I watched Gangs of New York the other day and although not my favorite Scorcese movie, Daniel Day Lewis playing William Cutting i.e. Bill the Butcher is one of the best characters on screen of the past 20 years.

I may be wrong, but I heard DDL rarely broke character off camera, which is pretty badass if it's true.

Gangs of New York is my favorite Scorsese picture, believe it or not.

Love DiCaprio and Day-Lewis in it. Great movie.

he does that for most of his roles. when he played christy brown in my left foot, he had people wheel him around on a wheelchair off camera. he broke a few ribs doing that.

he's such a fantastic actor.

I think he killed a couple people on set during the shoot of Gangs of New York as well.

Scorcese actually found a play that enunciates the accent that New Yorkers had back in those times. Apparently Lewis read it like it was his bible and that's how he managed to get the accent in that film.

DDL's Bill the Butcher is one of the most captivating performances I've seen.
