Music Forum Sucks. How do we change that?

Everything is just stale.

- Threads about good bands are lucky if they get three pages.

- Idiot new people signing up and making terrible threads. The following flamefests used to be funny, but now it's all just annoying.

- Idiot new peple signing up and making the 2436373th thread about Say Anything, Brand New, Fall Out Boy.

- The Chat threads. There's no spark in them anymore. Yet they still manage to dominate the music forum, which is probably not for the best since this is the music forum.

- A Fatal Goodbye.

So what can we do about this? In my worthless opinion, a lot of great people signed up and became music forum regulars. One day, this forum could be nearly as tight as general...without all the douchebags. How can we improve the music forum? We obviously need a moderator for starters. Someone online often enough to keep watch over here and who won't spend all their time chatting in general. Someone cool, who won't be on people's asses for no reason.

I can think of a few people who'd be great moderators. Ben(lunchforthesky), togepi(doesn't want the job I'll bet), SickofStars, El Jeffe, other people I'm probably missing.


Any other suggestions? Comments? Oh, and before someone says, "well, you've helped ruin music forum too..", I KNOW. Let's talk about ways to change that.

But seriously, General is lame at the minute as well. Good regulars leaving and being replaced by ignorant 15-17 year olds. It's going to happen, given people tend to grow out of this site and the music it covers.

Mm, yes. I don't think there's much anyone can do but hijack every thread and reign hell upon them until they're too scared to come back. It's going to be hard work, but we're fighting a noble cause here.

i'm not advertising for myself, but a mod would be a big help. i know the occasional staff member drops by here to clean up a dodgy thread or two, but it's not really consistent enough

even little things like keeping the "official artists" thread updated would be a big help. people could really get into using it & repeated threads probably wouldn't be as big an issue

I don't see a problem with the music forum general chat. Well, a little problem, too much general and not enough music, but that wouldn't be as much of a problem if there were better threads overall in the music forum. Good band threads get pushed back because there's nothing more to say besides "Oh I like them..", and then there's a million threads for bands that don't deserve even one. :shrug:

Trouble is, if there was a mod it'd most likely be one of the staff, or a mod from the GF and not someone intimately aware of the different personalities in this forum (I.e. someone like Lunchforthesky or togepi or summer skin would just get banned straight away for being themselves and that would suck). Also, I like the fact that a lot of stuff in un-modded, it makes this forum more fun at times (case in point - scene slash fiction). The only way a mod would work is if it was someone good like Craig or togepi, but unfortunately neither of them are up Jason Tate's butt so I can't see that happening.

This forum could use some "light-modding" imo. There's too many threads that stay open way too long (not the scene slash fiction of course), and go too far, and that's when it's not fun anymore.

i don't use chat threads all that often, but i can understand both cases for & against them. i don't mind them all n all, when all other threads get ignored because of them though it can be a little... annoying i guess, but they can be useful & fun. at the end of the day though, they're not going to disappear. i recall tate saying something along the lines of him not having a problem with them, as they constantly bring people & posts to his boards? so they're something we're just going to have to live with, for better or worse

i don't see why this forum doesn't get the staff attention like the general, it's pretty much just as active. i think this needs to be carefully bought to tate's attention sometime soon

Sometimes yes I guess, depending on mood. Though it seems to me he is often stubborn argumentative with people merely for the sake of it, and then proves his superiority by using his status as owner of the site to put the 'smackdown' on people. I won't get into any kind of psychological profile but suffice to say I've dealt with a number of people like that and so long as it's your idea and not theirs they're never going to go for it.

Personally, I think someone like Craig, Kirbie, or Ben would be great pics as mods.

Although I have contributed substantially to several of the chat threads, I know that it does cause the "stagnation" already mentioned.
The best thread lately was the Pitchfork thread, where Vinh, Ben, myself and others discussed and critiqued the various zines' top 2007 picks. At least it was my favorite, as there was some good discussion in that thread. We need more threads like that.

I'm relatively guilty of whoring chat threads but more or less it's about music, believe it or not. Throwing rec's and what not but that's not what I wanted to say.

I agree with this entire thread and whether it'll be hard to convince Jason to assign a moderator (Kirbie or Craig, IMO) to clean up the double, triple, or even quadruple threads about the same bands. To minimize the shit talking (this is why Ben cannot be a moderator, hahaha) but not necessarily allowed to ban. If it's possible to just have the rights (as a moderator) to delete/lock threads and have just that much more power/status than the rest, this forum would top them all. We've already got the community and regulars, we just need some some back up.

This whole notion of a greater interest in "good bands" is absurd. I think most people's tastes are horrible and I'm sure the feeling is mutual more often than not. With music preference being entirely subjective and given the context of this website, FOB, Panic, and MCR are expected to dominate the forum in its current state. Accept it and move on.

As for mods, I'm all for it. Craig is the ideal individual for the position and if time zones aren't too much of a hindrance, it is an entirely viable solution. Here's hoping staff buys into the idea.

Where music discussion is concerned, I'd suggest reverting to an old concept which consisted of genre subsections, but unlike said format, these threads would stand alongside the usual top 10 this and favorite 20 that. This would allow users to discuss whatever they like/dislike/find interesting about certain styles/artists (and potentially even bolster the supposed sense of community) without having to sift through wave upon wave of worthless topics. Another positive result of this measure would be the substantial decrease in "what is punk/emo/indie?" and "recommend me good punk/emo/screamo/indie" threads. Simply enter one of the genre sections and ask. Furthermore, reverting to some semblance of a familiar system may strike a chord with older users who have grown alienated with the forum's recent predicament. Granted, stupid threads will persist but using this approach, perhaps in lower numbers. Just an idea.

Edit: Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind the chat threads if the format I've proposed is implemented. Music discussion would hopefully take place in the appropriate subsections while those who wish to partake in mindless jibber jabber still have that option.

I spend a lot of time in the chat threads, and the topic of music weaves in and out of conversations all the time.. but I dont think getting completely rid of them is the answer.

The Music Forum should be renamed the Up Your Post Count Forum, simply because the "What are you listening to" threads. I post in them once and a while, I always hope they'll spark some kind of music-related discussion about whatever song someone posts. They don't.

And MJ would come once and while and unfuck the system then evaporate. Maybe Tristan from the General forum should come and clean. The idea of more moderators here has been brought up tons of times and never happens, which is sad, because I think when the members are requesting a moderator that should be a sign that is it is fucked.

here's my list of things

1. ban use of the phrase "album of the year (AOTY)" until Dec. 15th each year: why? because it's annoying how everyone's like THRICE IS ALBUM OF THE YEAR then next month SAY ANYTHING then next week JEW. do we really need to talk about every album you like being the best?

2. ban list threads- i'm sorry, but mindlessly listing people we think are good lyricists, or good live bands isn't really musical discussion. if you want to talk about conor oberst writing good lyrics, make a thread, but make it somewhat substantial (examples, reasoning). that's how you create a discussion. not a mindless list.

3. stop arguing with people who know more about genres than you- you don't listen to experimental music. you don't know what emo is. go on listening to underoath and thinking they're a real hardcore band if you want, but stop ruining genres for people who know what they're talking about.

4. realize that being an asshole is half the fun of the internet i seriously can't believe most people get that pissed off when someone mocks their favorite band. stop being musical fascists and laugh once in awhile.

5. any thread that is meant purely to boost post count sucks- ie: what are you listening to? or post lyrics you like. there's no point in it.

6. keep chat stuff in chat threads the reason i think chat threads ruin the forum is because people just talk about the same shit in chat threads that they talk about in every other thread so every thread becomes the same

7. stop making so many threads- music moves too fast so good threads get buried, and making ten threads a day tends to cause people to run out of good ideas. i'm not saying stop making threads, but try and think "will this thread generate some sort of discussion or at least be funny or somewhat worthwhile"?

dude, you'll get used to him. That's a very exaggerated, almost cartoon sort of bile and it becomes almost endearing after a while. Someone was just straight up saying that they did not enjoy my presence, and they were a huge regular in the general forum.

I got a 3 day ban around the time the music forums merged, and I have no idea why, I didn't even log on that day, but I wasn't going to question anything, it was for 3 days.

nah, man. I just think it's pretty silly to call this is hell AOF rips when they really don't sound anything alike. same with mewithoutYou. I like, or have at least listened to, other tooth and nail bands, and I have to say that mwY is definitely 100% nothing like them, mostly because of the vocal approach, but music arrangements and such as well. I'm not super music theory man, but I can tell you that there are definitely mostly different progressions, motifs, etc in their stuff than say like MAE or Underoath or whatnot.

I won't hold anything against anyone for their comments, but they are pretty ungrounded in sound alone, not really collective opinion and whatnot.

I am pretty quick to lump tooth and nail bands together into a few categories too (and it's true, they really do sign bands that are like replicates of each other. MAE's first CD and that Watashi Wa band that went nowhere are pretty good examples)

i haven't been back around enough too notice, but i do remember each genre being filled with does (insert band name here) belong in this category which queued a vast number of 'elite' responses.

from my standpoint the thing that hurt AP's forums the most was when a link to a fall out boy exclusive on ap was put on a fall out boy forum. there was a huge following that came from that. in one way it was great for AP, but it brought a lot of interest in my personal disinterest. it has nothing to do with what is "better music" but just my personal preference and what hurt the forum in my eyes.

when the forum was divided, the punk & emo forums (although i only often used the former) were great, had a real core of quality posters. but the rest were an abosolute waste of time, little to no traffic whatsoever
