Is anyone here into this band? They really blew up in popularity after CMJ, and a ton of music blogs (like goodweatherforairstrikes) were singing their praises for a good while. I'm not exactly the biggest fan, but I've enjoyed what I've heard from their "Wizard of Ahhs" EP.
Thoughts?

They're fun, but nothing more. Oh, and goddamn are you late to the party. They were the blogosphere's favorite band of 2007.

Yeah, but they manage to be more than Metro Station fun.

I mean, they're...this odd amalgam of Pop, with the lovelorn lyrics (and subtle musical cues) of The Smiths, only with much more melodrama (if that's possible) and a desperate need for cleverness that falls flat at times and borders on the absurd, with a touch of the Post-Punk monotone warble. They're a watered down synthesis of Joy Division, The Smiths and The Rapture only with the novelty of being a hybrid of the three, which almost makes them listenable.
They're fun. That's it. They're not particularly good.

There is at least a sense of some form of cleverness and ingenuity in their music instead of just saying Shake It or what not. Laying out a small mini story with I'm Not Gonna Teach.... They're not great story tellers or musicians and they really are just fun, but they do it better than most other bands that go for this sound I believe.

Shake It is a hedonistic party song with (not so) veiled innuendo. I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You is a dance punk/post-punk/dance pop track with an awkwardly written story of lesbianism and jealousy. The lyrics would feel at home in any Fall Out Boy album. Their strength lies in their hooks, much like any pop band, ala' Metro Station.

At the risk of conveying an overwhelming sense of negativity in relation to this band, I do enjoy them, but in the same way I enjoy any Pop or Pop Rock act. I listen to Black Kids in the same way I listen to Fall Out Boy.

That's fair and I'm the same way. I may just try to rationalize that they're better than Metro Station too much haha.
