Seeing as how we have so many cineastes on here these days, I figured I would go ahead and make a thread for the greatest film distribution collaboration around.
Also, I'll post the new releases and awesome sales going on in this thread when they are announced.

Close-up - Spine 519
Internationally revered Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami has created some of the most inventive and transcendent cinema of the past thirty years, and Close-up is his most radical, brilliant work. This fiction-documentary hybrid uses a sensational real-life event—the arrest of a young man on charges that he fraudulently impersonated well-known filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf—as the basis for a stunning, multilayered investigation into movies, identity, artistic creation, and existence, in which the real people from the case play themselves. With its universal themes and fascinating narrative knots, Close-up continues to resonate with viewers around the world.
Disc Features
SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE-DVD SET

* Audio commentary by Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa and Jonathan Rosenbaum, authors of Abbas Kiarostami

* “Close-up” Long Shot, a forty-five-minute documentary on Close-up’s central figure, Hossein Sabzian, five years after Kiarostami’s film

Everlasting Moments - Spine 520
Swedish master Jan Troell, director of the beloved classics The Emigrants and The New Land, returns triumphantly with Everlasting Moments, a vivid, heartrending story of a woman liberated through art at the beginning of the twentieth century. Though poor and abused by her alcoholic husband, Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen, in a beautifully nuanced portrayal) finds an outlet in photography, which opens up her world for the first time. With a burnished bronze tint that evokes faded photographs, and a broad empathetic palette, Everlasting Moments—based on a true story—is a miraculous tribute to the power of image making.
Disc Features
DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE-DVD SET
* New high-definition digital transfer, approved by director Jan Troell
* Jan Troell’s Magic Mirror, an hour-long documentary about Troell’s life and career
* Short documentary on the making of Everlasting Moments, featuring interviews with Troell, cast,
and crew
* Documentary featuring photographs by the real Maria Larsson, accompanied by narration telling her story
* Theatrical trailer
* PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Armond White

Night Train to Munich - Spine 523
A twisting, turning, cloak-and-dagger delight, Night Train to Munich is a gripping, occasionally comic confection from writers Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat and director Carol Reed. Paced like an out-of-control locomotive, Night Train takes viewers on a World War II–era journey from Prague to England to the Swiss Alps, as Nazis pursue a Czech scientist and his daughter (Margaret Lockwood), who are being aided by a debonair British undercover agent, played by Rex Harrison. This captivating, long-overlooked adventure—which also features Paul Henreid—mixes comedy, romance, and thrills with enough skill and cleverness to give the master of suspense himself pause.
Disc Features
* New, restored high-definition digital transfer
* New video conversation between film scholars Peter Evans and Bruce Babington about director Carol Reed, screenwriters Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, and the social and political climate
in which Night Train to Munich was made
* PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Philip Kemp

Yeah. (http://www.criterion.com/asp/boxed_set.asp?id=10051) I've never seen the Love Conquers All version but I imagine and have heard from multiple people that it is stupid and not worth the additional $20.

I'm really excited for the Klein box too. I've already seen Polly Maggoo (it was average) but I'm really interested in the other two which look much more, ahem, delirious.
As for the kids movies, I'm not sure what I'm going to do about those. I don't really feel like I need the Criterion version and I sort of feel like buying the three cheapies and then giving them to my firstborn (whenever that happens) at the appropriate age.
Also, I forget whether you're a Bunuel fan or not but they accidentally put up formatting for a Five French Films of Luis Bunuel boxset the other day and then hastily took it down; so be on the lookout for that.

I hated Pierrot le Fout.
Weird I guess since Vivre sa Vie is one of my favorite films. Pierrot le fout was just abysmal though.
Blast of Silence is in my top 25 so I can't wait for that.

I just saw the formatting up with a blank image and that "Also available in the Five French Films of Luis Bunuel," however the link just went to an error for a nonexistent link It was up for about six hours and then taken down. The formatting appeared next to the ones they've already released (Diary of a Chambermaid, The Milky Way, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, The Phantom of Liberty, That Obscure Object of Desire) so I assume it will just be a Criterion re-release with single packaging, although I hope there are even more special features and new artwork. Personally I'm not a huge fan of two or three of those films but for a reasonable price I would consider picking it up. I'll post something in here if it materializes.
My personal conspiracy theory is that this will pave the way for The Four Mexican Films of Luis Bunuel plus Tristana. Janus owns the distribution rights for Tristana, Simon of the Desert, and The Exterminating Angel at a minimum and there are rumours that they also have the rights to El and The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz. It's only a matter of time before the first three show up and it would be appropriate to bring out two big Bunuel boxes within the same timeframe.

I picked up Burden of Dreams and 3 Films by Louis Malle (Finally had enough extra money to get it) I love Au Revoir Les Enfants and Murmur of the Heart. I haven't seen Lacombe Lucien yet but from what I've read about it, it sounds great.

Yeah, someone bumped into Peter Becker (one of the bigwigs at Criterion) at a NYC screening of The Last Emperor and badgered him about some things and he said they're working on the special features and whatnot to get it ready for a release sometime around August/September. It wouldn't surprise me if it that time frame was off by a month or two but the bottom line is that it should be back within the end of the year.

I am actually kind of looking forward to it because of its reputation and this review:
Critics often describe movies as visceral. If they haven't seen Salò, I respectfully submit that they don't know what the fuck they're talking about. This film literally made me vomit. (And yes, I'm using "literally" correctly there). I don't think that makes it a good film, but "visceral," in the sense of "affecting the internal organs?" Yeah, Pasolini's got that.
I have a high tolerance for gross things, so we'll see what happens.

It's slow and nothing really happens, but it is a very good movie. Although I imagine that a lot of it could be lost if one doesn't have a particularly good understanding of Spanish history or Spanish culture. It is definitely worth seeing just for Ana Torrent's performance though.

To tell you the truth, I always have a hard time judging performances in foreign films. Not being able to understand the language really hinders my ability to tell whether the performance is genuine or not. Thats just me, though.

They probably realized that they might have to push the Klein set back so they didn't want to end up pushing it back and releasing two Eclipse sets in the same month. Oh well, hopefully once this whole thing gets straightened out they'll go straight through until the end of the year. It's been an easy year so far for me, I only plan on buying one release in the entire first six months (Death of a Cyclist), although that may change when I see a few more of the new releases (Pierrot le fou, This Sporting Life, Antonio Gaudi, Klein Eclipse set).

Just saw Baumbach's Kicking and Screaming and Jarmusch's Night on Earth. Kicking and Screaming is a great little film, certainly miles better than Margot at the Wedding. Tons of great quotes. Night on Earth is hit or miss, not nearly as good as Coffee and Cigarettes (which I think works better because the vignettes are shorter).

What else have you seen from Jarmusch? I've only seen Down By Law and Stranger Than Paradise and am curious how his more recent stuff stacks up against his early work.
I've seen Stranger than Paradise, Coffee and Cigarettes, Night on Earth and Broken Flowers. Broken Flowers certainly has more plot than his earlier films. Coffee and Cigarettes & Night on Earth are very similar (a collection of vignettes); the first all take place over...coffee and cigarettes, and the other takes place in five different cabs in five different cities (L.A., New York, Paris, Rome, Helsinki) over one night. C&C is better.

Oh man, you just saw Kicking and Screaming?
Endless quotes. Great film.
"There's food in the beer."
"Is that a pajama top?"
"Cool! A dictionary! I'm gonna look up "blowjob.""
Grover (http://imdb.com/name/nm0357979/): Oh, I've been to Prague. Well, I haven't "been to Prague" been to Prague, but I know that thing, that, "Stop shaving your armpits, read the Unbearable Lightness of Being, date a sculptor, now I know how bad American coffee is thing...”
Jane (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001882/): Beer, they have good beer there.

Salo was nowhere near as hard to watch as I thought it would be. Many of the acts are literally and figuratively distanced such that, while still being morally objectionable such as Marquis de Sade intended, are more tolerable and less visceral than the thought of them would generally illicit. For example, imagine if the guys in the classic lemonparty picture had clothes on and the picture was taken from 50-100 feet away. While still disgusting, it wouldn't be anywhere near as shocking as the present picture. Such is Salo, and it benefits from this by limiting the violence etc. to being more morally offensive than visually and viscerally offensive. As a result, the viewer is more directed towards the message instead of having a fixation on how disturbing the images are.
Definitely worth the viewing, although the old Criterion edition is ugly and not particularly worthy of their name, so its a good thing that they are rereleasing it.

Not that bad, there are only two or maybe three close-ups of people actually putting it into their mouths, the rest is at a distance. There's way more talking about shit than actually seeing it.

Yeah, I go to junior college (transferring the hell out of there in a couple of months, thank God) and it offers one single film class. So obviously I took it my first semester. The problem with that class is that the majority of people take it because it's an English credit and they think it'll be really easy; then they have to watch Breathless, Masculin Feminin, Intolerance, Sunrise, Modern Times, Un Chien Andalou, etc., which caused a lot of dropping. Suffice to say that despite that, every single person was riveted to the screen during this scene (it didn't hurt that we were in an auditorium so it was basically like a theater).

Nice. We have a decent selection for having no film department and crappy fine arts programs, but nothing really appeals to me other than the first two (which I took):
History and Film - 1920s and 30s film and how it was used in America, the Soviet Union, and Germany
Film and Society in Spain - the depiction of Spanish culture/history/society through film
They also have the same thing going for China and Latin America.
History of Film Origins to 1965
History of Film 1965 to Present
That's it.

Financial Economics, naturally. I don't know that I'll ever both to receive education regarding film from a higher ed institution. I plan to get a normal job and hopefully start a family while writing and doing shorts on the side. If there comes a point where I can maintain that and make it my career in some way, I will, but otherwise I am content to crunch numbers all day and watch all night for the rest of my life.

I graduate in May and have the same sort of problem. I decided to put my Netflix account on hold in January so that I could watch every movie I want to see that my school's library has that Netflix does not. It's hard to say because I have not seen all of the special features for all of these films. Me = not happy right now:
Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,
We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.
Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.
Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.
Looks like I'll need a Blu-Ray player now.

God, I REALLY don't want to switch to Blu-ray yet. DVDs look fine.
aminorthreat55
05/07/08, 09:29 PM
I don't want to switch either, mostly because my current technology set-up is trash and its gonna cost me thousands to update it. My laptop is 4 years old and about to eat it (and the dvd player is broken), I've got a 20 inch tv (fine but kinda small) with a built-in dvd player that is so overworked even newly-opened dvds skip, and an exterior dvd player which is 8 years old and has terrible image quality. Oh well, things could be worse.

Yeah I'm not so bummed about it anymore. Priority-wise for me, it's pretty low right now, and I don't have the money to justify supporting any Blu-ray technology right now either. So in the process of replacing more important things like my laptop, I should hopefully get a better feel for the market and prices should decline somewhat in the intermediary time period.
For me, my biggest concern is dropping $30+ for something like Bicycle Thieves, only to have the entire thing released on Blu-ray next year.

Yeah I guess they're behind on the Blu-ray schedule or something and don't want to half-ass it. I'm mostly disappointed that neither Shadows nor Opening Night were re-released, as those are easily my favorites of the Cassavetes box. I'm definitely excited for Missing though.
Wings as in the original Best Picture winner?
EDIT: Nope. That was stupid.
I'm very excited for Salo, though. Hurrah!
I watched Salo, last year, one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen.

That is not even remotely true. It's just a tear-jerker, plain and simple. It's indicative of an important cinematic movement, but that doesn't make it genius. Amarcord, while not the defining Fellini film, is at once complex and the emotional equivalent of a 13 year old. That comprises only a small fraction of its genius. Few movies can leave such lasting effects after every viewing.

In terms of a guide, I would start the new Janus Essential Art House films. (http://www.criterion.com/asp/EAH.asp) Not that you need to buy them, but rather those six represent a good variety of what extends throughout the collection. For example if you Netflix Wild Strawberries and enjoy that, you could venture into more Bergman. Alternatively if you love Knife in the Water you could venture into Polish and Czech new wave, etc etc. They should be announcing another set in the near future, so that would give you a dozen accurately described Essential Art House films to get your feet wet. Plus using Netflix you can watch all the special features without having to wait around for the good online sales.

The Third Man, Rififi, The Wages of Fear, Le Samourai, and Shoot the Piano Player are all good thriller/crime films to start with. Divorce Italian Style, Mafioso, Big Deal on Madonna Street, and La Strada are all great Italian comedies. I think those two genres are the most accessible from the collection although the individual films in the crime/thriller group vary widely in style even though they're all great.

Nice. I just picked up Charade from the Amazon sale. Also wanted the Cassavetes box and Unfaithfully Yours but I don't have the money to throw around right now, which kinda sucks because those were steals.

The Soderbergh/Gilroy commentary is great.
Yes. So are most of the special features in that set actually.

The Cassavetes box is just so sexy, and considering the amount of stuff that is in it you are right it is absolutely a steal.

Just got my copy of Traffic and Chasing Amy in the mail from Amazon. Forgot how awesome of a movie Traffic is, and the special features are pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to watching the one about the color tinting of the film.
Have a couple older foreign flicks coming from Netflix soon.

I really do not have the money either, I had to convince myself to buy those (because as you said they are steals), I kept on adding and removing the Cassavetes box from my cart and then eventually decided against it, I'll probably end up regretting it but what can you do? Besides DD's %20 sale shouldn't be too far away

Seems like an odd choice for Criterion. I wonder how much it will cost.

Do you guys think that any more "new movies" (past 10 years or so) will eventually be worthy of a Criterion release?

Same. The packaging always seemed like a big draw of the Criterion movies to me.

Punch Drunk Love seems like a good candidate. It will take a while for the rights to be for sale, but I could easily see them picking that up five or ten years down the road. It's easy to say what fits in with the catalog, but I can't see a lot of modern movies having their DVD rights sold to Criterion for some reason. I'm sure I'll be wrong though.

Good call on PDL.
As for newer films, Memories of a Murder is easily one of the best foreign crime-dramas I've seen in a long time. I don't know a lot about the process of how Criterion aquires a title, but I could see it fitting in to the collection.

Janus and Criterion go first-run:
Janus and Criterion Team Up for Revanche
Goetz Spielmanns Revanche, a 2008 festival favorite and Austrias submission for the best foreign film Oscar, has found a North American home with sister companies Janus Films and the Criterion Collection. In a rare step into the first-run business, Janus will launch the thriller theatrically early next year, followed by a Criterion DVD release. This was a staff pick, explains Criterion president Peter Becker, Were not in the habit of acquiring new films before theyre released, but Goetz Spielmann is such a commanding filmmaker that we wanted to be able to present his work in the Criterion Collection. The theatrical arm of Janus Films has made that possible, and were very proud to have the opportunity.
Los Angelesarea audiences have a chance to see Revanche this weekend, at the AFI Film Festival, with the director in attendance. The film will be screening at the Arclight Hollywood, Saturday, November 1, at noon, and Sunday, November 2, at 10:15 pm. To learn more or order tickets, click here.

The Trial kicks ass. My sister said its not entirely true to the original Kafka novel, but its still quite a stellar film. Plus, who doesn't love Anthony Perkins?

The Simon del desierto cover art is so underwhelming relative to that of Angel, which is especially disappointing given all of the great imagery in the film.
