So I have to write a ten page paper for my Journalism & the Mass Media class. I've decided to write about existentialism and its presence in the media. I wanted to add a section in my essay about music/songs having to do with existentialism, but my mind is drawing a blank right now. The only thing I can think of is "Existentialism on Prom Night." and that song isn't even really about existentialism so, I thought I would ask you guys....
Do you know of any songs involving the theme of existentialism??
Help, please!

existentialism on prom night is pretty much the only song i can actually think of that mentions it...
but if you look at some hardcore bands that are pretty active with speaking their views and stuff im sure you could swing it to have an existentialist feel. bane and comeback kid talk about doing stuff for yourself alot and a bunch of other things. i think any song that talks about determining your own purpose could be considered to be sprinkled with existentialism. just be creative

the only band that comes to mind for me is Song of Zarathustra, but they had a much more Nihilistic vibe to their music & lyrics, they were very angry and punx rox.
I would have to say hardcore because alot of lyrics revolve around the individuals experience in life, although they don't come right out to proclaim their lyrics as existenialist they do share some common themes. I think its hard to pin down any bands music as existentialist themed.
film is much easier and I would have to point you in the direction of the Dogme 95 film group. They definantly have similar theories when it comes to the method they use for making films (only natural lighting, use of 16-8mm film, and most of the script seems to deal with how we determine existance and a humans relationship to inatimate objects)
anyways thats really all i can do to help, in the end i would have to say that you yourself would have to determine what music/film you consider to have an existentialist theme. if you haven't already i would suggest reading Nausea by Sartre and Notes From Underground by Dostoevsky, they're both fairly short easy reads and very good.
