View Full Version : Home Schooling
What are everyone's thoughts on home schooling? What are the pros and the cons? Anyone want to share their experiences?
I'm in 10th grade and homeschooled. I'll share my opinion on it later, but I have to go study for a humanities test!

For mormons.. jk. Everyone I know who is homeschooled is mormon. Also, not very good in social settings or with people. I think it holds kids back. IMO

I was homeschooled from 5th grade to 10th grade, and then I dual-enrolled at the local community college in my junior year, and I'm doing the same currently in my senior year. I'm for it, since it lets people learn in the way they need to, not the way the school system forces them too (left brain learners vs. right brain learners, ADD, etcetera). The pacing is better for some, since you can go faster or slower, and all that jazz.
100% for it, as well as getting involved with other homeschoolers to be good in social settings (ie. co-op classes, clubs, sports, et cetera).

It kills peoples' social skills; it's for people who didn't develop social skills in the public school system; it's for people who aren't old enough to drop out of high school so they say they're homeschooled.
Mostly the last one.
At least in Texas.

I say that home school isn't the best setting in all honesty. I've been doing it for the past four months and I'm ready to go back to real school. It makes you feel lonely and it's like you become isolated from the rest of society. If you are going through with it, it's best that you get yourself involved in a hobby that brings people together. Taking music lessons is a huge help to me. Find something to keep you going 'cause talking to your dog and to you mother isn't going to snag any dates. Go different places and try to get youself out there. It rly does kill your social skills, but in my case it helped it. I actually want to hang with people and talk(about real stuff), and prove to people that I'm not some quiet freak in a corner. My point: Find something that keeps you sane and not an introvert.

I have a lot of mixed feelings on the subject. I was home schooled for 4 years in elementary school (and no, not because I had any sort of social or learning difficulties). I tend to avoid talking about it since people assume all home school kids are religious fanatics or socially inept (see posts above), and I don't like being associated with that stereotype. I think the experience was beneficial academically, as I ended up ahead of most of my friends in school, but there were definitely some social disadvantages, and admittedly, a lot of home school kids are just plain weird. Fortunately, I returned to school in 7th grade, so I like to think it didn't have too many negative effects. That said, I still doubt I would ever have my kids home schooled.

I started home schooling a few months ago to graduate early, because I knew I'd finish the work much sooner than I would if I stayed in my high school, and now I'm graduating a year sooner than my grade. I wouldn't have done it if I would end around the same time that I would if I just went to school, so it depends on your reasons, and how well you can manage with not having your friends around all the time, and etc.
