David Fincher's new film (Zodiac, Fight Club, Se7en) is about a man who ages backwards. I haven't read a full synopsis that gives off much more detail than that. I believe it's based on a short story. Brad Pitt stars as Benjamin Button and Cate Blanchett also has a leading role. It premiers Nov 28th.

This is one of my most anticipated for 2008.

Has anybody heard much about this or looking forward to it?

It's based off the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

We were actually talking about this movie in another thread in here. Looks to be really good and as much money as they put behind it, it seems as if the studio is hoping for big things from it too.

Yeah, Fitzgerald. I remember looking it up some time ago, but couldn't think of his name.

How much money did they invest in it?

Tell me what you think if you get around to it.

I have so many books on my desk that I'm waiting to read. I'd recommend Revolutionary Road, especially since Mendes is directing the movie with DiCaprio and Winslet. Mendes=guaranteed great movie. The theme is similar to American Beauty, so I can't wait to see it.

Was it the ending? I really wish more people knew the actual story going in, because I feel like too many people rag on it just because they didn't catch the killer.it's sort of the ending for me even tho i knew/read about the story before hand. it just sucks when a story ends like that and that was one of my worries going in to it. i do think fincher did an excellent job with the story and sticking with the facts and still made a compelling story, it's just not one of those movies that has any lasting power for me so thats why i would never say it was my favorite fincher movie.

Whoa, "far and away"? Have you seen Se7en?

I've seen all of his work. Se7en is certainly good--great, even--but Zodiac is put together with infinitely more care and elegance. Fincher is able to perfectly capture the sense of utter confusion that the characters felt through a (wonderfully) long running time and tons of one-shot plot points; this, in turn, is what caused most people to dislike the film.

Zodiac is his most mature work, his best-photographed, and his most misunderstood. (I get the feeling that Se7en and Fight Club are story-based, whereas Zodiac is character-based.) Se7en, Fight Club, and Zodiac are his best films (in my opinion, they get better in that order), but I believe that Zodiac will best stand the test of time.

Very good rebuttal. It is hard to disagree with any of this except for the subjective opinions on favorite films. I think Se7en and Fight Club will have more lasting power with me, though. I completely agree that Zodiac is his most mature and misunderstood work to date.

/agreement.

One main thing that I love about those three movies are the endings. The endings are tremendous. The ending to Zodiac left me wanting more but I felt a sense of clousure at the same time because I felt I had a connection w/ JakeG and knew that it was him, and it still gives me shivers that moment of silence when they both stare each other in the eys.

And the ending of Se7en just blew me away. Could be one of my most favorite endings in any movie. And the way Fight Club closes is just perfect in every manner.

Se7en has the best story, I think, especially when translated to the screen. Zodiac is slightly over-reaching in its grasp and depth, but I think that it helps the film overall. If it weren't a case that became so chaotic, it wouldn't work in the least.

Stylistically, Fight Club is my favorite--there's one shot where Tyler starts speaking directly into the camera and the frame starts shaking and his voice becomes distorted--it's gorgeous. The same can be said about the single-frame instances of Tyler before he's introduced, the projectionist scene, and (of course) the IKEA catalog shot. It's also got the best soundtrack--Fincher should use the Dust Brothers more often, I think.

reductiondesign
06/20/08, 10:04 PM
And another thing--I think that Fincher's use of CGI can get very old, very quickly--the "through the mug" dolly in Panic Room; the sequence with the bombs in the building at the beginning of Fight Club--this sort of CGI (and I should say, almost all CGI) is painfully obvious. Zodiac has very little of this--what CGI was used was much less obvious, even to the point of not knowing it's CGI (http://youtube.com/watch?v=TT491ctM8Kk).

Fincher's final important decision was how to age the characters throughout the movie. In films prior to this one, like Forrest Gump, different actors were used for the same character throughout their lives. Fincher decided to go in a different direction by using the newly developed motion capture technology called Contour System. CS allowed Fincher to tape other young and old actors and then to seamlessly place other faces on to their bodies. This allowed him to create young and old Pitt and then place that face onto the bodies of an actor of the respective age. As a result, all the shots of Button throughout his life will actually be Pitt. The set back with using CS is that it is untested and takes an extremely long time to implement, actually doubling production time. However, Fincher being the perfectionist that he is felt that was worth the lost time. With the story, cast and technology set, filming was finally ready to begin in 2007.

Interesting. If done poorly it will undoubtedly ruin the film.

FIRST REVIEW! And I'm liking the sound of it a lot.

http://www.joblo.com/1st-ben-button-review

Last night on the Paramount lot was the first test screening of David Fincher's THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON! God, why do I live in New Jersey when such cool shit happens in Los Angeles...

I feel his pain.

It really didn't feel like a Fincher flick. If I had to compare it to something else I'd say it's FORREST GUMP meets BIG FISH meets THE NOTEBOOK. The story is simple but doesn't feel too simple. Guy goes from older to younger. It just tells his tale. It's absolutely one not to miss later this year.

I can't wait.

I was about to bump this. Anyways, I was avoiding watching the trailer because I already know it's going to be good, so it's best to save it all for when I actually watch it. But, today at work, the trailer was shown in a meeting during a powerpoint presentation. And by meeting, I mean surprise 50th birthday party. A friend made the birthday guy his own Curious Case of _________ trailer with photos but beforehand, showed the actual movie trailer.

From the looks of the movie, I completely got the Big Fish comparison. Also, I think the trailer gives too much away, especially at the end. The plot is clear, but there's still things I would have preferred not to see.

I scored a few tickets for an “UNTITLED” screening at Paramount Studios while standing in line at the Tropic Thunder screening, which is beyond hilarious. After a long wait in the burning sun, we were taken inside Paramount Studios and seated in one of the nicest screening rooms I’ve ever seen. Whatever the film was—I was just excited to watch something on their screen. But I was not disappointed when we found out it was David Fincher’s upcoming film, THE CURIIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON.

This will be spoiler free.

The film tells the story of Benjamin Barker (Brad Pitt) who is born an old man and ages backwards. In the midst of his awkward and unexplainable body changes, he falls in love with a fellow small-town girl by the name of Daisy (Cate Blanchett). The film tells the story of Benjamin’s entire life, however, it mainly focuses on him and Daisy, who are slowly but surely aging in opposite directions. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story of the same name.

First off, this does not feel at all like a David Fincher film. I think die-hard Fincher fans are going to be quite surprised. At its core, it’s a very romantic film. He has certainly stepped out of his box and certainly out of his usual realm of creativity. There were many moments in the film that felt almost Tim Burton-eqsue.

The film starts out amazingly. The story itself won’t have any trouble reeling people in because Fincher is a great storyteller and the source material is top notch. However, I felt this film suffers from the same mistake Zodiac suffered from: things fell apart toward the end. The film is somewhere near three hours. By an hour and a half/forty five, the audience was getting restless. I could hear them squirming in their seats in front and behind me. The last hour is ultimately weighed down by a lot of repetition that has to do with the romance between Pitt and Blanchett. The film is truly great up until the final hour where things begin to feel muddled and unnecessary.

I know that seems like a lot of negative feedback. However, trust me, there is a great deal of excellence in the film. Claudio Miranda’s cinematography paired with Alexandre Desplat’s beautiful score makes for some truly magical moments. In fact, most of the film is filled with these kinds of moments. It works more than it doesn’t work; it’s just the final hour that needs to be tightened up, as well as some rough patches toward the middle. As far as performances go, Pitt and Blanchett are very good, but there are some definite dry moments.

The special effects and make-up in this film are truly amazing. Brad Pitt’s descent into youth is never once unbelievable; it looks tremendously authentic. The same goes for Blanchett’s aging process. The announcer said the film’s effects weren’t quite finished yet, which is even more impressive.

With all that said, the film is still in the very early stages of it’s life considering it won’t be released until Christmas. Fincher and his team have a lot of time to polish it up. I’m sure these test screenings will reveal the film’s obvious missteps, because I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who felt this way. Beneath it’s sprawling three hours, a beautiful film exists. I have faith that Fincher will find it.

I thought Spider-Man 3 was the best of the series. It really got the spirit of what movies are all about and I loved how well Kirsten Dunst did. She was just a trooper that entire movie. My favorite part was when Spider-Man almost got killed by that huge crane. I really thought they were going to kill him off at that point.

I'm seeing this and Valkyrie on Tuesday night. For Christmas, my boss is giving me the big banner we have with both Benjamin and Daisy's faces. I am so happy about this.

Friend of mine's dad works on movies and got a copy for award consideration and I was over when they were watching it.

That's believable. Glad to hear you liked it, Tuesday night can't come soon enough for me.

Do you get to see it early or something? Because I was under the impression it did not come out until Christmas day.

Yeah I work at a movie theatre. We already have the film, we just can't watch it until the key is active, which will be at midnight on the 24th. Me and a few others from work are watching it and Valkyrie back to back.

Oh okay, yeah, I know how that works. I worked at a movie theater this summer too and we did the same thing.

I've seen the film too, and it's incredible.

Really everything about the movie is perfect. The plot is intricate, the acting is phenomenal, the production design is mind numbing.

It definitely deserves all of the Oscar buzz and Golden Globe nominations.

Epic is really the only word I can use to describe it (without being lame and LYKOMG, seriously).

Well this is certainly nice to hear. Can't say I'm surprised though.
