Going to be able to see all these movies the next two days, and plan to try to see them all, but, in case I don't have time, looking for suggestions on which to prioritize:

The Tree of Life
Beginners
Submarine
Midnight in Paris
Vlast

I regret not watching Submarine in January when it was in my city for two days. I wasn't expecting for it to get such a positive response.

HELL yes:

We will soon be announcing revised Blu-ray and DVD editions of Jean Renoir's masterpiece The Rules of the Game (http://thecriterioncollection.createsend2. com/t/r/l/tyijkjy/vklyddtt/y/) as part of our November lineup—we are replacing one supplement and creating new packaging.
Our original DVD edition will then be officially out of print. However, at this time we are offering it at a 65% discount from the suggested retail price at Criterion.com. (http://thecriterioncollection.createsend2. com/t/r/l/tyijkjy/vklyddtt/j/) (Use the promotion code REGLE at checkout.) We have a limited supply. We will fulfill orders as soon as we can.

Charade is already expired
Videodrome is up now

I'm not a huge fan of Jodie Foster's acting, but if she can rise to the level of the other three (I think Reilly is extremely underrated), then I think the film will be exceptional.

Polanski excels in shots/moments where it's as if his camera is picking up on something the audience isn't supposed to see. Mundane character movement/conversation that really brings a realness to the proceedings. He does it even in his more over-the-top films and it lends an air of truth to them.

Because of this I can see him hitting it out of the park with this concept. If he can reign himself in a bit and let the tension grow organically throughout the film it's going to be awesome.

jbaseball44

1. Repulsion
2. Chinatown
3. Knife in the Water
4. Cul-de-sac
5. Rosemary's Baby

If The Pianist was in the oeuvre of just about any other living filmmaker, I'm sure it would be a top 5, if not top 3 film of that filmmaker. The fact that it's not among Polanski's top 5 for most of us here I think really speaks to how great his body of work is.

well the beginning of the year newsletter hinted at a handful of the 2011 releases, and Y tu mama tambien was on there, so I assume it will be announced next month. and Following, in my opinion, has no business being in the CC, so it can stay the fuck away.

Not Criterion related, but I had a question and thought this thread could use a bump...

It would be very appreciated if someone could tell me if this (http://www.amazon.com/Eureka-Go-Riju/dp/B0006B7KPG) version of Eureka is worth buying. I can't find any reviews of it, can't locate the manufacturer's website, and frankly the thing looks a bit like a bootleg. The Artificial Eye release is the most well-known but I've not read good reviews of it and anyway I'm currently without a region-free DVD player. This is one of my favorite films of all time and I just have to own it. Thanks in advance.

Decent sale (http://www.deepdiscount.com/kino-super-deal/) on Kino titles going at Deep Discount.com

E.g. some newer films on Blu-ray for $17.04 (Poetry, Le Quattro Volte); Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice on BD for $19.47; Kar-Wai's Happy Together and Fallen Angels on BD for $14.60.

Sort of a place to fetishize steelbooks and bemoan the fact that Tarr will never come to Blu-ray—that sorta stuff. But I'll only make the topic if you dorks post in it.

Ivan: "I hear you're making a movie called 'Twins.'"
David: "Yeah, it's about these twin gynecologists."
Ivan: "I want to make a movie called 'Twins' as well."
David: "Oh, really?"
Ivan: "Yeah, and I need the title more than you do. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, twins. That's the sell."
David: "I can see that."
Ivan: "So we can't both have movies called 'Twins.'"
David: "OK. How much?"

Reitman ended up paying Cronenberg for the use of the title, and Cronenberg changed the title of his 1988 film to "Dead Ringers," which was now financed by "Twins" money. "And they both did OK, on their own levels," Cronenberg chuckled.

Such a cool story.

I actually like Yes, although I can see how someone wouldn't (hopefully your reaction isn't just a knee-jerk response to contemporary characters speaking in iambic pentameter). I do think it's a bit strange that you say "Ick" without having seen Orlando. It preceded Yes by 12 years and is one of Swinton's best roles. Good review of it here (http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/review/orlando/4904).

And besides something like Malkovich which I totally can't get behind of, I think the the picks are comprised of a great mix of "classics" and then the more "uncoventional" releases like the Hollis Frampton and Spalding Gray

Ha, was just searching for the official thread to post this.

More generally, Bela Tarr period on BD.

Recently bought the Facets DVD for Almanac of Fall.

I don't really complain, but if fucking Valerie and Her Week of Wonders gets a stand-alone release I'll lose it.

Also they added Seance on a Wet Afternoon for free viewing on their hulu page. Must watch

Pretty sure it played in NC. Really surprised it didn't come to Atlanta.

I was shocked, too. It MIGHT have hit when in the heart of this semester, but I really doubt that I would have missed it. Uncle Boonmee was only here for a week last year, too, so I've missed out on some of the bigger films the last couple years.

Haven't seen it, and while I'm sure it's fine a part of me just feels like why put it out out when Godard's film is much more deserving, although I know that's naive and not how it works.

This news more than made up for my disappointment, though: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Querelle-Blu-ray/45103/
