I need to do a report on a film (it can be a documentary, or any other type of movie) that has medical ethical issues in it for my Bioethics course.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I should watch?

I also have to do this with a book as well, so some book suggestions would be appreciated as well.

The Sea Inside?

"In Spain, the former sailor Ramón Sampedro (Javier Bardem) has been quadriplegic for twenty-eight years and is fighting in court for his right of practicing euthanasia through an association that defends the freedom of choice and leaded by his friend Géne (Clara Segura). Ramón is introduced to the lawyer that is defending his cause, Julia (Belén Rueda), who has a degenerative fatal disease; and meets Rosa (Lola Dueñas), a lonely worker that has been abused by men. Their relationship changes the behavior and viewpoint of life of Rosa and Julia."

The professor said we can't use Brave New Word because it's used too much, haha.

Awakenings might be a good choice for me, I love that movie.

That sounds very good. I'll check the library & local Blockbuster for it, perhaps. Thanks.

Javier Bardem is incredible in it, and it is a true story.

While I've seen Sicko and could fairly easily pull 3-5 pages out of it, The Sea Inside sounds much more like what we're learning in class at the time.

The Barbarian Invasions dabbles in heroine as an alternative to morphine. Pretty great film as well.

You could probably even do an interesting comparison between the situations in The Sea Inside and The Barbarian Invasions if you're allowed to.

Also, a more obvious one would likely be Million Dollar Baby.

An older film called Johnny Belinda deals with a deaf, mute woman being raped. She becomes pregnant and decides to have the baby. The town she lives in thinks that since she's "handicapped" then she must be mentally unstable and therefore unfit to have a child so they try to take it from her and she has to fight for her right to keep the child. Maybe not necessarily what you're looking for there, but a good film nonetheless.

Also, you might want to check out this film:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0456149/

It's a pretty rough indictment of the Romanian health care system.

Edit: Now that I think about it, you could probably even use Scorsese's The Aviator. Howard Hughes suffered from OCD and since at the time no one even knew what OCD was and it therefore was not classified as a disease (everyone just thought he was nuts), he slowly went crazy in the solitary of his home and eventually died.

My school library had The Sea Inside!

I also got Suspiria, Closer, Primer (seen it), Pink Flamingos (seen it), and City of God (seen it).
