...are kind of stupid.

Jodie Foster for best actress in The Brave One? Did anyone see that movie? I thought it was awful, maybe I'm wrong.

The fact that American Gangster got Best Actor, Picture, and Director is something I wholeheartedly disagree with, but oh well. At least No Country got plenty of nominations.

Oh, and wheres Tommy Lee Jones?

No you're right, it was awful, as was Across The Universe. Giving ATU a nomination over Once was awful, as was Once getting no nominations at all.

But Pushing Daisies - 3 nominations! Huzzah!

American Gangster was more or less the only mainstream release that was nominated. I'm not really upset about any of the nominations.

Once got robbed by Across the Universe?! that's not even right.

I heard there might be a Golden Globes this year because of the strike anyways, so maybe it won't happen

When are oscar noms released?
Not for quite some time.

I think I was more disappointed by the TV noms than the movie noms. By sheer volume (6 nominees per category!) they got most of them right, even though they still got quite a few wrong. Some choices were pretty damn perplexing (Seriously? Jodie Foster? And Entourage was TERRIBLE this year...how the hell does that get nominated over the Office? The Great Debaters?! Hairspray over Enchanted?! )

I don't even want to talk about the mess that is the Drama - TV series category. Do they ever get that remotely right? No The Wire. No Battlestar Galactica. No Lost. No Dexter? What the hell?

At least Michael C. Hall was nominated.

gloriousmuse
12/13/07, 10:16 AM
i just looked at the list, and im not impressed at all. I'm upset that LOST wasn't nominated because last season was extremely good & Michael Emerson's performance was ignored again. No nominations for Once or for James McAvoy.

this year in general though has been lacking in memorable, great films.

No sarcasm. Sometimes I am completely baffled as to why some shows/movies get the rewards that they do. I am even baffled that Hollywood puts out some films, these stupid fucking films that have been done a million times before. It's ridiculous.

At least this is just the Globes. They're easier to not take seriously than the rest. My biggest beef is with the perpetual travesty that are the Emmy's. I can't remember the last time they had a very accurate nominee list. How many times can they nominate Two and a Half Men?! Once again, don't even get me started on the Drama category. That's always rough.

Bob Payne

The only thing worse than Jodie Foster winning best actress would be Cate Blanchett. She was terrible in Elizabeth. and where the fuck is my man Tommy Lee Jones? that shit is fucked. and fucking Robert Downey Jr. for best supporting? I know it was the first half of the year, but he was fucking tremendous in Zodiac. Fuck the Golden Globes.

I have a feeling (if Diving Bell And The Butterfly doesn't get a Best Picture nomination, which it very well may) that 4 Months, 3 Weeks, And 2 Days will upset it in the best Foreign Language category at the Oscars like Lives Of Others upset Pan's Labyrinth. Which will actually be good, because then hopefully more people will see it. It's an incredible film.

It's 2009 that's going to be horrible. Thish is because of the strike. A movie takes about a year to to 16 months to finish (unless its a big budget blockbuster contender, then it takes longer) and all the movies due to be released in 2008 won't be affected. There's going to be a lot of films that they shelved that get released in 2009.

Every single older person I've talked to either didn't care for or disliked Juno, so it makes sense that it wouldn't win an award decided on by mostly older people.

I used to babysit for a couple whose grandfather was a member of the Oscar board (I can't remember what it's called) but I loved this time of year because he always sent them his movies when he was done watching them and I got to see all the nominated movies before my friends :P

agreed.

Juno had a great script and a few good actors- but it was hardly a best picture winner.

Jan. 22, I think. At like 5:30am local time. For whatever reason.

What's better? (curious, not being a dick)

Couldn't agree more. On all three counts.

Really? The music was a big part of why I liked Into The Wild, and I'm not even a huge PJ fan.
The song from Enchanted deserved it way more. Actually, any song from Once did, but they weren't nominated.

it's really frustrating that they nominate Clooney for Michael Clayton.. which was, by no means, spectacular or anything like that.

I think Christian Bale should have been nominated for Rescue Dawn or 3:10 to Yuma.

Speaking of, no love for Steve Zahn either.

i'm glad to see Atonement, Tina Fey, & Daniel Day-Lewis (I haven't see TWBB, but hell its DDL) left with something.

Disappointed that Enchanted didn't get Best Song though. Hopefully it's nominated for an Oscar so they perform at the ceremony (if it airs).

Wow, I'm totally surprised by everything but Daniel Day-Lewis.

I expected No Country to dominate.

What SHOULD get best picture noms from the Academy:

There Will Be Blood
Zodiac
No Country For Old Men
Atonement
Juno

I don't agree with Juno but I'm glad you included Zodiac. I could have had Into the Wild on that list myself.

And I'm glad Atonement won. Made me smile.

Best Picture - Atonement (called it)
Best Director - Julien Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
Best Actor - Drama - Daniel Day Lewis (duh)
Best Actress - Drama - Julie Christie (Away From Her) (deservedly)
Best Picture - Musical/Comedy (Sweeny Todd)
Best Actor - Musical/Comedy - J. Depp (Sweeny Todd) (duh)
Best Actress - Musical/Comedy - Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose)
Best Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem (NCFOM) (duh)
Best Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There)
Best Animated Feature Film - Ratatouille
Best Foreign Language Film - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Best Screenplay - NCFOM
Best Original Score - Atonement
Best Original Song - "Guaranteed" (Into the Wild)

Not too many surprises there for me. I knew Atonement would win, but it definitely wasn't my favourite of the year.

If Atonement wins Best Picture, I will be furious. And it probably will. It's exactly the kind of film the Academy loves. Pick something different for once dammit.

That's what I was thinking tonight. I haven't seen Atonement yet, but it was too predictable that that would win.

It actually isn't that "predictable" to win. It's an extremely well crafted film, as are many other films that could be nominated for best picture. The film is so beautifully made from the score to the acting, cinematography, etc. I hate when people shrug a movie, especially ones they haven't seen, just because of the buzz it gets awards season. The academy loves it because it's obvious a lot of work went into it and the end project is an extremely well made movie. That can also be said for other films as well. That's my opinion anyway...but you should at least see a film before criticizing it.

It's the same as me saying something like, I haven't see There Will Be Blood, but I hope Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win for best actor because he's always an academy favorite, he's what they always go for so they should give it to someone else or I'll be pissed. I would never say that because I haven't seen the film or his performance (which I'm sure is incredible anyway) and maybe he genuinly deserves it because it is that quality. Maybe it does live up to it's award season hype.

He's an academy favorite because he is arguably the greatest living actor. That's a pretty good reason to be an academy favorite.

.

I saw it. And you're right, it's beautifully made. But that's the best thing about it. It's just something pretty to look at, everything else besides that (with the exception of James McAvoy) isn't GREAT, at least Best Picture great.

I don't think 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days is a better film. It is a very good story and movie overall but TDBATB is a better crafted movie overall. The cinematography, photography, acting, script, and acting all come together perfectly. So I don't see the upset happening in Best Foreign Language. I see it getting the Best Picture nom though.

Honestly, I stopped for a moment to reread and make sure you were being serious. I lose respect for your opinion on film a little more each time you make another comment. Sorry, just don't say some things with complete certainty when really, you're sorely mistaken.

NCFOM is way overrated, I havn't seen TWBB but out of the nominees, I'd say that Atonement was deserving. Did you see the film? The cinematography was stunning. You have no fucking clue what you're talking about, I hate it when people whine about wanting the winner to be something different blah blah blah. You're probably one of those douchebags who thought Children of Men deserved the award for best pic last year....

We're back to this? Give it a rest. I told you I like Atonement, it is a beautifully made film but it's not all around great. Sorry you couldn't appreciate NCFOM, not all films have a heavy handed message like Atonement or Crash.

And about last year, my memory's fuzzy about the nominees but I did love The Departed as well as Children of Men.
