I'm making quite a few threads in this particular forum, but.. uh.. I can't stand Taking Back Sunday. It's not even like they're not my thing, I just don't see them as being all that talented.
The lyrics need work, for one. "We con't stand for hazy eyes anymore." "September never stays this cold where I come from and you know, I'm not one for complaining..." Woah. Lyrics like that are brilliant. And then something about "Am I turning you on?" or something. Yeah. So amazing.
..Adam's voice is the most annoying thing I've ever heard. Period.
I didn't like John Nolan as a screamer. He sounds 58673762 times better as a regular lead vocalist for Straylight Run.
Fred's good; and it sucks that he's going to have to do karaoke for a while. The same applies to the guy who replaced Cooper.
Most of the songs on "Tell All Your Friends" sound the same. The only things I enjoyed on that CD were the piano intro to one of the songs and "There's No 'I' In Team".
Does anyone at all agree with me? I mean, Taking Back Sunday isn't too bad. I can listen to the CD and not cringe as long as I don't pay attention to about 80% of the lyrics, but I could never listen to that CD twice in one month. Or twice in a season, even.
All my own opinion, of course. And maybe with the change in line-up they'll somehow improve on the next CD.

I like taking back sunday. But I'm not sure about the new lineup...
I definantly like straylight run better though... so I'm glad John and Sean left.

I respect your opinion ... there's alot of good reasons to not like this band, and not like Adam. I just don't agree with any of them :D .
Words cannot explain how much I love this band ... I think it's mainly because even through the summer, where they almost broke up, I still listened to their music to get me through the day and realized how much their music really meant to me. I know it sounds corny, but hey, everybody's got 'that band'. Mine's Taking Back Sunday. I couldn't care less if their a 'boy band' like some say, or if their not punk.
Anyways, the moral of this useless blurb is that I think the new lineup is better than the old lineup. John Nolan leaving, to me, was a good thing, considering he is so much better off in Straylight Run and Taking Back Sunday is just as good, if not better now then they were. Don't ask me why. Fred is amazing at guitar, and his singing isn't as bad as some think. His presence on stage is energetic, and he gives it his all while he's out there.
Anyways, just my two cents on the new lineup. John Nolan leaving was for his own good, even I can't disagree - he is way better off in Straylight Run.

You're a pretty admirable person. I can really respect people who honestly love a band, and I'm really glad they mean a lot to you and et cetera. They really just don't do it for me.
I am definitely going to give their new line-up a chance, though. I wish I had went to see them when they came by with Saves the Day, because I really like Fred, and it would have been nice just to see how he's doing in Taking Back Sunday. I really like Fred's voice, and I don't understand why people complain about it.
I think the major thing that ruins this band for me is Adam. Like I said, I can't stand his voice.
I enjoy Straylight Run. The lyrics are good, the music's nice, and they're piano driven. My opinion is therefore already biased, because I love the piano.. and.. yeah.
Thanks for your opinion.

My take on Taking Back Sunday is a lot like xforgetdecember's:
I think, musically, they are catchy. I think they click well together...on cd (I'll get to that in a sec.) Lyrically, I am not a huge fan of emo stuff. I feel it is too cliched now. But, if I look past the lyrics, they are a talented band.
Now, as for their live performances, I think they are both great and terrible. In terms of energy, they are above par. They have an energy on stage that is hard to beat. Even if you don't know the songs (which I didn't the first time I saw them a while ago) you can still have fun. On the other hand, their sound is absolutely awful. Adam cannot sing at all live. The other night my roommate was switching through the channels late at night. Suddenly, I heard what I thought was a very bad cover of "There's no 'I' in team," so I told him to turn it back. It was, though, in fact, the actual band doing a performance on Carson Daily.
So, therefore, my opinion on the band is rather mixed. If I had to pick, though, I would say I do like TBS....if not for anything more than just plain fun.

I agree that Adam doesn't sound good live, but thats just my opinion.
I love their CD anyway...but I have to say that I like Straylight Run more...
adam needs to learn how to sing live and i might have more than 2 percent respect for this band. i'm not here to insult anyone that is in love with this band or anything. adams voice is highly annoying to me. especially when they covered that cure song. when they play live adam sings 3-5 words out of every song and does circus tricks with his microphone. it just gets to me. i feel the only good thing that made taking back sunday was john nolan, and i'm glad he got out and sean with him. listen to straylight runs lyrics and you can tell how the rest of the band is. they sing mainly about their experience in taking back sunday.
i'm tired
cynical and broken, but wiser
heavy with a sense of resentment
but i used to be so much different
i used to have so much faith
when i started
you knew that i always meant it
i knew i could make a difference
i struggled to be heard
and then finally, one day people started listening
and i knew it
but as soon as it began it was ruined
a slow descent from unique to routine
over and over
"just do it again and this time with feeling"
the spotlight
the focus on the friends and the feelings
that made those stupid songs all worth singing
and don't you say a word
unless you're pretty sure that you want it analyzed
so we drove
for what seemed like days
over roads
and four lane highways
we said all we had to say
and i realized in time that it didn't mean anything
but i can see how you like taking back sunday so much. everyone has 'that band' that they adore and are amazed and so moved by. mine is blink-182. they always have been and always will be. they got me into the type of music i listened to back when i was alot younger dude ranch years and it developed into the music i listen to today.

john's voice isnt that great either

man, i kinda get tired when people focus so hard on the technicalities of music. music is meant to do one thing, and one thing alone. inspire. so what, if adam hits wrong notes, or doesnt even sing a lot of the time (which is very true). the point is, look on stage and you see 5 guys pouring their souls into every song, rocking out like there is no tomorrow, like its their last show. who cares what the song is about, or if the songs sound the same (which they dont). taking back sunday means one thing, "rock out". and live, its hard to beat their stage presence. just listen to it and enjoy the melodies and have a good time. at least they sing better than blink 182 live. cheer up emo kids

I agree that with you for the most part. They put on a great show. Although, I wouldn't say all five pour their heart into it. Adam, seems to pour a bottle into it (sorry for the terrible metaphor), in that, he always is drunk whenever I've seen him on stage. Still, they put on a high-energy, hard to beat (but beatable) show.

This might be a long post 'cause of how strongly I feel about Taking Back Sunday so here you go:
I basically agree with TakingBackRufio...
Taking Back Sunday means so much to me. They are THAT band that just made me realize what my problems were, how to solve them, how they were affecting me, and what they really were. "Tell All Your Friends" got me through one of the hardest times in my life and that CD I still listen to EVERYDAY!!! That is not exaggerating. I of course listen to other music as well, but I always manage to listen to "TAYF" at least once a day. That album means so much to me and I don't think I can ever forget it or not have it. I think it'll always be my favorite album 'cause of how much personal meaning it holds to me.
About the lineup:
I think the new line-up is great too. Matt is amazing live and holds so much energy while on stage and Fred can actually sing too and compliments Adam's voice as well. You just have to look and listen for it. Also, Fred is an amazing guitarist and amazing writer as well (i.e., Breaking Pangaea). Don't get me wrong...When I first heard about the "possible split" I was devastated. This band changed so much on my outlook in life and just being who I am as a 17/18/19 year old.
About Adam:
Adam is my favorite frontman of all time. I think he just has an amazing "rockstar persona" and you can't help but watch and pay attention to him. He has amazing stage presence and enjoy his voice actually. It's unique and different and stands out. And don't worry .. I just saw the last week two nights in a row (second and third time w/ the new line-up) and they're getting better and better and I could hear Adam a lot more this time around. He's improving and the band is as well. I expect the album to be quite good if everyone at least gives it a fair shot.
Anyway, I think it was good for everyone that the new line-up occured. Talking to and meeting Adam he just seemed happy. Watching Mark and Eddie .. they seemed happy. When I saw Straylight Run awhile back they all looked happy. I'm just glad everyone is happy and now we have two amazing bands, but TBS will ever hold the spot as "MY BAND" if you know what I mean. TBS is to me as Yellowcard is to Tate or to whatever "your band" is to you. Nothing can ever replace that and don't let anyone try to take that away from you. That's why all this TBS bashing that has been going on doesn't bother me ... 'cause just you wait and see ... the new and upcoming TBS is going to be just as good (Yes .. I love the new songs as well).
Then everyone will jump back onto the bandwagon...

adam is an amazing kid and it sucks how much artists personal lives get exposed to the public, when you make a mistake i can assure that a half a million kid dont find out in a matter of weeks. it just kind of sucks and as far as the new lineup, it is really good. i saw the 3rd shwo they played with fred at furnace fest and they did absolutely amazing. it was their best performance ive ever seen. this band is extremely good and well capable of writign an amazing follow up album to tell all your friends.

I'm not sure how I feel about the new line up. One minute I think it like and the next I'm not sure.
Anyway, it was definitely for the best that John left TBS. I didn't like him all that much as a screamer. Straylight Run is definitely a better fit for him.
I really loved TBS the past year but when john had left the band i understood i lost much respect for them. Personally i almost can't stand anymore adam, i think becoming famous has influed on him negatively. But hey, i still consider Cute without the e (cut from the team) as my favourite song ever, it's the only song i can listen to when i'm in a particular mood.

John jumped a sinking ship, he saw what was coming. good for him.
Adam says they continued on for the fans, HAH he just couldnt stand the thought of not having thousands of 14 year old girls swooning for him. If tbs wants to keep going they should just focus on new material because the new guy will never be john and im sure he doesnt like kareoke.

Suddenly, I heard what I thought was a very bad cover of "There's no 'I' in team," so I told him to turn it back. It was, though, in fact, the actual band doing a performance on Carson Daily.
Well, considering they didn't play "There's No 'I' In Team" on Carson Daly's show, it must've been a bad cover band.
And yes, I do know they played it in the studio and it just wasn't broadcast on TV, so please don't bust my balls on that.
BTW, this is my first time on these forums in a while and I noticed this one, and what the fuck is the point of this board?? Isn't there enough bitching on the Internet anyways?? Do we really need a board about which bands suck??
Those were rhetorical questions.

For me, Taking Back Sunday will always hold a spot as 'My Band' as well. It hasn't changed since I first stuck 'Tell All Your Friends' in my cd player and it probably never will change, that's how much this band means to me. I would go on and on about this new lineup and what this band means to me, but it would be exactly the same as what TakingThursday said.
I hate to bring this up ... but ... Yellowcard is 'that band' to Tate. Well, not to ruin an amazing post, but 'that band' for him used to be Taking Back Sunday, if I'm not mistaken.

ok, so i just saw TBS in concert for the first time since they lost John Nolan...and I mentioned before that I would finally be able to make a decision on them after that. So, my opinions on them are pretty much as they were before: They are a fairly good band with a ton of energy and a good show.
Musically, I like their sound and style (although they should never try to cover The Police again)...although I didn't like the new songs they played as much (BUT I need to hear a studio recording of that before I can truly make a decision on them). They still put out so much energy in the concert and Adam still couldn't hit half of his notes (he let the crowd sing on some or just sang and octave lower), but in a concert situation, the energy makes up for that. Fred sounded very good, almost as if John Nolan had not even left.
So, overall, TBS is still a good band in my book. They definitely deserve another chance to prove themselves on the upcoming album.

Like, for instance, I don't like TBS. But you apparently do. And I think Straylight Run is 34875433 times better than Taking Back Sunday, but you evidently don't. Gee. Go fucking figure!

One thing though:
Their lyrics aren't all that bad...what about the famous "The truth is you could slit my throat, and with my one last gasping breath, I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt" line? I always thought that was one of the greatest lyrical lines ever created. That's just me though. Heh.

That line isn't too bad, but in their songs, there's like a few rather decent lines thrown into it. Listen to a Bright Eyes song. Conor Oberst just keeps on pumping out really decent lines, one after another, and they're pretty cohesive.

I don't believe the question was about Brand New, and my signature isn't refering to Jesse Lacey. You shouldn't generalize things if you don't know what you're talking about.

Who cares if this thread is / was about Brand New? I said this thread is about Taking Back Sunday, not Brand New. I just agreed with someone about having TBS up their ass. I'm not calling anyone out about liking a band, it's not my decision of what bands everyone can like. I simple agreed that it's a rarity to find someone who isn't all about this TBS hype, with the member replacements and Straylight Run and all of that. But alright, I have Brand New up my ass. It doesn't bother me, it's not like I'm going to explain why. I have my reasons, and I don't feel the need to express them.

What's the fucking difference? You didn't have to go and say that 'we are shoved up their ass'. You fucking people, think about what you say before you do. What if somebody said to you, 'you have Jesse Lacey shoved up your ass'? What would you think? Would you think they're a fucking dumbass for making such a smart-ass, stupid, immature comment? Well, that's what I think of your comment. You could of simply said ... 'I don't like Taking Back Sunday's music because I don't enjoy it.' Nope, that's too simple for you. You have to cause a fucking stir about it and insult us Taking Back Sunday fans. Brand New rules, but I feel sympathy for them if they have more fans like you.
I like TBS a lot, but I like music that I relate to. I find a lot of their lyrics are things I wish I had said. But if you don't like them then maybe it's because you have never been through that or don't know what it feels like so how can you sit there and tell them that their own emotions suck?

Dude. Who doesn't break up with someone? Eh? Just about every song they write is about some stupid relationship. Their emotions suck because they're displayed with awkward lyrics that are nothing near amazing.

Plz go listen to "There's No I In Team" and "Cute Witout The E" a lot closer next time. Thanks:
For example:
"I know you well enough to know you never loved me. Why can't I feel anything from anyone other than you?
PS - John isn't the only one that wrote "No I In Team". Adam had just as much input and lyrical development as well.

Their emotions suck because they're displayed with awkward lyrics? Oh, so now 'good' lyrics that are different, have complexity and show emotion are awkward? I won't even start on relationships. Lots of bands write songs about relationships, but Taking Back Sunday does it the best, no matter what anybody says, that's what I think. And not all their songs are about relationships. There's No I in Team, absolutely incredible song, you could say it's about a relationship, but it's not referring to girls.
'And I've got a twenty-dollar bill
that says you're up late night starting
fist fights versus fences in your backyard
Wearing your black eye like a badge of honor
Soaking in sympathy
from friends who never loved you
nearly half as much as me '
'Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
it's just what anyone would do
Take the time to talk about it
Think a lot and live without it
Don't believe me when I tell you
it's something unforgivable'
'This is me with the words on the tip of my tongue
And my eye through the scope down the barrel of a gun
Remind me not to ever act this way again
This is you trying to make sure that you're seen
With a girl on your arm and your heart on your sleeve
Remind not to ever think of you again'
Whoever doesn't like those lyrics, you can burn in hell for all I care. Because I do like those lyrics.
And don't even say I'm too 'narrow-minded' to like good music with good lyrics. Because that's just a bullshit comeback that everybody uses these days.

Just because they're relatable doesn't make them amazing. Mest writes relatable lyrics, and are they amazing? No.
By relationships I didn't just mean that little thing called "love" shared between, in an orthodox situation, a boy and a girl. RELATIONSHIPS also include friendships. Relationship means, by definition, the condition or fact of being associated or connected. Sorry that I didn't clarify that, but, you know.. whatever. I also did say "JUST ABOUT every song they write is about some stupid relationship". Yeah. That's right.
The band that writes about relationships best definitely isn't Taking Back Sunday. Taking Back Sunday is juvenile and generally vehement towards the subject of the song. Not too appealing.
..Their lyrics may show emotion, but they are by no means complex. If you want complex lyrics, analyze a God damn Bright Eyes or Thursday song.
And I don't tell people they're too narrow-minded to like "good" music with "good" lyrics. I don't even fucking directly insult or verbally attack people who like a band that I don't like. Or hate a band that I love. Unlike some people.

Plz...out of respect...don't ever mention Mest and Taking Back Sunday in the same sentence! HUGE DIFFERENCE! TBS is my fave band and I understand they're not yours so I respect that, but just don't disrespect them by associating them with Mest. Thanks.

Ok ... you like Brand New, we like Taking Back Sunday?
Are you illiterate? I didn't even make the original post about having Taking Back Sunday up everyone's asses. I simply agreed. Did you fail to recognize that?

Well imagine that. Someone else stated this first, in all it's entirety.
It's not my fault you take this so personally, because for one, I didn't say anything negative about Taking Back Sunday fans. And did I single out someone, such as yourself, as having them up your ass? No, I don't believe so.
And furthermore, "Brand New rules, but I feel sympathy for them if they have more fans like you" just totally contradicted your whole post. What were you trying to conclude? Oh, that I shouldn't generalize Taking Back Sunday fans as having the band up their ass? But then you insult me, as a Brand New fan, when you just did whatever I supposedly did to all the TBS fans on this post. Yeah, it goes both ways.
Your post may have made sense, but that last comment just disregarded everything you were trying to make clear. Why would anyone see your point of view, that you have been done an injustice, but you may act the same? You're just as bad a fan of TBS as I am of Brand New.
Here's a thought, did I ever say I didn't like Taking Back Sunday?
