11/14/03 - Count The Stars/Copeland/HIPV @ The Bluebird Theatre in Denver, CO
Though many people were upset that The Early November had to cancel the show due to car troubles, people were still very excited to see a wonderful line-up of todays hottest and upcoming acts in the punk/emo scene. Though the bands EP wasn't too impressive to me, I was still very excited to see what Hidden In Plain View could prove with their live show. To my delight, the band was very impressive with their stage presence and pretty much their sound (they sounded a little off at times). They launched through about 6 or 7 songs, playing tunes from their new EP, newer tracks as well, and closing with the fan favorite "Twenty Below". The vocals were a little off at times, but the band was definitely up to par with everything else. Their sound was awesome and they knew how to move on stage as the guitar player continued to get face to face with the fans and sing with all of them. After seeing the band live, I definitely have much more respect for what they do.
Next in line was Copeland. After being completely blown away three months ago by the band, I knew they'd do the exact same this night, and damn did they ever. They played two songs from their debut split and the rest from their beautiful debut release, "Beneath The Medicine Tree". To many peoples amazement, the band has a lot of energy on stage, more than their music holds. The band has somewhat of a relaxed sound, but they definitely bring it up a notch with their live show. They played an amazing set closing with the ever-so-beautiful "California" where not only did the crowd go off, but also the band. They were the talk of the night and everyone fell in love with the band after seeing them play.
I somewhat enoyed Count The Stars' record, but I knew that they would really be something amazing live. Sadly, I was totally wrong. The band had good energy (especially the bass player), but their sound was inredibly horrid. The vocals were completely off key, and the instrumental sound was horrible also. I was very dissapointed by the bands live set because they sound so solid on record. They played songs from their debut record, but none of the tracks held the power that they do when recorded. Sorry to say, but they were one of the worst live bands I had ever seen. Hopefully they were having a bad night, because after seeing them play this night, it was the last time I ever wanted to see them live.
Kamtin's Score - 3/5
