I've seen a few this year and the end of last so let me think:
Juno 10/10 This movie is just, perfect. I really fell in love with the characters and actually cared about the events of the movie. Its just very enjoyable.
Sweeney Todd 7.5/10 I was very excited for this film, but at the the same time I was a little nervous. I was pretty impressed by the vocal work of the stars, but overall the pacing and flow were just off.
No Country For Old Men 9/10 This movie was just chilling. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and the characters were very well developed. The lack of music made things quite interesting, again, chilling
P.S. I Love You 8/10 I really enjoyed this film. It was sad, very sad (if not a bit repetitive in its sadness), and funny and feel-good all at the same time.
and last night, I was in debate about whether to watch Gangs of New York or True Romance. I went for:
True Romance 8.5/10 Considering I am not much of a Tarantino fan, I really enjoyed this. Another cliche drug film, but well done at the same time.
so it looks like I'll be watching Gangs of New York based on what I saw on the last page.

Well in your situation I could see getting some sort of account where you can rent movies, since you plan on watching a lot of movies this year. I rented 5 movies from blockbuster today for 10 dollars.
and yes 10 dollars for City of God is a good deal, its like 20 brand new in stores and the cheapest i've found it used in a store is 14.

I just looked up The Lives of Others because I never heard of it. It sounds very good. It's on the top of my queue now.
That was my favorite foreign film last year while everyone and their mother sucked off Pans Labyrinth.

When i am home, which is usually at night, i stay up till around 4 in the morning watching movies, i guess the fact that i never sleep is the reason i can watch as many movies as i do.

Definitely. In all fairness, the movie was a tad slow at times, but I didn't mind too much. What I did mind was the old couple next to me bitching every time the movie jumped forward or backward in time and the two teenage girls behind me that gave a running commentary.

Foreign films usually come out much earlier in other countries than the U.S. (except for the major ones), so they are eligible for best Foreign Language the year they're released in their country of origin, and in every other category the year they are released in the U.S. Even though The Lives Of Others got a release here before the Oscars (I believe), it wasn't enough to qualify for any other categories.
Hence the reason Ulrich Muhe deserves a best Actor nomination.

Ah, Bergman is easily one of my favorite directors. I tend to like his later work more so than his classic early stage. I really enjoy The Seventh Seal but The Silence of God Trilogy, Persona, Scenes from a Marriage will always be my favorites.

I didn't know that. Has that ever happened before?

It was my second time watching BoaN because it was for my music and film class, so analyzing the effects of accompaniment on silent film era. However, I didn't appreciate BoaN until the second time around which was after I had done all the research to write the 10 page paper. Griffith revitalized the KKK movement in America and the Invisible Empire had up to, I believe but not 100%, 5 million participants/members at one time. I mean in the film, even Woodrow Wilson supports the success of the KKK. Also, it sprung about riots from blacks and protests in NYC and LA but a good portion of Congressmen were somewhat involved with the KKK even up until the late 50s. Crazy.
Teeth is a 72% It's hilarious in a weird way but lots of important gender role themes.

I'd say not much in the PG-13 sense. This could have easily been PG-13 besides maybe one scene where this guy talks about how to get your wife to give you blow jobs all the time. That might be the only thing that pushes it.
I did watch the 3 alternate endings and the third one says its the theatrical version so I guess the ending is different too. The theatrical ending was horrible. I would have been so pissed if I would have gotten that over what the unrated version offers.

My professor burnt me a copy of the theatrical released 2-1/4th hour version. The losts versions are the 7hour, 9 hour, and the 9 2/3rd hour versions. All those reels got melted for silver rumor has it.
I still really enjoyed Greed though. Some scenes don't really make a lot of sense since when cutting the had to cut out entire characters and side-stories. It is a real shame that the entire film is lost. The finale is so emotional.

I think the reason i liked it so much is that I wished i could have grown up in a society were soccer is taken seriously, instead of here, where it's the 5th sport to look at. I didn't really think that Elijah gave that great of a performance, the supporting actors did a better job in my mind, I just really liked what the film was about.

What was your take on He was a Quiet Man? Very similar to Mulholland Drive I think. I'm not fully sure if the events happened but the ending is so ambiguous that it could've. Very Lynchish.
As for Teeth, the theater was packed cause it was free screening and everyone was just laughing cause some of the parts are just so absurd, especially when the vag bites off the dick and it just plops on the floor. But if you pay attention to certain phrases that are said and especially the portrayal of men vs. women sexuality, it's a decent movie. It's so over the top that it was good.
I downloaded Atonement too but I think I'm in the mood for Battle Royale haha. Watching 3:10 right now.

It's a very good film. Marion Cotillard gives the best female performance of the year as Edith Piaf, it's quite incredible.
im really pulling for cotillard for best actress. she is just mindblowing. if she was an american actress, she would be a shoo-in over Christie.

haha you are right, I didn't even notice that. I really haven't heard much talk about that film actually, but i'll be watching it sometime tomorrow.

It's a hard film not to fall in love with. Think if a Regina Spektor song was a movie, that's about the best comparison I can make. Miranda July is a genius and I can't wait for her next film.

Glad you said something because I was going to go pick up Inland Empire today, I still might just to check it out.

I saw Blue Velvet in my film class and didn't care for it really. My friend loves Lynch but I don't see what is so great.
I do want to want to see his other films though to at least see them.

I saw Collateral for the first time last night. Kind of slow at parts, but for as much as I hate Tom Cruise, he nailed it. I enjoyed it, a lot.
Collateral is one of my favorites

Inland Empire is incredible.
Check out Eraserhead. That and Mulholland Dr. are Lynch's masterpieces.

I've been meaning to see it but there's a shit ton other movies that I'm more interested in watching. My understanding of IE is that it's just like MDr. but placed in San Bernardino, aka the ghettoz.

I was surprised too. My friend and I went to see that on a whim. I ended up buying the dvd, lol. The best scene is when he's doing the dance from "Flashdance".

That was funny. I am trying to think of what I thought was the funniest bit. Chris Parnell was hilarious whenever he came into the film. I had to rewind a part he said like four times because it made me laugh so much. It was when Rod does the big stunt and crashes and Parnell says something about how he hopes that none of his crew got in a fight with him earlier because he is more than likely dead.
Just stuff like that is funny to me. I usually don't go for these comedies but I like this style of humor where its so random.

Thank you for informing me of that. That is still the only thing of his that I've seen and I was hoping that would be the case because I was not particularly impressed in terms of it being his most famous/important work or something like that. I still plan to watch Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, and some others in the near future but I was always worried that they wouldn't be any good if Blue Velvet was the best that he could do.

The plot line to Hot Rod was hilarious, raising enough money for his step father to have a transplant and live so he can kick his ass. But I just didn't find the things in the movie that funny other than the Bill Hader scenes.

Start with Mulholland Dr. Get on that ASAP.
Wild At Heart wasn't too great either--don't get how it won him best director at Cannes.

Will do. I have Dune saved on TiVo but I've heard that it's trash. I think I'm going to pick up with Eraserhead and Mulholland.
