that tells ya, lots of dumb people with money to blow and nowhere to go...
you saw it?
Definitely not better than any of his previous movies by a fucking long shot. Completely disappointing actually. Wasn't even interesting. No details. No characters worth mentioning with the exception of the old lady. Mark Wahlberg was a giant pussy in this movie, who didn't pull it off. The acting was pretty awful, and it was not exciting to watch. Bad movie. Maybe if you don't want to die because of plants, you shouldn't stand in a field for an entire day.

Haha, I really can't stop thinking about this movie and how many problems it had.
None of the characters had any chemistry, nor were any of their relationships believable. I still can't make sense of the part where the two kids get blown away by the shotgun (lol @ Whalberg telling the one kid everything was going to be okay after his brains were splattered everywhere). What really gets me, though, is Whalberg figured out everything without any proof or evidence. One man mentions a theory to him and he runs with it. Then later on he figures out what's causing the theory to occur and once again, without any proof or evidence, it just is because he says so. Ugh.

So, they were not entirely convinced that plants had anything to do with the deaths; but they knew that the four directions that the road was leading all led to were people had been infected and started killing themselves...
So what were they supposed to do? Sit there and wait to die? Or try to escape off road through the field?

The only thing that is truly entertaining (aside from two scenes I enjoyed) about this film is the horrible dialogue and acting. I don't think many people have qualms about the plot (I'm sure some do, especially those expecting every M. Night movie to be a supernatural thriller), but the way it was executed. For example, he could've gone for the same story, but not insult the audience by having eerie music played while he shoots trees and blades of grass in the wind. As I've said a couple times in this thread, I think this had potential and I can see what was attempted with the idea, but the thing as a whole was a swing and a miss.
i will agree with all of that.
i guess i liked it alot more because i had very low expectations when i walked into the theater.
somewhere between the goofy dialogue/bad acting/and its exceptionably poor plot i found pure entertainment being delivered.
for the first half of the movie i was trying to feel creeped out.
then at the hot dog scene it started getting ridiculous and i accepted that.
but i think the tv segment at the end followed by the last scene was a perfect ending.
i liked how the story ended for zooey and mark.
and come on people, spencer breslin was shot in the chest by a shotgun

I went into it with high expectations and I hated it.
Did anyone notice the mic in at least 3 scenes? Drove me freaking crazy! If the Cinematographer doesn't catch that the editor really needs to crop it out or choose a different take. That was ridiculous.

Most all boom mics can be seen on prints in theatres, you just don't see it because the movie is framed right. Thats a projectionist's fault.

im sick of reading negative reviews for this movie.
its a very entertaining movie.
remember folks, its SCI-FI
that means, it doesnt have to make sense.
you just have to accept what the director is going for and like it or not.
if you cant get any enjoyment out of this movie, you are as lame as a killer plant
if you want ACTUAL killer plants, go watch the Ruins.
i give the Happening a 7.8/10
i think shyamalan did a good job. i rate this even with signs and the village
i thought it was better than unbreakable.
wat
aren't some their reactions to people dying like "oh good golly!" or something. my friend said it was bad. i want to see it now just to see how terrible it is.
Haha, I believe you are referring to the moment when Marky Mark is speaking with a soldier about what's (ugh) happening and the soldier says out loud, "cheese and crackers!"
Truly a lol worthy moment. I think that line wandered off the Juno set and somehow found its way here.
Somebody spoil some of the parts that made it good/bad. I probably won't see it until DVD and I could care less if it's spoiled for me since everybody says it sucks.
Okay, other than the previously mentioned cheese and crackers bit, I think some of the good/bad moments for me were:
Random moments of stating the obvious. Someone threw out the line already where Marky Mark is clearly standing in front of a house and he yells out, "There's a house over there!" but my personal favorite had to be the moment when they're looking for a ride and a car pulls right up to them and Zooey Deschanel's character says, "there's a car."
I wish I had noticed that for sale sign that says, "you deserve this!" lol
Someone in my theatre laughed hysterically every time someone died.
Someone in my theatre yelled out during the opening credits, "This isn't Sex and the City?"
The millions of times the word (or various forms of the word) "happening" was used. Seriously, there was one moment where Wahlberg used the word twice in one sentence and I almost lost it.
The hot dogs bit with the dude from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Always thought that guy had horse face.
Wahlberg talking to a plastic plant, basically begging it to spare him as he's just "trying to be positive." "I'm talking to a plastic plant. ......I'm still doing it."
Yes, there are numerous shots of trees and rustling grass that Shyama-lama-ding-dong uses to create a "menacing" effect and I think it produced the opposite effect from the audience of what he was aiming for.
Marky Mark's magical mood ring.
The two kids getting shot and the slow-mo shot of Wahlberg as he yells "Noooooooooooo!!!"
The creepy old lady and her insistence that Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch are trying to rob and/or murder her in her sleep. Wahlberg's reaction to her accusations were hilariously bad.
Mrs. Jones: "You're going to murder me in my sleep."
Marky Mark: "WHAT?!?!? NOOOO!!!"
The awful dialogue/script coupled with the equally bad acting. A few of my favorite instances?
1.) The opening sequence in which hairpin girl kills herself with a (can you guess?) hairpin. Right before she does the deed, her friend is watching something (OMG) happening in the distance and she begins to narrate the events to her friend.
*Someone screams*
"Did you hear that? Someone just screamed. It scared me. What are those people doing over there? It looks like they're clawing themselves. Is that blood?"
*turning back to her friend, hairpin girl*
"Erin? Erin?"
*Hairpin girl pulls out aforementioned hairpin*
"Erin?"
*Hairpin girl stabs herself in the neck with hairpin*
".....Erin?"
2.) Wahlberg in his classroom with his students. The first of two instances that are bad is when he begins to pick on one of his male students for not caring about what happened to the disappearing honeybees. He deftly tells the boy that while he may currently skate by on good looks, according to nature, in about ten years he'll be just another fuggo. Sexual harassment? Nah, the kid doesn't seem to mind, especially when Marky Mark tells him he was just kidding and he'll always be a stud. Cue thumbs up to teacher from stud. Next moment of silly awfulness is when the assistant principal shows up in his classroom and Wahlberg crouches down as he slinks through the classroom and makes considerable use of his jazz hands as he states out loud, "oh noooo, it's the dark lord! Don't look her in the eyes!" Then he shuts off the classroom lights and stands against the wall pretending to hide from the evil assistant principal. Assistant principal flicks the lights back on and is not amused. Neither are we.
3.) Zooey Deschanel being all jittery with her phone. I felt like she came across as a twelve year old child through a lot of this movie. Then again, that's how most of this movie felt...
4.) The hilarious sudden switches in character during select scenes. One being when creepy old Mrs. Jones asks Mark and Zooey who is chasing who? Mark raises his hand and smiles as Mrs. Jones quietly chuckles and says, "I thought so," before slapping the little girl (Jess) next to her who is reaching for a roll or something. The next is when Wahlberg, Deschanel, and little girl are hiding out from the evil wind in separate rooms. They are communicating to each other through a wall and at one point Deschanel says "this is the end isn't it?" As we sit and think, "god I hope so," Wahlberg replies, "yeah." Suddenly the scene cuts back to Deschanel's side of the wall and you can only hear Wahlberg's voice as he says (in that obnoxious upward pitch that makes everything he says sound like a question) "remember our first date?"
5.) An unintentionally hilarious scene wherein the Funky Bunch are all together in a field and they decide to split off into two separate groups. The group with the cheese and crackers soldier and the Dr. Quinn guy with the horse face suddenly come down with the moonwalk disease and begin their backwards march into hysteria while Marky Mark is on the other side of the hill with his group trying to decide what to do. As Wahlberg attempts to use the scientific method to decide what to do next, shots from a gun are being fired off on the other side of the hill from the group that's gone crazy bananas. The dialogue (loosely based) is somewhat as follows:
Marky Mark: Okay, so first step; ask a question
Killer Tree Group: BANG
Funky Bunch: Uhhh......Mark
Marky Mark: Step two; Do background research
KTG: BANG
Funky Bunch: Hey Mark...
KTG: BANG
Marky Mark: Construct a hypothesis...
KTG: BANG
Funky Bunch: You've got to be kidding me...
KTG: BANG
6.) Another amusing scene meant to be taken seriously is when a lady in the group calls her daughter on a phone to see if she's okay. Since the disease makes your speech all nonsensical (metaphor for the script?) the lady's daughter (Stacy) starts wigging out over the phone and as Stacy is placed on speaker phone, all you can hear is:
"Calculus.....I understand calculus....Calculus....Calculus... Calc-"
*what sounds like the smashing of a window and subsequent leap to death or something (honestly, who cares at this point?)*
Then Stacy's mom (remember that song?) starts flipping out and Marky Mark grabs the phone from her, holds it up to his ear and proclaims "All I can hear is wind," before walking away nonchalantly like Horatio Caine from CSI: Miami. Incredible.
That's all I can think of for now...

I don't understand how people can say that Wahlberg's acting in this movie is terrible. Based on his performances in previous movies, I think we have seen that he is a pretty respectable actor. I think he was trying to play a fairly mellow, low-key science teacher who's obviously not ready to be a hero. I can understand why this film frustrated people, mostly because of the ending but I don't think we should hate it because of the acting, especially when the other characters use similar, odd acting styles. Maybe Shyamalan was going for a specific style and mood for this movie, and the acting styles were used to set that mood. I don't think we should hate the movie because the style is something we're not used too. I think before everyone rights this off as a horrible movie, they should give some thought as to why the director did things the way he did.

so now we have to ponder over why a director made a horrible film before we hate it for being horrible?
and the first two lines of your post make no sense. yes, he's shown he's a pretty respectable actor, but he was terrible in this movie. i think that's why people are so upset. he's not a terrible actor, so for him to be as terrible as he is in this warrants being upset. i haven't seen anybody criticize his career or reputation as an actor, just clearly state that he was horrible in this.

Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel's characters survive along with the little girl Jess who is the daughter of their friends. Unfortunately, the little girls parents both died in "The Happening" and apparently she's got no family whatsoever because she ends up living with Marky Mark and his gal. As for the rest of the world, well we're just so darn ignorant and therefore refuse to believe that this was plants trying to send us a warning. A scientist on TV does his darndest to get the news guy to believe him but wouldn't you know it, the news guy simply insists that since this was a isolated incident in the northeast there's simply no way this proves it was plants releasing a toxin. Cue ominous final shot of the film which mirrors the opening scene except this time it's in another country. A guy walks and talks with his friend as they stroll through a park as suddenly a scream is heard in the distance and the man's friend freezes in his tracks and begins to repeat himself nonsensically. The wind blows as the gloomy clouds move in and the credits begin to roll while Shyamalan shakes his head and wags his finger at us. He hopes you've learned your lesson. So do I.
Now, that's actually a little better than the original ending from the original script if you can believe me. What was the original ending?
Well, faced with the reality of the situation, the two main leads decide to reconcile their relationship and walk outside together to stand and face the wind because they realize (due to no rhyme or reason mind you) that the solution, the cure that will stop the virus, is.......being positive. Yes, see the plants in the original script fed off of negative energy so if you were a fairly negative person, well, kiss your sorry ass goodbye. If you stayed positive though, you were certain to be a happy camper. Just don't get all down in the dumps when grandpa dies I guess.

Just as Mark Wahlberg is about to go outside face the big scary plants and trees in order to be with his wife, the "happening" stops happening, for no reason at all, they just don't kill themselves. Then the "happening" starts happening in Paris. Oh and Marks wife all of a sudden is pregnant, which has absolutely nothing to do with the plot at all.
Here is a riddle: If I gave you a penny the first time a variation of the word "happening" was said in this movie and doubled it each additional time it was said throughout the movie, how much money would you have by the end of this movie?

marky mark is a good actor only in certain movies. mainly the crime drama ones. but no one mentioned the acting in boogey nights...FAAAR worse than this movie. although boogie nights was kind of a comedy, the acting was justified. In this case, who knows why it was bad, yea there was a horrible script, but he could have "acted" better saying such stupid things. i agree that marky mark's sudden rationalization about what was going on was pretty stupid, but i guess thats as clever as Night is when it comes to letting the audience know the plot of the movie.
if this movie had more of a "weird" tone to it i guess it could have been better or maybe even a twist ending. i thought of a good twist that would have made this movie better...
What if after Marky Mark and his wife face the wind together, the wind hits them...screen goes black...flash back to on board the train...MARKY MARK WAS HAVING A NIGHTMARE!! He realizes that the environment is being poorly treated by humans and becomes the biggest pro-nature public speaker in the country and slowly helps rebuild the ozone....the movie ends with Marky Mark speaking at a podium at a random press conference on how he plans on changing things...cut to a close up of him giving a cheesy smile...roll credits...

I haven't enjoyed any of his movies since Signs, but I honestly do not understand how anyone could not say this is his worst movie. One of the biggest pieces of illogical bullshit I have ever seen.
Atrocious acting, hackneyed dialogue, piss-poor thematic material ... this felt like it was made by a cocky grad student who dropped out because he thought he already knew all there was to know.

Hahaha I love it - this movie sucks so hard, it gets people incredibly upset. I know one person who has enjoyed all of his films, too ... and he actually liked this movie.
Needless to say, I think he's brain damaged. Thank God I'm not friends with him, because he is an idiot.
I saw it with my girlfriend and I thought it was the absolute worst excuse of a film ever. It's so bad that I'm making all of my friends go see it. I don't like the fact that we're feeding the movie "success", but I need all my friends to see it first hand on how bad it truly is. I've got like 6 of them so pumped to see it hahah

Got to see it today and it is pretty bad. Shyamalan's worst movie. There were so many things that I happened where I would just look over at my friend and smile. I laughed a lot as well and not at any of the intended funny parts.
The slow-motion part made me laugh pretty hard. And when he was talking to his wife through the pipe, I half expected him to crawl into it to get to her. Still, there are certain things that worked and there were hints that it was a Shyamalan film, but it was buried beneath terrible acting and bad storytelling.

Anyone else thing this is a joke from M. Night? I mean ... seriously?
CNN: So a lot of people are going to see this and say, "Is this an environment movie?" Are you sending an Al Gore-like message out here, or is it just a thriller?
Shyamalan: No. 1, it's a B movie. This is the best B movie you will ever see, that's it. That's what this is. If there's other things that stick to your ribs as you walk out, that's great, but it's supposed to be, you know, zombies eating flesh.
CNN: So when you say B, you don't mean honeybee?
Shyamalan: No, I meant like, you know, zombies and killer things running around.

Kind of makes it harder to believe, but I wouldn't put it past him; I mean, he has made a ghost, superhero and fairy tale movie. I really hope its sincere because then I'd possibly have a different view of this film.
I would have really liked to see the "separation scene" played out a lot more. It would have been great if you could have seen them deteriorate alone in the separate rooms and then something happen after that.
The concept was good and there were cool sequences, but it overall lacked in execution.
Plus Shyamalan's signature technique of using long sequences with very few cuts wasn't present in this movie at all. That's one of my favorite techniques of film, so that really bummed me out.

if the happening were music, it would be tha carter 3. you look at who made it and say, "man, this is gonna be awesome!" then, you find out there are so many things wrong with it, it might literally be the worst thing you've ever paid for. then, after a while, its awfulness becomes enjoyable. then, you start to realize that its awfulness is actually funny...really funny. before too long you're so far past how horrendous it is that you can't wait to see what he comes out with next.

Yeah, that it sucks.
I don't see how any of those scenes you mention "make" the movie. Yes, they make it bad, that's for sure. Everything is simply there without any purpose - Shyamalan is not Hitchcock, nor will he ever be. This is a guy who wrote in a meaningless part of the film simply so he could put his name on the cast list. He wants to be Alfred Hitchcock and comes across looking like a pretentious dick.
There is simply nothing about this film that is redeeming. Compared to his first three suspense hits, this movie lacks so much in everything - it's rushed, the script is poorly written, the acting is insulting and there is no logic used in this movie. I do not understand how you can defend it so much.

I honestly think that by explaining the living shit about it, they ruined it.
In 20 years, I hope someone with half the budget and twice the talent makes something with the genuinely cool premise (people everywhere start killing themselves), but don't offer an explanation. Like the Radiohead video for 'Just', its such a disarming scene purely because you have no reason why it is happeneing...not a bunch of fucking trees.
I think its funny how they keep ramming home how nobody will ever know what really happened, then proceed to completely explain exactly what happened.

The only part that freaked me out was when that old lady was hiding in her room and she just starts screaming at Wahlberg. That reminded me of The Sixth Sense when the woman, who had cut her wrists, comes to Osment and starts going ape.

NEW POST: So I see a couple people online have had this problem... as far as the movie goes:
Scene after scene, as a fresh film school student, I kept feeling how M. Night ruined it. It was a great idea for a movie, and in the hands of a skilled director (not to mention screenwriter), this movie would have been a classic. The dialog was just laughably bad. Almost like it was daring you to laugh at it. People think that the old style of movies he was basing The Happening from (ala The Birds) have bad dialog, probably because of parody, but they don't. A hitchcock film never stands out as having laughably bad dialog, imo.

I thought this was maybe M Nights best movie. I rated it for our school newspaper and gave it a B+. Our paper ended up getting the most feedback in it's entire history. Most of them asking for my head and to be fired.

I think if the entire universe got together and watched it, we would all be at peace for the rest of our lives. It's that type of film.

So how many Oscars do you think this will win? I mean it's a given that it will win best picture, but I think Mark Whalberg will put out best actor. He put his heart and soul into this movie.

Forget "The Beatles," Shyamalan needs to broadcast this into space. You really want to be visited by intelligent life from other planets and/or solar systems? This ought to peak some interest.

I'm thinking at least 4. Best screenplay definitely and they'd be crazy not to nominate Shyamalan for best director. I mean they guy practically has it in the bag at this point. Clearly.

I know I was menaced. Grass fucking owned. All wavy and shit. Couldn't mow my lawn for like a week.

Damn! Pwnt! Perhaps we can inform them that that was simply part of an elaborate children's story involving grass monkeys and some giant, magical eagle which, thanks to Paul Giamatti, has found a successful conclusion and thus the aliens are free to roam the earth and kidnap our families.

Same here. I never got to see it in theaters so when I finally rented it, I was so glad I did because I watched it again the next day and then again the day after that. Later I received it as a gift for my birthday. It's probably one of my favorite movies actually. I even view it as one of the best superhero movies ever made if you want to put it in that genre. Knowing that I feel that way about a Shyamalan movie does still give me hope and reminds me that maybe some day I'll be pleasantly surprised again.
Seriously though, I have friends who don't like Unbreakable and we get into arguments over it. They make me angry.

I don't understand why a company would buy a movie like S.I.C.K. when there are plenty of great scripts that need to be made as well as films that need distributors. Makes no sense.
S.I.C.K. looks pretty amazing though. Ha.

I was such a huge fan of [Amy Adams]. We’d actually had the luxury of having lunch before to talk about another movie, and it was a bad movie that I did. She dodged the bullet. I don’t want to tell you what movie… All right, The Happening with M. Night Shyamalan. It is was it is. F*cking trees, man, the plants. F*ck it. You can’t blame me for wanting to try to play a science teacher. You know? I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook.

Still the worst movie I've ever seen, tied with The Blair Witch Project 2 and The Fog.
