View Full Version : Fall Out Boy secret show with Four Year Strong @ Mohawk Place in Buffalo, NY 11-19-07

First i wanna say that I couldn't believe how small the venue was. It looked/felt like the capacity was 150 ppl. There were also no barricades and no venue security, so doing anything was allowed and kinda encouraged. It was also cool to see that there were a fair amount of older ppl opposed to kids who fit under Rob Dobi's description of "#1 Pete Wentz Fan".
I was dying for Four Year Strong to come on stage since i was stuck standing around listening to retarded "elitest" fan girls bitching about Fall Out Boy fans. Here's one of the things I over heard them saying: "I wish this show was 18+ because these kids won't even know any of the songs off Take This To Your Grave since it came out in 2000".
TTTYG came out in 2000? that's news to me LOL

Four Year Strong went on first and they played:
(in no order)
Abandon Ship Or Abandon All Hope
Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die
Catastrophe
Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Hell
Bada Bing! Wit A Pipe!
Beatdown In The Hey Of Happy
Maniac (R.O.D)

They were awesome. The stage room was extremely tiny for them because of having to set up their equipment in front of Fall Out Boy's and the stage is already small to begin with. All the band members were like performing too close to each other that there was barely any space at all for them to rock out. They finally got the crowd into it starting from the 2nd last song.
On a side note, they have really cool merch at low prices.

Fall Out Boy was next. There were no stage props or banners. There was a camera crew around the whole venue filming the whole thing.
They played:

(in no order)
the entire Take This To Your Grave album
+
Walk (Pantera cover featuring Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die on vocals)

OH MY GOD, can't believe how amazing this show was! It got pretty violent: Stage diving, hardcore dancing, pile-ons, everything! I would have never imagined being able to stage dive at a Fall Out Boy show now a days. All of the crowd action mentioned above was allowed and kinda encouraged. It actually felt like I was at a "hardcore" show. Plus, there was even pit beef just like at hardcore shows. Buffalo, NY kids take shit pretty serious since I saw 2 guys lying on the ground defenseless being stomped and punched by like 5 guys. A lot of the "#1 Pete Wentz Fan" girls didn't last long in the crowd at all. I was even more shocked to hear them play Pantera with Keith Buckley on vocals. It was Keith's birthday that day and Fall Out Boy gave a shout out to him + Every Time I Die. They also had a cake for him which ended up being thrown into his face then whatever was left was thrown into the crowd. The show ended pretty early too, like at 9:40pm.

In the end, it was a really amazing show and amazing experience being in the crowd for it. A ridiculous amount of energy throughout Fall Out Boy's set. I wish all Fall Out Boy shows were like this in regards to loose security, no barricades, and all out chaos.
This has to be one of the best shows I've ever attended in my whole life, and I've been to a ridiculous amount of concerts too.

p.s. Every one should go out and support Four Year Strong if they happen to be playing a show in a town near you. Really awesome, hard working, and nice band that deserves more attention. Pick up the CD too.

I was there. This was definitely the best show I have ever been to. FYS + TTTYG FOB? Perfect.

The crowd was crazy. Patrick almost got knocked over by crowd surfers, Joe stage dived. It was just amazing.

They've done secret shows before at Chain Reaction in Anaheim. I would doubt Chain would get another one, but who knows. Maybe The Alley in Fullerton? Troubador in LA?

I'm in the same situation. I always hear about these "secret shows" after the fact... except for the Brand New myspace secret show back in April.

Walk?

There have been precisely 0 bands so far that have done justice to that solo. (I'm looking at you, Avenged Sevenfold) - However, Buckley's probably one of the few in the 'scene' that i would trust doing Anselmo vocals. Sounds like a cool show.

Now bring out the kids who bitch that they sold out when they released 'evening with your girlfriend'.

Fucking, eh. Lucky you.

I'm definitely keeping an eye out for a secret show here in SoCal. Aside from KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas last year (where they weren't that greeat), the only time i've caught 'em live was at their secret show at Chain Reaction back in May (where they were awesome). It seems like the smaller shows are the best way for me to experience this band.

and yeah, Four Year Strong are awesome live.

As far as secret shows, I'd keep an eye out for The Boardwalk in Orangevale and Slim's in SF. The Boardwalk is probably a little more likely than Slim's as its smaller, fits the no barricade style, and they played it on each of their smaller tours back in the day. The walls of the venue touch the stage, gear is loaded straight in from the bus, pretty sure the backstage is a couch in a hallway, and FOB always did a stellar job there.

Bahhhh. I wish they still played small tours :(

And did they really play EVERY song off TTTYG? Because as far as I know...they don't play The Pros and Cons of Breathing live. (I think it's that song). It's even mentioned on the enhanced part of the director's cut that they don't play it live.

edit: the 26th could be anywhere in socal, the 28th could be anywhere between socal and san jose. but its like ...5 days from now, so I'd imagined it would have come out before then.

they did play pros and cons and said it was the first and last time they played it live. Thats pretty special. They played under Schrute Farms, a reference to the office, which Pete mentions in his blog a lot so some fans got the hint. There are no news as of yet as to the next secret show if there will even be one.

PS If there is a recording of this and released on a dvd i would pay gigantic amounts of money for it

i'm still in post-excitement from the show...
if you're able to find out about the west coast secret show, definitely do whatever you can to goto it! Best FOB experience you'll ever get in this time period!

At the Buffalo show i was at, there were some ppl who paid from $50-150 for a scalped ticket and said that it was worth every penny spent. After attending the show, i'd also agree that it would be worth spending an insane amount for a ticket if i had no way in.

if they play the whole cd, which is easily one of my top 10 favorites i would pay upwards to $150 at this moment. if i had a job i would pay at the most $500. i mean its a one in a lifetime opportunity to see your favorite band performing one your favorite cd's all the way through.

yeah, thats exactly the way i felt. I definitely would have shelled out a lot of money for a ticket if i didn't have a way in.
I don't think i'll ever get the opportunity again to see them just play the entire TTTYG album... plus to see them perform a Pantera song with Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die too... such a rare opportunity!

That is so awesome. I did not have a ride, and tix were sold out, and I had seen Motion City Soundtrack the night b4, so I guess there were reasons I didn't go. Still, TTTYG is 1 of my favorite albums and to see that played in order in an intimate setting would have been incredible

check the venues in that area. i already checked chain reaction and the alley and both dont have anything for the two open dates they might do it.

or i have better taste in music than you do :)

musically under a cork and infinity on high are better albums. There's no arguments here. I admit to not being the biggest fall out boy fan, my taste varies from the pop music genre. Take this to your grave is an amateur record, I'm not saying it isn't good but like i said it doesn't reach the musical flexibility that the next two did. It's like comparing brand news's your favorite weapon to "deja" or "devil and god" the only way i can see you saying that yfw is better is if your a 12 year old kid and you don't understand the art of what deja and devil and god represent

Except Deja and Devil and God show a great deal of maturity on the lyrical front. There's a level of depth and passion in Brand New's lyrics that FOB would never be able to match--despite the similar era and sound both of their debut's share. But whatever.

I went to one of their concerts... they were kicking off the YWT tour in columbus, for what reason I will never understand, but anyway, I was suprised at how much old stuff they played too. I went with a bunch of my freinds, who were pretty much terrible and only knew thanks for the memories and sugar we're going down. The concert really was amazing, even though all of them were really dissapointed by it. I wish i could have been down on the floor, instead up in the stands, (some of the other girls were worried about mosh pits... psh.), it looked like alot of fun.
The show wasn't nearly as bad as they're made out to be...

when you grow up with a band, such as fall out boy or brand new, the first album of theirs is always going to be special. altough their next albums may be musically better it doesnt mean you will like them more, i am emotionally attached to Take This To Your Grave and there is nothing i can do about it, it was mostly what i listened to in 8th and 9th grade. plus TTTYG songs are much better live. Many long time brand new fans feel the same way about YFW im sure.

Hahaha, I went to the Young Wilds Things with my older sister and it was her first gen. admin. show and she got tired like, 20 minutes into it so we ended up standing by the 'mom' wall the entire night. It was hilarious to watch the mom's rocking out.
