State schools cost more if you aren't a resident of that state. Assuming you're planning on going to a state school, your parents probably won't be able to pay the ridiculous tuition for you. They might also not want you to be that far away from them. I don't know all the details of your situation, so I could be wrong.

Unless she wants to be an 18 year old who has to figure out how to pay for college by herself, I'd say she should talk to her parents.
Besides...you live in Colorado which is 20x better. Learn to snowboard, drop out of college, become an instructor and spite them.

Exactly. Basically, unless you want to pay for tuition yourself (which is fucking impossible unless you do loans, and then you're just fucked when you get out), you're going to have to go to a school that your parents support. You need to prove to them that it's worth it...examples: really good job placement, strong majors, good staff, etc etc etc. Find out what the school has going for itself and use that to say hey mom, hey dad, look at all the good things associated with this school!

Talk to your parents about it and tell them its your life and you want to do what will make you happy.

haha parents don't give a shit about stuff like that if its going to cost them an arm and a leg...
besides... with that mentality why not let a 12 year old get a tattoo or a 17 year old move out and get married to some person they have known for less than a year of their life? Teenagers often do NOT know what is best for them... Not saying that a choice of college falls into that catagory, but after moving away from your parents and then coming back to them for money.. why should they?
If I were you I would start groveling and appologizing and try to come up with a compromise.

I agree with what you're saying, but some parents are different.
My dad wanted me to go to the Navy, and I didnt want to do that, so I did compromise with him and told him I'd go to the Navy if I didnt get far into what I wanted to do within 2 years. And so far what I want to do is working out perfectly for me.

do all of your parents pay for your college education? jeez. mine aren't going to be paying anything, and neither are the parents of many of my friends.

My mother threatened she wouldn't pay if I didn't stay in california. I was throwing places like cleveland, tampa, and even yorkshire. I'm looking at my options a little more "rationally" now.

Even if they don't seem to care much about what you think, get them too. I know it will cost some but find alternative ways to do so.
My dad is going on and on about how I should stay here (I live in Hawaii) for a year and then go off but I always try to tell him no.
You could tell your parents that you want to go out of state but you will also take under advisement and apply to some in state colleges and look into them later. Your final decision can be made once you get into college.
With my dad I am applying here only so he can leave me alone about it, when in the end I am going to go out of state.
wow. this is exactly what i'm going through. i'm from a pretty wealthy family and my family is trying to make me go to a college i don't want to. i want to go to college in cali so i can pursue a career in the music business which my parents don't support.
do what i'm doing.
if they say no, still go and work to pay off your tuition.

Well, seeing as the UC applications were due two days, I'd say get over it.

i would say that you can move out to california and work for a year to save up money. after you've lived here for a year, you will become a resident. start up school again after that year so you can avoid paying those ridiculous fees.

if you're going to be paying for your education, its most definatly up to you and not your parents.
I've learned in my own experience that in reality, its not so much that your parents don't agree with you, its more so of them simply wanting the best for you.
you'll figure it out, just make sure you don't regret your desicion.
good luck!

I don't know what all you whiny babies are crying about, I paid for my college all myself and only ended with 20k in loans.
There are all kinds of grants out there if you look around. Businesses get kickbacks if they give kids free money for college, so many of them so so.
And if you don't have enough for 4 years, go community college first. No one cares where you do your liberal arts crap, they just care where you graduate from.
Geez, it's not THAT hard. You guys just think it is because you never had to do it. If you have to, you find a way.

Oh, and I paid that 20k in about 2 years after college.

How??? Yeah, I owe about 18K in school loans which is not bad, but seeing as how my life is sucking really hard right now (see other thread), it feels like I owe a million dollars
I don't get your dilemma amenina, why don't your parents want you to come back for college?

I moved back home after college to work and pay off school.
Of course, most people don't want to move back home after college, but really, it isn't the end of the world to work a year or two and pay off debt. It felt soooooo nice to make that final payment.

Yeah I just had this conversation with my step-dad yesterday. It kind of blows they would like me to stay in Jersey because I wrecked my car and now my parents are being sued. I think its more of a venting process though because my mom was bent on cornell and my step-dad really liked Delaware. Right now I either take out loans or end up in some shitty NJ state school.
I hope to god I don't wind up in Rutgers.

Hahah we'll see. I was pretty confident with University of Delaware, but who knows now.
Who doesn't this happen to?
Don't go to a school you don't want to. This is a really important decision that you need to make for yourself, not one your parents make for you. And honstly, even if your parents refuse to pay, I think you should still go where you want.

One argument that would be effective with alot of parents would be to point out how much they hate their own suck-ass jobs and that they need to let you pursue whatever will make you happy so that you don't end up a miserable jerk like them.
