11/20/03 - Yeah Yeah Yeahs/The Locust @ The Gothic Theatre in Denver, CO
Besides the fact that this show was full of "hip" kids that were part of the scene (where I felt somewhat out of place), I think everyone knew that we would be experiencing an amazing show. And truthfully, it was better than I even expected. Local favorites, The Swayback, opened up giving a very boring set as their sound consisted of indie themes and strange screaming that arrived out of nowhere. Basically, the band sounded like a mediocre Interpol.
Without a doubt, The Locust have to be one of the most unique bands out there today. Not only for their sound, but more or less their appearance. Arriving on stage with the insect costumes and not too many words, they blasted through a 20 plus song set. The thing is, I found myself clapping every 45 to 60 seconds because the bands songs are so short. None the less, I was completely blown away and impressed with ever aspect of the bands live show. Their energy is terrific as well as their solid sound. Though people may not take the band seriously because of their look and that their music needs a special type of ear to appreciate, after seeing them live, I came to the conclusion that they are by far one of the most talented bands out there today. I was speechless when I witnessed how fast each member was playing their instruments. The band played majority of their songs from their latest record "Plague Soundscapes", but they did squeak in a few from "Flight Of The Wounded Locust". The Locust put on one of the most impressive live shows I've ever seen and I can honestly say that I am now hooked to the band
After a surprisingly short wait, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out with the most simple stage set up (as they had tiny amps and a simple set up on the drum kit). To everyones enjoyment, the ever-so-lovely Karen O. came out drunk as ever. They blasted through an amazing set, playing almost every song from "Fever To Tell". The band sounded up to par on everything, the their stage presence was more than asked for, especially from Karen O.. They played fan favorites like "Cold Light", "Modern Romance", "Date With The Night", and arriving after the encore with "Pin" as the crowd jumped up and down and enjoyed the amazing set the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were offering us. I was completely amazed with Karen's stage presence. I have never seen someone move like that on stage as she pranced, danced, and stuck the mic completely in her mouth countless times as she screamed her ass off. Thanks to The Locust and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this was by far one of the best shows of the year, and everyone should take the opportunity to see these bands together because if you don't, you will be missing out. These two bands set great examples of how live shows should be played, and everyone should learn a thing or two from them.
