So we all know what the majority of people want: world peace. yeah, it would be nice to go one day without hearing about a bomb in the middle east killing 15 school children, but we all know that it's not gonna happen anytime soon.

also, people wish to go back in time and stop some horrorable event like slavery or the holocaust. both horrorable times in the history of mankind, but if you think about, really think about it...the world would be totally diffrent if these two things never happened. what would have happened if europeans never went to africa, if Adolf got into art school? sure, millions of lives would be spared, but just as many lives would have never been. would Martin Luther king Jr been born? would Anne Frank bocome some brillant writer that would changed how we think? would someother race would be inslaved inplace of the africans? would someother dictater have done something so much worse than the third reich? in a way, I'm kinda glad things happened the way they did. we haved learned so much from it, but everyone I tell this to tells me I'm worng...

these are the things that keep me up at night. Am I some sort of sick freak or something?

no, you're not a freak, just curious, who isn't?

Your logic is the same as people who go "I've done a lot of fucked up things, but they made me who I am so..."

So what? They could have been who they are, maybe even better, without the fucked up things.

I'm sure SOMEHOW mankind would have survived without the Diary of Anne Frank if we didn't have the Holocaust, or Martin Luther King Jr if there were no slavery. They don't exactly equal each other out in my eyes.

what I ment was those are two of the most horrific examples of what humans are capble of. it takes some sick logic to think that someone who's diffrent than you is worth less than a animal, and it takes a REEEEAAAALLLLLLYYYYYYY sick and twisted logic to even think of doing what the nazis did. both were worng, but had somehow shaped the world of the better. but with out these two events, what would have become of the world? so yeah, on some levels, they are equal.

They shaped the world FOR the better? I highly, highly doubt that. Especially to all the millions dead, for them the world was most definitely shaped for the worst.

You can find a silver lining in anything, really, but I think we would have been much better off without slavery or the Holocaust.

In fact, I'd say a good deal of our crime can be indirectly linked to our slavery legacy. Had we treated Africans as equals they may not have been dropped into such poverty from the start, and poverty = huge reason for crime.

You're just getting excited about the history class you're taking right now. Let it go.

I agree with popdisaster. The world would still be the same because all of it was bound to happen anyway. Stop worrying about it.

The past is the past. If you want something to change, change the future. Ya know?

Exactly. There's no point in bitching about the past. It isn't going to change a thing.

Thank you. So many people need to realize this.

It was all bound to happen? Says who?

We do fall into cycles, over and over, but we can still make a difference on a micro level. Which is really all that matters, in the end, the macro is just a combination of many micros.

This is fucking retarded. What person wouldn't have given up MLK for slavery to have never happened? What person wouldn't give up AF's diary to keep the Holocaust from happening?

We haven't learned that much. There are still acts of genocide happening, we just ignore them for the most part because they aren't on as grand a scale as the Holocaust. What do you think th big hubub about Darfur is about? And Kosovo?

Even if I wish it never happened. If we stopped Hitler, someone else would have gotten the idea (not necessarily about Jews but the same idea) same with slavery it would happen eventually. Humans needs to feel superior and one way to do that is to make one race less worth...

NO! NO! NO! NOT WHAT I MENT AT All!

I use those two pieces of history and those two people as examples! think about it, and not just about the bad shit! think about the good that came from these things. without Martin Luther king jr, there would most likely be no civil rights in America (and as odd as it sounds, other countries actually look at us and use our history to bring change to their own homelands). without the holocaust, we would have never really looked at the world around us and tried to change it (although ww2 involvement was for Pearl Harbor, when we found out about what was happing in Germany, that was a wake up call for everyone) because we don’t want something that was that horrific to ever happen again, we treat humanitarian issues a lot different now than we would have in it never happened. yes, history repeats itself, but rarely in those areas now.

the whole point of this was to et out all my frustration that builds up when I get into it at school, home, and work over this. NO, I’m not a friend of slavery. and NO WAY in hell do I support in anyway, shape, or form what the third Reich did. all I want people to do is at least try to see the good that comes out of tragedy.

((and on another, more annoying note. my other posts were made with a piece of shit keyboard and with a computer with no spell-check. you think you were annoyed with the spelling errors, imagine how I felt..))

and with that, I bid this thread adieu.

Well that is a weak and defeatist way of looking at history.

I'm pretty sure that without Hitler we would NOT have had any sort of major European Holocaust.

Whether we have another one in the future or not is unsure, but I really doubt Hitler coming around somehow stopped this supposed future Holocaust from happening.
