View Full Version : Upconverting DVDs on the 360?

I finally got a HDTV and I love it... but my 360 is one of the older ones that doesn't have a HDMI port, and my DVDs look like shit running in 1080i or 720p through the component cables on the 360

My friend brought over his HD DVD player for the 360 and we hooked it up to my console and watched Transformers in HD through the component cables.. it looked nothing short of amazing and was definitely running in HD, so I know that the component cables can definitely play movies in HD

However, we tried a few regular DVDs and they still looked horrible. I was told that the HD DVD can upconvert regular DVDs, but I definitely don't think the movies looked any different than when I played them through the regular DVD player on the 360

So, does anyone know if you need the HDMI port to upconvert movies? Can the 360 even do it? If I changed the settings on my 360 to 480p just to watch DVDs, would they look any cleaner or better than when I have it set to 720p or 1080i? Can I get upconverted DVDs if I use VGA cables to hook my xbox up to my tv? I'm just hoping someone can help me out here because I think my regular DVDs look worse on my HDTV than on my regular definition TV, and that just doesn't seem right to me

btw, I read plenty of stuff online and I didn't seem to find what I was looking for.. too many things I read conflicted with other things I read

the 360 can upscale, but you have to use VGA cables or have a console w/ HDMI....I'm pretty sure for HD-DVD it has to be hdmi though.
