Here is the poster for the new Shyamalan film, "The Happening". It has Mark Wahlberg in it.
Looks decent but the tag-line is so similar to "Signs", which was 'It's Happening'...
Let's see if Shyamalan can rebound after his last two films which people pretty much hated. I liked "The Village" a lot and "Lady in the Water" was enjoyable as well. This should be a big departure from his earlier work.

The Village was ok. Premise was good, but Shyamalan didn't portray it as well as he should have.
Also, how in the hell did you enjoy Lady in the Water? That was one of the worst movies I have ever seen and I honestly cannot see how someone could have liked it.

I wanna say it didn't. Keep in mind I didn't ACTUALLY read the script, just a review of it. I'm pretty sure they said that it was kind of like a straight-up movie, without a huge reveal at the end. But, if you know the exact premise, then maybe you could expect to feel resolved at the conclusion of it.

Dreyfuss was great. I'm surprised he hasn't been cast in a role on a Spielberg movie more recently. He was great in Jaws as well.
It's so hard for me to pick a favorite, but I might have to go with Minority Report. I'd say the best work he's done is Schindler's List with Saving Private Ryan following behind in a close 2nd, but they aren't my favorite.
I really like AI. The cinematography in that movie is just so unbelievable and I LOVE one of the last scenes when he is talking with the alien. Munich is also great. I bought that movie used and need to pop in again.
I can't wait to see how he does with Lincoln and Interstellar.

Yeah, Schindler's List is his best film and SPR is just as good, but I wouldn't consider them my favorites either. I think the scene in Ryan where Damon tells the stories of the last time he spent with his brothers and he asks Hanks' character to tell the story of his wife and her rose garden, but he declines, is one of the best things Spielberg has ever done.
Minority Report is up there though too. I could watch that film any day.
I think his worst film is The Lost World. What happened with that one? Ha.
We need to just make a Spielberg thread.
Lady in the Water was probably one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen. Even after that trash though I'll still check out this. I have to have faith in Night. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs are all too good for me to write him off completely.

i always tried to figure out what he meant by doing that. whats your interpretation? something like in road to perdition? in the end where hanks is shot in the beautiful house on the beach and the red blood that smeers on the wall somehow hampers the beauty in it. in relation to hanks' not telling the story about his wife cause he'd feel it wouldn't be right telling such a beautiful story in a such an ugly place?

I think it's just one of the memories that is so beautiful, he feels he is the only one that deserves that knowledge because that is a big piece of his relationship to his wife. That memory connects him to her in a way that no one else is able to and he finds solace in that memory in the horrors of the war.

I enjoyed The Village - only because it had a similar plot to a book I read when I was a kid - so I thought that was pretty cool. But yeah I can understand why people don't like it - I mean - it was some mentally retarded kid running around in the woods - how silly is that?

i'm guessing from what i've heard some environmental crisis?
It's plants. Angry with mankind's tendency to destroy the environment, plants strike back and they release deadly toxins in the wind that, when taken in, make you want to kill yourself. Insert joke here.
There is no twist ending (at least not in the version released online). In the script, there's actual written scenes where people are running from the wind. Yes. So there you have it. That's the movie. Plants get mad, the day gets windy, people die.
Also Marky Mark dances to Good Vibrations in the end credits.

I also thought Unbreakable was great. I enjoyed it more than The Sixth Sense although I still appreciate The Sixth Sense for what it was. Unbreakable was underrated though. It didn't get enough advertisement and it was released in November as opposed to his other films which have all been released in the summer with lots of hype. I realize Unbreakable came out right after The Sixth Sense so perhaps the studios didn't want to jump the gun and promote him like crazy after one film, but they really should have taken that chance. Unbreakable was worth it.
On a side note, has anyone ever seen his films before The Sixth Sense? I saw Wide Awake when I was in junior high and his filmmaking style definitely changed from that to The Sixth Sense. I've never seen Praying With Anger though.
M. Night should try making a comedy for a change instead of taking himself so seriously to the point where it becomes laughable. Signs was proof he had a funny bone.

If you head on over to Yahoo! Movies (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809921595/video/7827805) you can check out an extended clip from M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/film/1611), which hits theaters from 20th Century Fox on July 13. The pic, which will mark Shyamalan's first R-rated effort, follows a couple who go on the run from an apocalyptic crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.

Early review talking about Wahlberg.
"The most obvious fault in "The Happening" is the acting -- in particular Wahlberg's performance. I'm saying this with no hyperbole, but Wahlberg might very well give the worst performance I've ever seen in anything. He's that bad. His character is a passive aggressive high-school teacher and each line in delivered with nasally whines that sound like some strange parody. As bad as the rest of the movie is, Wahlberg is the part that the internet is going to eat alive. But is it really his fault? Wahlberg's proven himself with "I (Heart) Huckabees" and his amazing turn in "The Departed". I can't help but feel that Shyamalan -- intentionally or otherwise -- is ultimately to blame for forcing some truly awful line readings."

Hahaha, wow...I just read the review that came from and I think this is the best part:
It's plants that are responsible. They've decided to wipe out humanity and release the neuro-toxin as their natural weapon. This was far, far more clear in the script (and even the title "The Green Effect") and I'm really of the opinion that it's a pretty neat idea, though. What Shyamalan quickly finds, though, is that it's very, very hard to menacingly cut to an evil-looking tree. That doesn't stop him from trying, though, and he inexplicably adds wind as a way of livening up the scenes. When the leaves of a tree start to blow, evil's afoot. It's really, really hard not to laugh at and there's even a real groaner of a gag-scene wherein Wahlberg timidly apologizes to a houseplant only to find that it's made of rubber. Really.

I understand what you were saying, its just that when most people complain about his movies they are usually way off the point of the movie or don't actually have sound reasoning for disliking. Which is different than most movies, because his movies seem to get much more of a harsh reaction than any other films nowadays. It just strikes me odd how much hate comes towards someone who tries so hard to do something different each time out and gets ripped on so much for doing so. While I sit here and read about people getting excited for Fast and the Furious 4 or The Transporter 3.

The only reason I'd like to see The Happening is to play 'Where's M. Night?'

I honestly don't see how anyone could have enjoyed The Village. That movie was average and then by the time it reached the climax, it was just downright terrible.
Didn't even bother seeing Lady In The Water, even though Giamatti is a great actor.

WHAT made it average? And downright terrible at the end? The acting was great. A large troupe of stage actors that all played their roles very, very well combined with a great love story, beautiful cinematography and one of the best scores in recent memory.
I think what people SHOULD be angry about when it comes to this movie is the ADVERTISING, which of course, M. Night has nothing to do with. They advertised this movie wrong and because of that mistake, people hated it. The movie is a love story. Plain and simple. A testament to how far one would go for someone they love. It is cleverly disguised as a moster movie, because thats what Night does. He makes movies about subjects in different styles and genres so that they are fresh and different than the other crap that comes out. If you sit down, and say, "alright, let me watch this movie for what it IS and not what I WANT it to be its honestly one of his better films.
I have a bad feeling about this one

M. Night might be getting "worse and worse" but he is doing more with his life than the people complaining about his work ever will.
People criticize not because they are jealous and want his life and career. Well maybe some do, but definitely not all people. You're making a very general statement. I think most people criticize because they think he's bad at his job. If you know someone is bad at their job you usually tell them. Since this guy's in Hollywood and people don't know him, they turn to internet message boards devoted to music and bash him there instead. I am one of those individuals. I enjoyed The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. I even liked Signs a little. I did not like the rest. I do not think we should throw generalized accusations pertaining to the lives of the greater whole that make up the internet because the internet, as we know, is serious business.

Yeah I've heard his performance is just terrible, I felt like it was a very strange casting choice anyway.
O and same to you. I've just started reading The Road, but I'm already blown away by the imagery McCarthy is able to create.

i'll give you some of my insight. i liked the village, but was still a bit dissapointed. while the ending i felt was creative and interesting, it was also a bit hard to swallow, given the plausibility of such an elaborate ploy. the monster element was tedious and forced(as well as a total wash) and the hokey 'early settler' dialogue made for a movie that seemed destined for dissapointment. Especially because there were so many things to love. Howard was brilliant. the cinematography was incredible. Shymalan is extremely gifted and created some really great suspense (and that stabbing scene was amazingly executed)

As for Lady In the Water this movie was a mess on so many levels. it had flashes of brilliance, and Giamitti was good in what was ultimately a joke of a role.
the whole film felt like a story that had absolutely NO DIRECTION. like he was making it up as it went along. it just got more and more tedious, as the rules of the fairy tale world started multiplying and adjusting to incorporate every tenant at the apartment. almost like a bedtime story he told his kids...oh wait it was! kudos for imagination, but that doesn't make it a great movie.

Lady In the Water had so much potential on the page. It really did. Honestly though, it is the weakest of his films by far, but if making something like that is my biggest flaw, then I would be ok with it.

If i were stuck in a cell with just a DVD player, and i could only choose between Lady In the Water and Cool As Ice, i would watch Vanilla kung fu mob hitmen any day of the week, because it's entertaining-ly bad. I felt like I was working, watching Lady In the Water.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, so I'm glad you have such a strong one about how much you love M. Night, which I think can be a creative director/writer, he sometimes just thinks his ideas are better than they wind up being.
I find the Village's plot to be boring and half-hearted. Mysterious things in the woods doesn't grab me - I felt like a majority of horror films have used that device before and despite a fairly-good cast, it never helped pull me into the film. Personal preference I suppose. Second, the twists didn't add anything to my idea of the story. Okay, so it takes place in the present - big deal. Okay, so the retarded kid is the creature - that is just stupid.
I honestly found nothing about that movie even remotely interesting - it wasted a good cast, in my opinion. Shyamalan needs to move past his big reveal phase and focus on keeping our suspense going and not have it drop off at the end.

Understandable, but I think what I was trying to get at was the fact that it isn't even a horror movie. That was my whole point. Just like Signs isn't a sci-fi movie. It is a drama about faith a religion told through the guise of a sci-fi movie. I feel the studios really screw him over with the way THEY choose to market the films and advertise them. And I feel its REALLY going to hurt the Happening.
People are no doubt going to be mad about the "TWIST" in the Happening, when it wasn't even supposed to have one. The script has no twist and the original title of the film even told the audience what it was about and what was causing the events. But no, the studio comes in and goes, "You're M. Night. There has to be a twist. We're gonna change the name and withhold information from the trailers so that it seems to have a big twist when it comes out in theatres". Which, in no way, is what Night intended to do with this new film.

Yeah, I see your point man. The studios like the fact he is known for "twists" and they manipulate that facet of his work. I think that will definitely be the biggest downfall to this film.

"The most obvious fault in "The Happening" is the acting -- in particular Wahlberg's performance. I'm saying this with no hyperbole, but Wahlberg might very well give the worst performance I've ever seen in anything."

Hahaha, my girlfriend and I were watching Lost the other night and we saw that same preview. She turned to me and said, "it's like the studio is saying, "look, we took the training wheels off of his bicycle! We're so proud.""
I don't get it. Lots of people make R rated movies....but because it's Shyamalan this means that we're supposed to care more? Does the R rating change under his guidance or something?
