In Fiction - Ghost
Record Label: Boomtown Records
Release Date: 2007
So many bands get labeled "the next best thing" and fail to live up to that expectation. Coming from the thriving punk/rock Adelaide music scene in Australia, In Fiction perform past this expectation with their sophomore effort Ghost.
This five track EP is just a sample of what this up and coming band from Australia’s musical hot-bed are capable of. “When the Camera’s Off," “Silhouette,” and “Ghost” shows the raw and aggressive side of the band, showcasing heavy guitar riffs and fast drumming juxtaposed to the melodic soundings of lead singer Brad Gilbertson’s voice. Accompanied with the almost expected element of every album/EP nowadays, the seven minute ballad “Awake Without You” provides the softer more melodic side of the band to the listener, which along with its breakdown of silence proves to be the EP’s downfall, as the composure of the song doesn’t flow with the energy of the EP. The standout track “If You’re Up Late” is the cross section of the band’s work, showcasing what the band is truly capable of: memorable lyrics, catchy melodies while at the same time showing the energy and talent that has earn the label from their critics as the next best thing in Australian music.
Lyrically, the album concentrates on the motifs of sleep, dreaming (mostly evident on "If You're Up Late" and "Ghost"), and love and loss, which are all blended together to produce a work of true effort and talent. While a five track EP just provides the listener with just a slice of what to expect in the future, expect big things from this band, because if this is what they can produce on a five track EP, who knows what they can make on their debut album.
