The jazz talk I've noticed or been involved in usually revolves around Miles, Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, Mingus, etc. No mention of Monk. Maybe it's just here though.

As for Cold War Kids, I completely disagree. People were all over Robbers & Cowards when it came out.

Neither band is pop-punk. Granted the new Panic hasn't been released, but it doesn't look to be heading in that direction (and the old album wasn't). FTSK is power-pop.

And obviously I can't see the future, but do you realize how few bands ever make it as far as Panic did/has? Despite a decent start, it's mathematically unlikely that FTSK will hit the height of success that Panic did.

granted, but under the broad genre, wed stick it under popish punkish.
anyway, i think FTSK does have what it takes, they have something that appeals to everyone really...well mostly everyone.
which is what panic had, plus FTSK has a lot of people like on this site behind em (which the exception of some), which is something Panic has lacked.

At one point people were all over Panic, however short the period was, until they blew up so fast. It happens with every band, the bigger they get, the more haters. FTSK on the other hand already has plenty of haters and they haven't even it hit it that big yet.

Again, though, mathematically, it is extremely unlikely that FTSK will ever hit the level of success that Panic did. FTSK also does not have one of the biggest names in music, Pete Wentz (as hated as he is) behind them.

but FTSK has Matt Squire behind it, who has probably made some of the fastest selling and best selling albums of the past few years.
its a shame, because bands like FTSK are reaping the sowings of bands like Panic! which made the popish punkish scene unliked...partly because people dont like it just cuz there little sister listens to it.

Good point with Squire. I believe he may have produced Panic too. Again, Panic isn't pop punk. Never were, and definitely don't appear to be headed in that direction. I think FTSK's sound both works for them and against them. The are so fucking sugar coated that it's disgusting. Initially this sound attracts throngs of teenagers, but I think its too sugar coated for radio/MTV.

sugar coated...ive never really gotten that phrase, what do u mean by it exactly?
i mean i personally think there sound has enough variety to have something for everyone.
its definitely different from a lot of other popular popish punkish bands (ive resorted to using that phrase now lol)
i just dont really see why so many people hate em, there not that generic when it comes down to it. and theyre not spoiled beyond belief, like a lot of other bands today, and even the band members themselves are likable, tho i dont know how much that counts for.

The best way I can think of describing sugar coated is in reference to candy. Candy often tastes good because of the sugar included in it, but at a certain point it can get too sugary to enjoy. In the case of music, sugar = catchiness. Catchiness is what generally sells albums, singles, but at a certain point too much catchiness can be a bad thing, just like too much sugar.
