Simply answer yes or no to each statement. At the end of the season, i'll add up the picks; the winner gets to do a little something special with me, and the loser has to shave the cat (thank you, Drew Carey!):

Perfect Game? If so, how many?
No-hitter? If so, how many?
Triple play? If so, how many?
Unassisted triple play? If so, how many?
Four-homer game? Five?
Repeat World Series Champion (Boston Red Sox)? If not, who?

Repeat NL MVP (Jimmy Rollins)? If not who?
Repeat AL MVP (Alex Rodriguez)? If not, who?

Repeat AL Cy Young (C.C. Sabathia)? If not, who?

And the final and most important question (at least to everyone else in my family that's not me or my aunt):

Will 101 years be the charm for the Cubs?

If you think of any other good categories, let me know and i'll add them in.

i dont see the marlins with the worst record .. they've got a lot of young talent, especially in the pitching department. throw in a pretty mediocre NL East and I dont think they'll struggle to win 70 games.

Well when your "best pitcher" last season was 10-15 with a 5.17 ERA, and that guy gets sent off there seems to be a lot to be desired from the pitching staff. I do see Andrew Miller having a good season though.

More then agree with this statement. Get a former Oregon State kid an award. I need to wait a bit longer to make a choice in the NL for Rookie of the Year. I got last years right before spring training started though (NL). I thought Dice-K had a good shot at AL.

I think he's the most overrated prospect in the entire game. Claims of the next Johnny Damon are ridiculous. Damon's power potential shown throughout the minors is something like 60 points higher then anything Ellsbury has put up in the Red Sox system. He's a fast kid whose offensive game is fine for Fenway and he'll be a solid defensive CFer, but his showing last year with the Red Sox completely overinflated everything about him. If he has similar career numbers to Johnny Damon when it's all said and done, it'll be a ROUSING success of a career.

I change my mind everytime I think about the NL ROY. I'll go:

AL: Jake McGee, TB
NL: Andy LaRoche, LA, if he gets the AB's wrestled away from fucking Nomar. Although, Joey Votto, Homer Bailey, or Jay Bruce from the Reds wouldn't surprise me at all. I really think the Reds make a push for 3rd in the division this year.

I went to two different games last year to see him play in Springfield. The first time he wasn't in the lineup because he had a day off. The second time he got hit in the helmet on his first at bat and had to exit the game.

I think that'd be cool to see him in CF out of Spring Training, but it might be a better idea for him to spend 2-3 months in AAA. Nobody on the bases would be able to challenge the arms of Rasmus and Ankiel in the outfield.

Nice! That sounds like a sick setup (though, i don't play much fantasy). I'm definitely going to make a concerted effort to have the Rays games streaming while I watch the Tigers games. If you remember my Yovani Gallardo mancrush from last year, that's definitely turned into basically all of the Rays minor league pitchers -- primarily Jake McGee and the No. 1 pick from last year David Price who likely will start at Double-A straight out of college. Both, big, tall, LH power pitchers. For Price, think Andrew Miller with Justin Verlanders Polish from a 6'6", 240 lbs frame. And Jake McGee was 6'3", 195 lbs when they drafted him a few years ago and he's up to 235lbs pure power pitching muscle. I'm real excited for the Rays season to start, especially after that fucking OUTSTANDING deal they gave James Shields. I can only imagine how quick they'll replenish their system if/when they deal Kazmir since he's looking for a lot more money then Shields got.

What do you see from Andy Sonnanstine? He had a decent second half (sketchy at times) and I didn't get to see him pitch, but the numbers indicate he could fill in that 5th rotation spot well, maybe more. He's 24.

What do you see from Andy Sonnanstine? He had a decent second half (sketchy at times) and I didn't get to see him pitch, but the numbers indicate he could fill in that 5th rotation spot well, maybe more. He's 24.
Looking at this Pitch f/x data (http://baseball.bornbybits.com/php/combined_tool.php?pit=458567&bat=0&type=-1&result=-1&count=-1&r_spd=1&spd=-1&r_brx=1&brx=-100&r_brz=1&brz=-100&l_b=0) (love that thing), he's a soft tosser, so definitely back of the rotation. He had 825 pitches that were either called balls (279;33.81%), called strikes (173; 20.96%), swinging strikes (86; 10.42%), foul/foul tips (149; 18.06%), or put in play in some form (115; 13.93%).

So, of these pitches, which aren't a full years sample, 49.45% (408) were called strikes, swinging strikes, or foul tips. For context, Jamie Moyer had 1055 pitches recorded using MLB's PITCH f/x data and of those 1055, 45.68% (482) were called strikes, swinging strikes, or foul/foul tips.

Sonnanstine throws harder (Curve bottoms out at 72.64 mph up to fastball of 87.93 mph) then Moyer (curve is at 69.8 through his FB at 82.87 mph) and was in the tougher league and seemed to miss bats at a decent clip for the stuff he throws. The Hardball Times has his FIP at 4.35 and his xFIP at 4.42 which are substantially lower then his 5.85 ERA. His K% (K/total batters face) was at 17..5% which is about the lowest you'd want an MLB starters (1 out of every 6 batters k'd is the lowest ... 16.6%). I think that he's got what he needs to be a No. 4 starter through his prime and being a capable No. 5 into his 30's, definitely.

ZiPS projections (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/2008_zips_projections_tampa_bay_dev il_rays/) at Baseball Think Factory have Sonnanstine posting: 4.79 ERA, 201 IP, 138 K, 36 BB, 229 H, 29 HR and a WHIP of 1.32. I think that would be a reasonable projection, maybe a bit more elevated across the board.

Scott Weber
01/24/08, 06:21 PM
4.79 ERA and 1.32 whip would be more than great for a back of the rotation spot in TB, especially if he hits 200 innings. If that team gets some stability to round out the rotation, they'll be great - now they just need bullpen help. Wheeler and Percival is a start, but that pen is paper thin and it's what will prevent them from being a winner (that and their ridiculous division)

bigmike
01/24/08, 06:27 PM
100% agreed. Other projections for Sonnanstine range. That was the ZiPS projection, and they project everyone's numbers out over a full season. They don't account for lack of playing time and whatnot.

Bill James: 4.15 ERA, 154 IP, 167 H, 125 K, 33 BB
CHONE Projection: 4.50, 184, 198 H, 125 K, 50 BB
Marcels Projection: 4.82, 125 IP, 136 H, 95 K, 33 BB.

I think something along the lines of 4.80/180 IP/200 H/140 K/45 BB is reasonable.

Among the features proposed for the ballpark is the "Mast and Arch" retractable roof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retractable_roof). It is a fabric screen that can be pulled over the field and most of the stands during periods of rain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain), thus providing protection from the elements while retaining the feel of an open-air stadium. The roof can supposedly be fully-deployed within eight minutes. In addition, the concourses will be enclosed and air-conditioned.

Fairly certain I brought up Vitters because Cubbynick brought up the Cubs farm system and how there's really not a bunch of talent in it, and I brought up Vitters as one of the potential gems of that system. He will not make an impact until 2011.
