Just a quick, teary-eyed introduction to start things off: I have only been a staff member of this site since June, but my involvement here lasts much longer. I owe this site and its members a lot and now that I'm in a position of power (*cringe*), I hope to represent the readers even better in 2008. I can't wait to hear all of your new favorite records and, hopefully, tell y'all about some of mine. I wish you all the best in this holiday season and in the new year. May all of your dreams (musical and otherwise) come true.

Love, Blake

Most Mesmerizing Song of 2008

Moving Mountains - "8105"

Perhaps the most beautiful, lush, emotional 8+ minutes you'll sit through all year. I can't say enough about the imagery, the love story, and the rising, triumphant climaxes. Every part fits into what was, for me at least, the greatest puzzle of the year. What were they saying? What did it all mean? I got my answers; I challenge you to find yours. Get a pair of headphones, dim the lights and live through music for once.

Favorite Singer of 2007

Isaac Brock

I know you don't see this dude's record on the list, but damn if he isn't fantastic (We Were Dead... is still worth checking out). I really fleshed out my MM back catalogue this year and it's amazing how fierce and crazed Brock can get. And seeing him live didn't sway my opinion at all. He killed it, eyes wide and everything. Listen to "Bankrupt On Selling" sometime soon. Or, for something more recent, give "Spitting Venom" a go.

I Was Way Late To The Party:

Archer Avenue - When I Was An Astronaut
The Avett Brothers - The Gleam EP
Neutral Milk Hotel -In An Aeroplane Over The Sea
Beulah - Yoko
This Will Destroy You - Young Mountain EP
Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson - Unnoticeable In A Tiny Town, Invisible In The City
Sick Of It All - Death To Tyrants
Hammock - Kenotic
The Format - Dog Problems
Cave In - Jupiter
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Saves The Day - Stay What You Are

Drowned In Sound

DiS is a great portal into the British music scene. And more important than all that, they use funny slang (like wanker and codswallop). The reviews are usually spot on (though I liked Biffy Clyro wayyy more than them) and they do some really cool features. If you had to visit one other site to get a wordy critic's opinion, go to DiS.

Favorite TV Shows of 2007

30 Rock
Metalacolypse
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
The Mighty Boosh
The Office
The IT Crowd
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Lost (I watched all 3 seasons over the summer /nerd)
Heroes (this almost didn't make the list. Such a sad demise.)

You might see some shows on there that you don't recognize. Those shows come from the great United Kingdom, and, due to the lame studio executives hoarding all the cash, I was forced to look elsewhere for my daily doses of comedy. The strike actually turned out to be a good thing, for me at least. Richard Ayoade is a comic genius (whether he's playing sex fiend Dean Learner or a high Shaman). Noel Fielding has fantastic delivery and his ability to make inane storylines intriguing is a treat to watch (see Old Gregg or the "Charlie" short story). The British do things differently, relying less often on husband/wife/suburban regurgitations and focusing on being innovative with outlandish plots and clever wordplay/culture references. I, for one, appreciate it. I want a job at BBC Three. All that being said, though, 30 Rock still reigns supreme!

I think it was just one of those "right time, right place" sorts of things. I had just gotten to warped tour, was hot and sweaty, and thinking negative thoughts. They were the first band I saw play. They were dressed in crazy jumpsuits, screaming, dancing and having a great time. At first I scoffed, thrust them aside. But I couldn't deny how much fun they looked like they were having. And I thought, "Blake, you jackass, THAT is the band you would be in if you had skillz." And at that point it clicked. So I bought the album and spun it enough to warrant a spot on the list. I def. understand why people can't stand them, but if a situation like that can't help me fall in love with a band, I don't know what will.

Someone in the band is named Crouton. I mean, maybe I should give them a fighting chance. I like salad-related things.

I have to say, i think Cities is my favorite album as well. Couldn't wait for it to drop, couldn't get over it when it did.

While I've primarily been a lurker on this site for a few years, I just wanted to mention how it's good that you not only mention "Career Suicide", but also the best song on it for your list (also happens to be your title I see). Many kudos sir. While I'm sure I haven't listened to as many bands as most people on here this year, from what I have heard, A Wilhelm Scream's album absolutely blew away the competition. It had the same effect as "Our Darkest Days" by Ignite had on me last year.

Whenever In Reverie came out, a dude played me some songs from it. And I hated all of them. So I just kind of wrote the band off as something I didn't like. But this year Adrian made me listen to it and I def. judged too soon, because the album is fantastic.

Thanks for the kind words, best of wishes to you in 08!

Thank you for Moving Mountains, this song blew me away.

Also Blake, I really enjoyed reading all of your reviews during the last half of the year, excellent writting.

I didn't exactly agree with the Fall of Troy placement, just mainly cause Erak still pushed the limits with his playing and vocals, sure it was different, but it was still good. Doppelganger will always be better though, of course :]

I love Moving Mountains...I just think these guys could be even mroe special if they had an ambient kinda of voice, or if they would turn up the vocals just a tad.

Also, like I've said before...

Seconded. Black Books is up there with the great modern British comedies. It stuck to the traditional recipe of shows such as Fawlty Towers and Red Dwarf avoiding the mumbo jumbo we see today like that asshole Little Britain and League of Gentlemen.

I know this is an old thread, but I just happened to be browsing through it and thought i'd share...

Yeah I have to agree with you, Dylan's an amazing comedian. I know it was known as a Brit com, but Moran and the main writer are Irish. They co-wrote the show and brought a different slant to the Brit com genre.

He was asked to do another series but he said he wanted to try different things and to leave on a high point.

You should check out Monster, its his first live DVD. There's another one that was out last year called Like Totally Dylan Moran. It's really good.
