All I can say is what the fuck. Why is this at all necessary? Why is it that Putin always has to play the tough guy? Does he now see how this action is going to affect the security of all other states world-wide?

Your thoughts?

i have to say that Putin doesn't play the tough guy anymore than the US plays the world police. but at least we make actions to try and influence peace (for the mort part).

You have essentially a control freak who remembers once when Russia was a global player and has seen that decline pining for it back.

Sadly this entirely the personality of a leader who is throwing Russia back to its authoratirian ways.

you can describe about half of russia as pining for the old days.
having spent the better part of a year in russia in the mid 90's i'd say alot of what putin has done has been for the good of russia overall. the economic free for all that occurred after the fall of the soviet union lead to unprecedented corruption and a government incapable of taking care of some of it's most basic duties.
i'm not saying everything putin has done since his rise to power has been good, but from what i've heard from those who live there most of his policies have made for a much improved day to day quality of life.

eh. If he is doing things to improve the quality life of the russian people (which im not too sure I agree on that), he is finding ways to do this with the expense and sacrifice of smaller/weaker surrounding countries. I'm ukrainian and just the things I hear from my family are heart breaking. My parents wrote a few political articles regarding putin and his policies for the local paper, so i try to keep up with the current news, but I can't say one positive thing about this man. I don't want to get into detail about this because i have finals to study for. But i can assure you, all of the corrupt, selfish things he has done far exceed the minor improvements that he may have made.

all i know is the russian economy is once again relevant, the basic infrastructure is in much better shape then in the years immediately after the end of the cold war, and the mob doesn't have quite the stanglehold it did on damn near everything during those years to......i won't say one way or another if it's been worth the trade-offs though.
i'm a quarter ukranian myself, and ukraine is totally in the shitter these days except for kiev the entire infrastucture is broken and over run with corruption from top to bottom. i'm not really informed on russia's relationship with the ukraine....but i know the ukraine was in bad shape before putin.

in reference to the original topic i'd like to mention that this move is probably a direct response to the u.s. plans to create a european missle defense shield that putin has been vocally opposing.

nobody's mentioned the United States push for a missile 'defense' shield in Europe.
