Not a patch on the original though. Jesse Lacey wishes his lyrics were as good as Beam's.

Of course, good effort though.

Best part of a show with ANY of these bands is the part where the last note from the stage rings out as they say goodnite and walk off stage while the house lights come back on.

Most of his covers are pretty solid.
Lacey's voice doesn't seem like it would suit the song but I'll look around and see if it's any good.

dont we all? lyricists, that is.

ive gone back and looked at the lyrics that are going to be on northbrook's album and they're actually disappointing to me, they're not terrible but they're definitely not anything special, just adam lazzara style pop-punk lyrics. and they have a few really bad cliches. i definitely need to change the way i write lyrics.

Good call, no offence or anything. Just cause it's pop punk doesn't mean the lyrics need to blow, set a new trend for lyrical quality in pop punk. Look at Iron & Wine, Neutral Milk Hotel etc.. and try and be that good. Lyrics are just as important as the music to me and way too many bands phone it in or don't try. They should be something you spend a long time perfecting for every song you write. I can't imagine Sam Beam can just reel that stuff off, it really shows that he puts effort into it.

yeah, william doyle and i have a long music history together and especially back when we both listened to only pop-punk he used to learn from my lyrical fluency, but we have since matured our tastes and his lyrics are more meaningful, more varied, more original, and more eloquent than mine, and hes well on his way to becoming a sam beam or at least a kevin devine while ive only improved that fluency and smoothness. his advice to me was to stop sitting down for a few hours staring at a word document trying to write something to fit a melody, which is the root of my problem. it causes me to take cliches and try to twist them my own way instead of randomly thinking of something unique. it causes me to focus on one repetitive theme instead of using several themes and metaphors and comparisons to construct a well-formulated overall message. it causes me to write about very unimportant and usually hypothetical topics, really its actually variations of the relationship topic which has been beaten to death these days and im sick of it. when you look at it its a very pretentious, forced way of writing.

will said what i should do and what he does is to get a notebook and just write randomly about whatever issues im thinking about, whether they're in my personal life or large scale issues that i have strong opinions about. the more you write about a particular subject, the more deeply my opinion can be formulated and expressed, and the more eloquent the writing becomes. then, when you go back and look through the notebook, you'll realize several of the lines can be changed in structure to fit the song and with some tweaking you really just pull wise lyrics out of writings on a subject you've spent several weeks on. so im planning to attempt that strategy on future releases for sure.

as you said i dont feel like any genre should oestrecize you from writing well either. really i dont limit northbrook to pop-punk, it just happened to be the music i was feeling and arbitrarily writing last year. hell the next album could likely be a folk rock or indie album, and if i felt it i'd write electronica or post-hardcore, it really makes no difference to me as long as i love what im making and am sincere about it.

theguy77
01/28/08, 02:27 PM
disclaimer for the above though: im not totally against writing about relationships, if its something that's going on in your life then if you're a musician by god you SHOULD write about it since it is a pure true emotion and sincere writing, you just have to try to do it in an eloquent, non-cliche way. however i think writing hypothetically about relationships should stop.

theguy77
01/28/08, 02:44 PM
That's an intetresting way to go about it.

With indie bands and "literate" (awful term I know) bands like The Decemberists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Iron and Wine etc.. that have notoriously complex and smart lyrics from what I've seen they write the lyrics first because what matters most is the lyrics. Iron and Wine have slightly strayed from that with the new album being more interesting musically but essentially with all those bands it's the lyrics and vocals which matter so they come first, the music accompanies it. I'm not sure how well that would work for pop punk but the avantage of it is that it gives you complete lyrical freedom to write anything you feel in any way and if you're music writing skills are up to the task then you can find away to accompany those lyrics later.

I don't play in bands anymore cause I just got really sick and apathetic towards the whole thing but if I were to start again I'd definitely do it this way.

yeah it might be a sweet idea its just hard to when your music is based on something more intricate than acoustic music.

any particular reason you stopped caring about playing in a band?

i don't really think this works that well. i mean, it works insanely well when you're really really really pissed off about something, but i find that level of emotion is quite rare and often you end up writing down the same kind of cliches as you did before. i always found that just having a note book and writing down random lines as they come across is much better. even if they're not your random lines. i mean my notebook is full of quotes from people like debord, but writing down other stuff that you like often causes you to come up with small lines of your own. then when you sit down to write a song you just string lines together. you'll often find it works and all you have to do is write a little bit of "filler" (filler being connections between lines, it doesn't mean they have to suck).

i always thought that the creation process was rather organic, and sitting down to do anything like writing about things you're going through was too mechanical.

oh but see thats the thing these writings are never forced, its just like whenever you're thinking of something randomly then instead of keeping the thoughts in your head write them down. its still arbitrary and sincere and not as mechanical as it sounds. and its not like you sit and write about the same thing every time, you just tend to write about similar subjects that are more important to you. you could write for 5 weeks or so and pull 3 songs about entirely different things from it. i dunno i mean it's worked well for will up to this point, im especially impressed with his lyrics on "revolutions & rotations".

x togepi x
01/28/08, 02:51 PM
i think at any point when you "sit down to write", it's going to be mechanical. the sitting down part is more like compiling than writing. i mean you say sitting down can be sincere, which yeah, i agree, but that doesn't mean it's not going to end up cliche. cliches are cliches because they're sincere too much of the time.

theguy77
01/28/08, 02:53 PM
yeah well in any case im open to experiment. anything to separate me from these pop-punk lyrics.

1. People are too unreliable
2. People like/listen to shitty music and want to rip off said shitty music.
3. I can't sing and could never find anyone else who could to a level I thought acceptable.
4. Most people just wanna rip out any kind of shit in an hour and then play shows with shitty bands. Rather than actually put a lot of time into what you write.
5. Finding five or more band members who are competant instrumentally and want to contribute and put time and effort into music is quite difficult.
6. I honestly know pretty much no one who doesn't want to either play generic metalcore, pop punk or something to do with the Libertines (whom I detest).

and probably other reasons but I have probably been in like 10 bands plus which lasted to differing degrees and none turned out remotely how I wanted or produced any worthwhile music.

all problems i have faced. since im the songwriter and its my music i pretty much get to choose who to add to the band so its not like im incapable of writing without other members but it is the reason why northbrook is still just me and a drummer. things are looking up though ive found two prospects that i just need to work out. the biggest problems to me were:

1. the overall insincerity about the music, as you described, involving people who just want to throw whatever sounds mainstream together and get famous
2. the fact that most people are not actually as talented as they say they are haha. so many people have problems playing anything in a rhythm separate from a standard constant strumming non-syncopated 1-2-3-4 beat, and especailly singers, so many of them have weird voices and maybe some sense of note perception but no ability to pinpoint those notes when singing a run. (im looking for a dual vocalist)

They'd end up sucking for other reasons even if they wanted to play indie stuff.

They'd suck on their instruments, be in it for the girls not the music, never practice, write shitty music and not be able to take criticism or a whole combinations of other reasons why it wouldn't work out.

well i mean, this is going to happen regardless. i guess it just depends on how much you really want to play.
