are immature. If you want to insult somebody, find a more creative way to do it than "******," "homosexual," "queer," or "gay." That'd be a step in the right direction in proving that young age and immaturity are not directly related.

Dear Rennard:
First of all, we talked about this.
Secondly:
I can't find ONCE in this whole damn post where I said anything about homosexuals, so get off your damn soap box, before I kick it out from under you. It has become part of the social norm to call someone a *** when they are being an idiot, I don't even associate it to homosexual people, and don't even TRY to play innocent, in real life let's face it, you've called someone a ***. Prove me wrong, I dare you. Seriously.
Pull the log out of your eye before trying to help me with the twig in mine. In plain english: you're not perfect. So can it.
Thirdly: I don't refute the fact that an individualist does not care about the pack - to an extent. When the pack starts to copy the individualist, I think he's allowed to be rather pissed.
You like to pretend you're the authority on everything.
I make myself look like a jerk everytime I counter attack your endless bull shit. For the sake of mine and your reputation, never make reference to me again. I'm here to have fun and chat, not engage in a piss fest. I don't care if you have other plans.

First of all - my deepest apologies to Milonater. It was MaybeOneDay who posted about the "****" and whatnot. So Milo, that's why I thought you were being an idiot, talking about how mature you were and then saying stuff like that.
Becuases that's exactly what you are, a ******.
Either way, you're still a homosexual.
Just seems a little immature to me. And Milo - regardless of whether or not YOU associate that word with homosexuality, it still has that denotation, so it isn't your right to use it any way you like. You have to keep in mind the idea that it can and will offend some people. Not that you do.
If it seems like my "endless bullshit" is an attempt to bring you down, you're wrong in thinking that. I have nothing against you personally. You take things a little too personally and a little too seriously sometimes, that's all.

I think, by new fans, they mean people who hear one song and then think the band is their favourite, go to their show, and try and act like their punk. You can't be punk after hearing one song. It's just like for any other genre, to be punk you need to respect the music, respect the lyrics, and listen to the songs frequently. Personally, I listen to music like most people watch TV. The only time I'm not listening to music is when I'm sleeping or in that teacher's class who doesn't let you listen to your discman. If music is good, then I'll listen to it. Hardcore, Pop-Punk, Acoustic Punk. I'm not saying that I'm punk, because I can't judge myself, but if other people want to look at me like that, fine by me.
If I go to a Yellowcard show and am standing next to a 13 year old who is singing along word by word and screaming out what the next song will be, I'm okay with that, the kid likes the music obviously if he's singing along, and he listens to the music almost as much as I do. But if I go to a show and there's a 13 year old who is like 'what the fuck is this song?' when something other than Way Away comes on, I don't think that person should be there, and I don't think that person is really a fan.

ok, i admit, thats annoying...id be lying if i said otherwise.
but still, in the interest of the bands continuing to make some money from what they do and, in turn, being able to make more music...those fans are needed.
plus, i wouldnt even call them fans...id consider them more like record sales....since thats about all theyre going to do.
