11/13/03 - Good Charlotte/Goldfinger/Eve 6 @ the Magness Arena in Denver, CO
What can you say about Good Charlotte? A lot of the times, people will admitt that they love to hate the band. But no matter how you feel, you have to realize that they have become one of the biggest bands in the world, even if you hate the fact of that. The fact was, that they invaded Denver, CO on the brisky night of November 13th where they played to a sold-out crowd at DU's Magness Arena. I don't know if I was at a punk concert, or a TRL episode. The crowd consisted of little girls ranging from 8 to 15 all wearing GC shirts and holding up signs (my favorite read "Benji, I Wanna Be As Punk As You!). The band definitely had some bright openers that I knew I would be very excited to see. Eve 6 hit up the stage first, being my second time seeing the band. To my amazement, the band couldn't seem to hold it all together. They blasted through an extremely short set playing tracks from all their records, but they just didn't contain the energy that I once saw them have. Tracks like "Think Twice" and "At Least We're Dreaming" just didn't contain the the powerful effect that they usually did. Also, the bands energy was not up to par. I don't know if they were having a band day or something, but they just kinda stood there, and it became really boring after a little while.
It is always a pleasure seeing Goldfinger hit the stage. The band has been a huge influence to many groups out there, and without them, I don't know how todays punk genre would sound. I knew I would not be dissapointed by the bands highly energetic, and also very comedic set. They flew through tracks from all their records, but mainly playing songs from "Open Your Eyes". They played newer tracks like "Open Your Eyes", and opening with the very energetic "Spokesman". They had as much energy as they always have on stage, and they blew me away. They sounded incredible, and never looked fatigued. Goldfinger definitely stole the show (like they pretty much always do), and they reminded me why I still like punk music even after how it has been formed into a mainstream industry.
The minute all the pre-teen girls were waiting for, Good Charlotte hit the stage with a fancy set design, and as always, sporting all black. They dove right into "The New Beginning", having the quick intro lead into the fan favorite, "The Anthem". Everyone in the crowd were jumping up and down, but really not going too crazy. The banded definitely sounded amazing. I was completely blown away to hear how well they sounded, but sadly, their stage presence wasn't as impressive. They all just stood there, and Benji really didn't look like he was having a good time as he barely moved. They played all the fan favorites from "The Young And The Hopeless" and "Good Charlotte" like "Girls And Boys", "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous", and others as their sound just got better and better. It got somewhat annoying to realize that this really wasn't a punk concert I was attending, and instead, was really a pop show. The energy by the band was just nothing special and watching Benji stand so still and seeing Joel sing like he is a rapper really didn't make things too exciting. The bands sound was great, but they ruined it by their stage presence. All I know if that Goldfinger stole the show and they probably were the only thing in peoples minds when they were leaving the venue.
Kamtin's Score - 3/5
