Welcome to my End of the Year list. Cupcakes are on the coffee table. Tell me what you agree with and what you think I'm nuts for listing. I'll tell you how to make a mean pastry, how Baltimore became my city, and why 2007 was one incredible year. Most importantly, I'll tell you that your opinion is the only thing you have in this industry, and if you sell that out, it's not worth anything anymore. Your gut is your daily planner, your keys are your Ouija board, and your ears are the map to whichever destination life takes you.

Best Albums of 2007:
1. Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child (re-released nationally in 2007)*
2. Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre

2008 Predictions:
Under-prepared and fully-aware of the potential damage, the music industry - specifically the major labels - is headed into the mouth of the giant of the beast of the hurricane that won't stop. They say that before you succeed, you must taste the ground first, and that's just where the labels are headed. Business savvy bands will search for traditional record deal substitutes, and a sample platter of new business models will pop up. Some will see success, some will fail miserably.

The Radiohead model will backlash onto other bands that only wish they could succeed like Thom and crew, and ad-supported music technology/social networking communities might be the only model that is providing consistency (even though it does have some flaws). At least two indie labels will go all-digital. Another one or two will fold, and there will be a small rallying cry from surviving, homebody indies to their fans for support.

The RIAA will go into major attack mode, and no one with any evidence of illegal downloading will be safe. All major torrent tracking websites will go down too, which will ignite a small and relatively popular push of underground leaking blogs. Illegal downloading will not go away - nor will it ever, that is unless it is no longer illegal - but it will become harder to procure and more "dangerous." That won't stop anything. Physical music sales won't increase but live music revenue will.

Apple will roll out with something to solidify iTunes as the leading digital music distributor - lossless files, perhaps? Amazon will try to keep up but they won't, even though more people will try to cross over the other side. This may be a stretch, but I'm going to go there anyway - all iTunes music will be DRM-free.

AP.net will grow and grow and grow, and something HUGE will happen in 2008 to push us into heights we never knew we could reach. We will gain traffic rank significantly on Pitchfork Media. Brand New will either call it quits or release another album that is absolutely genius. The Movielife will reunite, and I will finally get the chance to meet Ian MacKaye/see Hey Mercedes. Bamboozle 2008 will be EPIC and in full definition of the word. I'll finally go on tour, in some form or another, and my roommate and I will pick up the pace with our baby, Passed Out Promotions. Life will be good, and I'll graduate college. I'll finish one chapter of that book I've always wanted to write.

2008 is great. Already.

I've seen them once before, at the 930 club, on that crappy Cartel tour. It was an early show, so like only 50 kids were there when Weatherbox took the stage. I'm 100% positive I was the only person there who actually knew who they were. Oh well, still sang along to every song. Too bad they are in CA and don't tour much on the east coast.

YES. Someone read my mind and put up Annuals. I discovered them this past summer and was simply floored. I love that band dearly. The fact that I discovered them this year means they're sort of a 2007 band for me, so its really not cheating in my eyes anyway.

And RIP Piebald. A truly fun band.

Same here, I saw them at Sonar. The crowd looked so lost and unknowning during their set, and there I was, all excited because they were finally on the East Coast and I could sing every word, haha. Why did it have to be Cartel?? I could think of so many more bands that they could open for that would yield a much more appreciative crowd.

If they do indeed break up,

I will blame it all on, my personal hero, Jesse Lacey.

He will destroy that band if he keeps getting trashed everynight. The rest of the band doesn't know what to do, and have given up somewhat. After the last show I saw them at, I was hangin' out with the guys, and Jesse ran out of the bus with a full bottle of JD, Vin turns to me and Brian and says "I don't even wanna touch that anymore." I believe he was reffering to Jesse, not the bottle. I think the drinking is a bigger problem then anyone realizes.
