I still can never decide between Lifted and I'm Wide Awake. Could go either way depending on my mood.

i really liked wide awake, but i also liked digital ash. i think, though, that the album he'll be remembered best for is Lifted, that was the one that really set him apart and got him attention. Haven't had the chance to hear Cassadega yet.

it should be lifted. that was his best album over all. however it seems people like to notice wide awake, digital, and cassadaga since those are more recent. especially wide awake because of first day of my life.

While the songs on Lifted are fantastic, they're also all over the place which makes the album feel like a disparate collection of songs rather than a cohesive work. The entire stretch between You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. and From A Balance Beam is the best example of that.

perhaps. but dont you just feel this amazing love listening to it...
collection or cohesive, i think he is at his best lyrically.
to me all the songs fit together. though not as well as his other albums.

God, how can I decide.
It's a tie between Cassadaga, LIFTED, I'm Wide Awake, and Letting Off The Happiness.

He is certainly at his best lyrically on Lifted but seeing as I appreciate albums as whole works and not simply songs tied together by a track listing, I prefer I'm Wide Awake. Said album is far more consistent musically and in my opinion his best work thus far.
Don't get me wrong though, I very much enjoy Lifted as well and it is far and away the band's second strongest release.

I'm surprised to hear that folks don't think of "Lifted" as being a cohesive album...I find it to be the most thoughtfully tracked of all his work (right there with "Fevers & Mirrors").
The shifts don't feel haphazard to me - they feel like conscious choices to wring every last bit of (dare I say this word) emotion out of the songs. The album's a journey through self-pity and self-loathing on the way to redemption; there's a lot of stops and starts along the way. Some serious mood changes are appropriate as each memory is recounted, from the fond, bittersweet remembrance of "You Will (etc.)" to the dirty self-destructive lust of "Lover I Don't Have to Love."
Maybe it's just because I love that record, it was my first exposure to Bright Eyes, and "Let's Not Shit Ourselves" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Kudos to the cat who mentioned the Messenger Bird EP (actual title: There Is No Beginning to the Story EP) - the songs on there are ass-kickers. If you haven't heard "Loose Leaves", do yourself a favor and find that song...

The constant sonic shifts on Lifted disrupts the flow, one of the most pivotal aspects of a great album in my estimation. Still a very strong record but in terms of cohesiveness, it doesn't hold a candle to I'm Wide Awake or even Fevers for that matter.

i understand your point of view, i mean, oberst is no meatloaf, and it may very well take a special kind of person to appreciate his music to the full level.
but i think the imperfections in his voice are one of the things i love about him.
i used to hate it, but ive grown so used to it, it's like home to me :-)

I'm Wide Awake It's Morning was a huge discovery for me musically so will always be a favourite of mine. Favourite song is Four Winds though...that is as close to a perfect song in my books as you can get.

Letting Off the Happiness, then Lifted. Probably Fevers and Mirrors next, then I'm Wide Awake. I don't really care about anything else.
